Coverage by the linebackers was the defense’s biggest weakness. This is them addressing it.

Gay has been injury prone somewhat so it's a good depth move.

you know, this sort of reminds me of last year when we signed that panthers linebacker who had a lot of tackles, started every game and didn't make the team. Hopefully this one is better than that.

HemiEd 03-17-2023 06:38 PM

I was sad they didn't tender Darius Harris, but not anymore.

This is another upgrade, just like at LT.

In Veach we trust.

Wisconsin_Chief 03-17-2023 06:41 PM

How did this guy not get more money and interest? Really doesn’t make any sense. Teams seem to be very hesitant to pay anyone. Feels like collusion but I’m fine with it. Just saying.

I mean his stats look way better than Gay. You’d think he was promised a pretty prominent role. Should be very interesting. They seem to innovating a lot on both sides of the ball. Right now we look unquestionably better on D. This is going to be fun.

I don't understand where his market went... Unless his coverage was really that bad. with 144tks he was on the field alot.

TE's were a problem for Chargers to handle.

It's not just that he was on the field a lot, he knew where to find it most of the time. Guy has a nose for the ball.

Weird we got him so easy.

Hmm.

NJChiefsFan 03-17-2023 07:31 PM

Not the first to say it but always found myself noticing him when we played the Chargers. Perhaps due to their run defense. Do remember hearing stuff about his coverage issues but never noticed it myself. Every LB ends up being on a Kelce poster so I usually don't judge them too harshly.

I think its great value. Trusting they wouldn't do this move if they felt they needed the cap space elsewhere. That's the only possible concern I would even have.

Tranquill at $3M is a bargain. We need 3 LB in our base formation: Bolton, Gay and Tranquill (putting opposing offences to sleep) makes this unit a strength. Chenel is now depth. This is a football player that wants to go for a ring on a one-year deal. He likely gave up millions of dollars to play with KC, so his motivation will be off the charts. He can drop into coverage or rush the passer and gives Spags many options.

Megatron96 03-17-2023 10:57 PM

This guy is going to be great in this defense.

Christian & Barry 03-17-2023 11:04 PM

I think this signing means that Gay is getting traded to either move up in the draft or get Hopkins. Love Willie, but I believe next year is his last year on rookie deal and Veach wanted to capitalize. I hope the Edwards signing doesn’t mean the same thing in regards to Sneed.

The Chiefs play a 4-3 base. There are plenty of snaps to go around for Chenel, Gay, Tranquill and Bolton. Given that we will be weaker at S in 2023, LB seems to be a beneficial place for a compensating upgrade.

So apparently he's not great against the run, that's the knock. Given he can cover and that's the missing piece in the LB room that sounds fine. Keep him as a coverage LB and in for obvious passing downs.

How did I completely ****ing miss this yesterday... Odd.

Why would Kent say it and then call it a joke? Leo was a good pass rusher as a Senior at Wisconsin.

About the only thing Chenal is missing as a potentially dominant edge in the NFL is arm length. Carl Lawson and Melvin Ingram have done okay with the same-length arms. He has the size to hold up and he definitely has the strength and athleticism. I think moving him down on occasion would be worth trying out.

Some people on here got pissy when it came up after the draft but his college highlights and scouting profile were very similar to Micah Parsons. I can only think this is something they might explore

I don’t really see why they wouldn’t at this point. You have too many talented bodies at LB now to let guys sit. Chenal has the build to be a 3rd down edge rusher.

Will be very interesting to see how they approach this.

I was calling for him to get more looks from the edge last year, he was second to Parsons that draft year as an edge rushing LB. The closer he is to the line the better he plays imo, would not be surprised if he's rotated in more.

Thr knock that came up is he lacks bend, in addition to arm length.

By the way, here's an awesome article on the art of pass rush that highlights Derrick Thomas as the originator of the "ghost move" that Von Miller is known for, and video of how Schwartz would counter it on Miller. Thomas had crazy bend.

Quote:

“Derrick Thomas is the greatest speed rusher of all-time. He laid the foundation for the ghost technique becoming what it is today and once told me to ‘fall off the corner’ when rushing around the edge,” Smith told me. Smith said that Thomas and fellow Hall of Famer Charles Haley would “drop their inside shoulders and be near waist-level of offensive linemen around the corner.”

Yep but I also wouldn't have expected Tranquill to want to come here. If he had other suitors...then it couldn't have been just "come to KC and win a ring". He had to have been comfortable with whatever "roll" Spags told him.

And honestly, it could be that they have no plans of bringing Gay back after this season and they think that Tranquill could be cheaper after his 1 year deal.

There is absolutely an alternate reality out there where Jimmy G is a newly signed Chief right now.

He checks all the boxes for what we used to covet in a QB.

Chief Fan would’ve convinced himself that we just need an elite OL, a HOF TE, and to fix the defense. Then we can win the big one.
