Oh for sure, if I still was around there, that's what I would do. We actually couldn't afford to live in Pella at the time so we lived in Knoxville. We made a lot of money letting people camp in our sizable yard during Sprint Car Nationals.

If I can be of any further service, let me know. If you're moving here, I want to make sure you enjoy it to the best of your abilities.

It's really not a bad place to live, I just have "winter" problems that are never going to be fixed until I move south. It's not Iowa so much as it's just too far north. FWIW, I wouldn't move to KC because it's still too cold there.

Talisman 02-21-2022 01:24 PM

The good news is that since Mahomes has been lighting it up with the Chiefs, they are always on TV in Des Moines. I used to have to hit up a sports bar or restaurant to watch some of the games, but I think every one was on this year. It helps when they get so many prime time games, though.

Yep. We're basically a Chiefs local market now.

It seemed “whiter” than Wichita, but it’s probably not fair to make that distinction after one day and to be totally honest that isn’t something we’ve ever talked about before. I think it came up because she would be moving away from all of her friends and family.

Go to the West Des Moines walmart next time you're in town. It's probably the "cool kids walmart". Then get back to me about the population. I think that will address some concerns because that is the Johnson CO of Des Moines.

If you're looking for "less white" areas and communities, message me and I'll give you some suggestions.

htismaqe 02-21-2022 04:20 PM

Honestly, I wouldn't be opposed to living in Pella, if I were you. As a director level employee, you'll be able to afford it and it's a nice community. With 2 major employers and a college, it's not your typical Iowa small town.

I'd much rather drive to the amenities than drive an hour to work every day. I'd also much rather live in Pella than on the east side of Des Moines, which is really your only option unless you want to drive through (or around) the city every day.

I drove from downtown Des Moines to Pella for a year and it was awful.

Grim 02-21-2022 05:22 PM

Pella is a beautiful little town but the real state market is ridiculous.

My mom passed away in Pella's Hospice house a few years ago.
The thing that amazed me the most was when we went to Walmart.... 2 PM on a Tuesday, very few customers, 8 checkout lines open with a cashier at each register.

East side of Des Moines proper? No, I wouldn’t live there. But Altoona, Carlisle, Bondurant, etc are perfectly fine and have some nice new neighborhoods.

Altoona isn't great either, use to live there. Outside of the tracks and tracks of duplexes, it's kind of trashy in town.

Carlisle isn't really a straight shot to Pella so logistically it's problematic.

Prairie City is right on 163 and about halfway in between. It's not a bad place to live but it's pretty rural, small town.

I feel like you’ve missed the growth in these towns. And Carlisle is just off the bypass which connects you to 163.

Jewish Rabbi 02-21-2022 08:37 PM

And I haven’t been in a single neighborhood in Altoona that I would call trashy

Prairie City is growing and is an easy drive to Altoona which has anything you need. Not many bad options listed here. If you like golf, Copper Creek is a really nice neighborhood in Pleasant Hill.

I used to live there. The edge Altoona is nice if you don't mind rows and rows of cookie cutter houses and townhomes. But I used to live in town proper. It's still pretty much a small Iowa meth town.

There's a bus driver whose family has driven school busses back in Okoboji since my dude was little. He's been arrested and accused of inappropriately touching a 15 year old girl.

Watching the community eat itself over whether they believe him or her is gut wrenching.

I'll stick to CO.

That's not unique to Iowa. Most small towns are like that, especially in the midwest.

There's nothing to do but gossip and fight.

Yep. People that don't live here don't understand how many hispanic communities there are here. I live 25 minutes from Marshalltown and it's not uncommon to hear nothing but Spanish when you're there.

Iowa, a Midwestern U.S. state, sits between the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. It’s known for its landscape of rolling plains and cornfields. Landmarks in the capital, Des Moines, include the gold-domed, 19th-century State Capitol Building, Pappajohn Sculpture Park and the Des Moines Art Center, noted for its contemporary collections. The city of Cedar Rapids' Museum of Art has paintings by native Iowan Grant Wood.

I'm not sure about it violating state law, otherwise obviously they wouldn't have been able to do it.

But one in particular that I know of out by the mall is a red light camera. You are allowed to do a right turn on red, but it will snap a picture if you don't come to a complete stop during the red. Haven't been out there for quite some time, but assuming it's still there and operational.
