Come training camp there will be surprise cuts

#Chiefs have Alex Smith, Jamaal Charles, Jeremy Maclin, Justin Houston, Allen Bailey, Dee Ford & Marcus Peters signed THROUGH 2017.

Honestly....who knows. We won't know shit until the full details are released. My guess would be that they're at least going after one more player. Like you said....no point in carrying that cap space if you're just going to sit on it.

Hmmm. On the surface, I don't like that. I'd prefer to eat more cap this season while we appear to be pretty loaded and ready to make a run.

If his cap hit is minimal this year, it's just going to jack it up in future years and I'd prefer not to see multiple $20+ million cap hits like the Suh deal.

Whatever. Dorsey has earned the benefit of the doubt for the most part. If true, though, we're certainly going to make a run for someone/several someones. If we structured it like that to just sit on the cap space I'll break some shit.

Dorsey tried to work with Hudson during the season last year on a new deal, so they did everything they could to make that happen. You need to understand it takes two to tango and with a lot of players in the league today they are getting more money in the open market.

It makes no sense to take less money when you can get into the market with multiple offers.

Supposedly, they'll need about $2.5 million for injured players (whatever that's supposed to mean). So if they have $5.5 million left, they could sign Mathis (even though I'm opposed to it) or trade for Kendricks (which would be awesome) or just roll it over into next year's cap.

Ford was drafted because he was the best available athlete when they Chiefs selected. Pass rushers are at a premium and there was absolutely no guarantee that a guy with his pedigree would be there for the Chiefs in 2015.

Personally, I'm glad they're easing Ford into his role. He has some great mentors and I'm sure he'll be fine. He may not be the franchise sack leader when his career is finished but Houston & Ford on the edge should give offensive coordinators plenty of concern for the next several years.

He might be able to find a starting gig but it wouldn't be on a team that's as loaded or talented as the Chiefs. He's earned in excess of $60 million (not including this year's $6 million) and as much love as he constantly professes for KC, it's hard to see him elsewhere if it's just for a paycheck.

I could see him back at $3 million in 2016 as a back up and situational pass rusher only.

That's what makes Houston so important. Ford's weakness is that he's slight enough that he's probably destined to be a weakside rusher. But when you have a 15-20 sack rusher on the strong side...who gives a shit? Ford now gets to use his greatest strength - absolutely obscene quickness and raw speed - to terrorize LTs. If you don't have an absolutely perfect kick-step, tough shit because offenses can't give you help or Houston will kill them. Give Ford even a passable inside swim move to keep LTs honest and the guy is probably a 12-15 sack player in his own right.

I keep getting back to 'what does Dante Fowler do that Dee Ford doesn't'? I just don't see a difference there and that's why I think we really got a great pick in Ford, even if I'd have preferred Bridgewater.

These two guys are going to terrorize offenses for a very long time.

No doubt about it. Ford might be better suited to the weak side than even Houston could be given his speed anyway. If he can consistently get to QBs before the top of their drop, we could be the beneficiaries of a hefty amount of fumble recoveries.

It was more just a "What if" scenario suggestion. How many sacks could a guy rack up on the blind side when he just posted 22 from the strong side?

Justin Houston gets six-year, $101 million extension from Chiefs

Justin Houston is going to be a Kansas City Chief for years to come.

A source told The Star on Wednesday that Houston has agreed to a six-year, $101 million extension with the Chiefs that will not only make him the highest-paid Chief ever, but also one of the highest-paid defensive players in football.

“Today we were able to reach an agreement with Justin and his agent, Joel Segal, to keep him here in Kansas City for the foreseeable future,” Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said. “He’s one of the top players in the National Football League and a premier pass rusher. As we’ve said from the beginning, Justin the football player, and the person, is someone we wanted to be a part of our organization. We are very happy that he will remain a member of the Chiefs.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news first.

The deal, which includes $52.5 million guaranteed, makes him the second-highest paid NFL defensive player behind Miami’s Ndamukong Suh (six years, $114 million). It tops the one Texans star defensive end J.J. Watt, who needed an iconic season to beat Houston out for defensive player of the year in 2014, received last September, when he inked a six-year, $100 million extension with $51.8 million guaranteed.

“John, Joel and their staffs did a great job of getting this deal done,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. “Justin has a relentless work ethic on the field and in the classroom, and he provides our team with tremendous leadership. He is a fearless competitor, and we are glad he is going to be back.”

Wednesday marked the NFL’s deadline for franchise players to sign long-term extensions with their clubs.

Had the 26-year-old Houston, who received a $13.1 million franchise tender from the Chiefs this offseason, not agreed to a long-term deal, he would have had to play out the 2015 season on the tender or on a one-year deal he negotiated with the team to earn an accrued year toward free agency.

Houston, however, would have been no obligation to sign the franchise tender immediately. In the absence of a long-term deal, Houston could have held off on signing the tender, skipped training camp and the preseason and returned shortly before the regular season and still commanded his full franchise salary.

However, after much wrangling between the Chiefs and Houston’s agent, Joel Segal, over the past year — the two sides have been negotiating — they managed to avoid that scenario with a record-setting deal that will keep Houston under contract through 2020.

Houston has skipped organized team activities for the past two offseasons, but over the past several months, the Chiefs’ top decision makers — chairman Clark Hunt, coach Andy Reid and general manager John Dorsey — have consistently remained positive about a deal getting done.

Now Houston, who had a cap number of $1.4 million when he racked up a league- and career-high 22 sacks last season, is finally getting his money. And with a new contract now in hand, will be required to report to training camp on time.

Veterans report to camp in St. Joseph on July 31.

I'm envisioning an ILB stunt in the gap between the LT, who kicks out in an effort to stonewall Ford's speed rush, and the LG who crashes down on Poe to assist the C.

Kansas City Chiefs Sign Linebacker Justin Houston

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Wednesday that the club has signed linebacker Justin Houston to a long-term contract. Terms of the contract were not disclosed by the club.

Houston (6-3, 258) has recorded 248 tackles, 48.5 sacks, 19 passes defensed, one interception, seven forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and 71 quarterback pressures in four seasons with the Chiefs (2011-14). He led the NFL in sacks (22.0) in 2014 and set the franchise’s single-season sack record, passing late Pro Football Hall of Famer Derrick Thomas’ previous record of 20.0 recorded in 1990. He was 0.5 sack shy of the NFL record (22.5). Houston has recorded 13 multi-sack games, seven of those were recorded this past season. He became just the fourth player in franchise history to record at least three seasons with double-digit sack totals (10.0 – 2012, 11.0 – 2013, 22.0 – 2014), joining LB Derrick Thomas (seven seasons), DE Neil Smith (four seasons) and LB Tamba Hali (three seasons).

The Statesboro, Georgia, native and former Georgia Bulldog has been selected to three consecutive Pro Bowls (2012-14). Houston originally entered the NFL as a third-round selection of the Chiefs (70th overall) in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Now we just need Denver to give a huge deal to Thomas and perhaps lose a few draft picks for cheating...

And maybe die in a horrible, awful grease fire

Being excited about a team winning back-to-back seasons starting off the regime with the salary cap and youth at it's best in years. That is absolutely reason for optimism.

If posters are here constantly hating everything bc of what happened in the past than they truly are pathetic and should invest their time doing something else.
