Dickinson made 42% of his 3’s last year. Only shot a couple per game, but at least that helps provide some spacing when he’s playing next to KJ.

Then grab Mgbako. 4 deep on our bigs with Dickinson, KJ, Mgbako, and Udeh. That’s probably the best quartet of bigs we’ve had since T Rob, the Morris twins, and Aldrich.

That starting lineup and bench has some really varied skill sets and upside plus a good amount of experience and established players. If the team gels, that’s the best in the nation. No doubt.

Having 3 big time shot makers like Dickinson, Timberlake, and Mgbako would make life ridiculously easy for Harris and KJ. That two man game that Self ran with those two at times would kill it with all that space to operate.

Man, I really feel like Zuby is that kid who, if he stayed at KU all 4 years, would be a lottery pick. KU fans have not even had a chance to see how athletic and dynamic he can be.

But, sometimes big recruits like Grimes just cannot accept that they still have something to learn about playing basketball, and they just want to go somewhere where they are the big recruit and get immediate playing time, and freedom to do whatever they want on the court.

Being the exact opposite of that is what made Remy so special. Yes, he always wanted to be a Jayhawk, but he went from a team that let him do whatever he wanted on the court, to a team where he knew the coach would be ripping him a new one constantly, and he didn't care. He wanted to be a Jayhawk, he put in the work, adapted his game, and got a NC for his efforts.

I hope Zuby stays, because he isn't going to be coached better anywhere else.

Their question mark is still going to be who scores. I'm surprised everyone is so hyped about Timberlake considering we just watched a midmajor guy leave the program who never could quite get it going at this level consistently. Here's Timberlake's stats against the three power 5 schools he played the last two years(Ohio state, Clemson, Wake Forest): 15-43(34%) from 2, 5-19(26%) from 3. Obviously playing on a better team can help him and it's just three games, but it's not like this guy was just dominating everyone he played against and is a lock for 15-20 PPG. Then you look at Mgbako and Jackson and the other freshman and while there is unlimited upside there, there's also downside. Again, we just witnessed a sure fire all American who was sure to contribute to this team contribute absolutely nothing all year and he certainly isn't the first freshman to ever struggle. That could go any number of directions. The Texas guy averaged 5 ppg and again offers potential but it hasn't been proven.

I'd say this team has the highest variance on any self team. There's a world they are a dominant #1 team and a world where they kind of slide to a good but not elite #1 team and end up a 2 seed.

With Hunter Dickinson on the floor taking up space and defensive attention as the primary offensive option, Timberlake is going to be wide open a lot. I'd expect his usage to decline and his efficiency to go up accordingly, so I don't know how meaningful his stats from any game last year will be when he's going to be in a much different role here.

Your idea of high variance is a team that has a floor as a 2 seed?

Scoring is not likely to be a problem. They'll have solid scoring ability at every position and also a few scorers on the bench. Obviously Harris is a pass-first PG, but his scoring ability has also gradually increased. Shot over 40% from three last year and scored in double figures in almost every game down the stretch.

Self knows how to scheme to get bigs like Dickinson baskets. Always has. I'd expect this to be our best offensive team since Udoka was here (and perhaps better as that 2020 team had little shooting).

Harris may well average close to 10 assists per game this year.

I don't think this is a good year to have a freshman-heavy team. Most recruiting experts seem to think this is a weaker class than usual. That's my impression from what I've seen too. Chris Johnson is a top 35ish recruit and he had a horrible year in HS and probably won't see a minute of action next year.

I don't think the guys at the top are as strong as what we usually see either.

Despite what some may have had you believe about Pettiford, he was effectively our only bench player that was even playable the entire season.

Chris Johnson has some major red flags, which is odd for a guy ranked so high. Which, like you mentioned, probably speaks to the quality of the class.

Yeah, hearing strong rumors that Mgbako is announcing KU on Friday. Staff already knows.

A lot of "insiders" are saying this has basically been a done deal since his KU visit.

This could be the most loaded KU team in quite awhile. Which is saying something considering they just won a national title a year ago and had the best team in the country in the Covid year.

That’s what I’ve been seeing too.

If so, this team should be Number 1 to start the year and the favorite to win it all.

The team pretty much has no weakness on paper.

Should be pretty good defensively. Tons of leadership and experience. A few big time shooters. Depth at the point. Exciting young talent.

Hell, we barely even talk about Elmarko, Udeh, and Marcus Adams Jr. That’s probably our ****ing bench. A few months ago, those were 3 likely starters.

Idk if Johnson is KU caliber anymore could be the next Cuffe but Adams Jr wants to be a one and done but if mgbako comes here he won't see as many minutes as he wants so it could happen.

Johnson is more of a risk to go than Adams imo.

Johnson is apparently a hot head with a fragile ego.

Adams reclassified to come in a year early, so he’s still on schedule if he plays 2 years at Kansas. Big skilled wings like him will find their way on the court. I could see him still playing a good number of minutes.

The problem is the transfer portal deadline is tomorrow, so he won't know about Mgbako until after the deadline passes. Hard to see anyone leaving with one day left to decide if they haven't already.

I think Marcus Adams is going to surprise a lot of people. He's being treated like an afterthought but he has serious skills.

Adams was never committed to UCLA. They were the perceived favorites to land him since he had visited 3 days before his announcement and being an LA kid but think we upped the NIL at the last minute.

He’s not the type of player who should expect to get minutes at KU as a freshman though.

He went from the No. 43-ranked prospect to the No. 71-ranked prospect nationally. He’s viewed as the No. 11-ranked combo guard in the class and No. 6-ranked senior in Texas.

We literally had 1 center and Mitch Lightfoot when we won it all.

If we land Mgbako, we’re still loaded. Bill can absolutely play small ball with guys like Marcus Adams and Mgbako at the 3/4 if KJ is in at center.

I guess I don't really understand why people think he's going to be amazing. He has no shooting or offensive ability other than dunking lobs. He will be a nice player for defense and rebounds, but if you need a guy who can rim protect and dunk lobs, there will always be plenty of guys who can do that every year in the portal. It hurts our depth possibly this year, but I find it hard to believe next year we can't recruit another guy out of the portal who will match Jr year Udeh unless he has an absolutely unprecedented rise on offense which we have no reason to believe will happen.
