Yeah I just discovered this myself. I told the wife after the Sat drawing that there wasn't a winner. She said she needed to get a ticket for Monday's drawing. I said you have till weds then I looked it up. It's been some time since I bought a Powerball I have gotten Megamillions as it was the one getting huge payouts.

So, say there are 5000 locations to buy a Powerball ticket in Missouri and you buy your tickets in one of these locations (there are probably far more than 5k).

And let's say 20 locations per year sell a grand prize ticket (it's actually something like 15 locations over 20 years).

If there were no repeated locations, it would take 250 years for every store to sell a winning ticket.

And then you would just have to be the one in however many hundreds of tickets sold that day, within your 250 years of purchasing tickets.... and to reduce those odds, maybe go around another 10 times.

So, purchasing tickets for 2500 years should do it.

And with inflation, $1 billion would mean a winning prize of $12,389,727,737,754,483,346,649,365,463,695,360,000,000,000 if it takes all 2500 years.

I don't understand this way of looking at it. It's not an investment. It's blowing your money for entertainment (in this case, a glimmer of hope and "what if"). You dont need to constantly shit on everyone with this. The odds are right there on the front of the ticket for everyone to read.

It was pretty TiC, I really don't care what people do with their money (granted, from what htis said, it does seem like a bad thing for more than just those who waste their money).

I feel the same for fancy cars when people say don't invest in depreciating assets and so forth... it has nothing to do with "investing" and everything to do with spending disposable money on something fun.

Probably not. It doesn't mean you have to sit quietly and let shit happen. Again, I've seen too many people ruined by gambling. At any given time, my local casino is jammed full. Even on days like Christmas Day. A good 75% of them have little to no disposable income - they're spending money they need for food and gas on slot machines. It's as devastating to a person and their family as a raging cocaine addiction. That's why I put my stuff out there whenever I can, to whoever will listen.

And for the record, I'm not opposed to legalizing gambling. I just don't think it should be a public/private partnership. It should be 100% private. There's too many problems with government-sponsored gambling. For example, the original casino here was sold as a horse racing track. They soon after added slots and stuff. They were SUPPOSED to pump money into the local school districts.

Of course, those school districts haven't gotten anything materially valuable but the casinos and government have certainly gotten their fair share.

I do tell Slayer he's a dumbass every time he mentions buying Powerball tickets or going to a casino.
