For instance.....eating dinner at 6 pm on Monday night....and then not eating again until 10 am the next day?

I'm honestly thinking about doing a week of 24 hour fasts. Eat dinner at 7pm each night and then not eat again until 7pm the next night. I'm wondering if you're going to get the same thing as doing it 2-3 times a week.

How big of an ol' boy are ya' Pestilence?

The last time I weighed myself, I was 228. I'm looking to get down to around 190-200 lbs. Oh and I'm 6'.

Everything he says about starvation mode is completely correct. However... he's missing that you don't just go into starvation mode by fasting a few times a week. At least that's my initial reaction to what he says.

Yup. It takes a very long time with a sustained, large calorie deficit to "starve." Even 5 days without food is doable. Beyond that, probably, yes, you'll hit starvation mode. Hardly anything for anyone in here to worry about.

So what do you think about my thoughts in post #4486?

Nothing wrong with that, depending on your calorie intake at those meals. If it's too low (like less than 50% of your BMR), you'll probably hit starvation mode by the end of the week.

My BMR is sitting at around 2200 calories.

So basically I would either need to shorten it to around 16 hour fasts each day.....or eat a dinner meal thats roughly around 1100 calories?

Or, just eat dinner and then a snack, but yeah. On that first schedule, you would actually be taking in too few calories. That being said, you would see greater weight loss regardless. It just wouldn't be at the expected rate due to a slowing metabolism. Instead of 3 lbs of fat loss per week, you might only see 2.5, but it's still more than the 2 you'd see with a bigger calorie intake.

So what would you recommend then? Would you recommend going to a 16 hour fast every day? Or doing the 24 hour fast every day?

I haven't weighed since Sunday. I've been staying off the scales for the last month for the most part so I don't know for sure.

I eat lunch at 1pm, and then dinner around 7pm. So actually, it's 18 hours every day. I'll weigh in the morning after I workout and see what the scale says. My calories for the last 2 days have been 2200. I've eaten 665 today. Protein shake this morning, my standard 2 turkey sandwich lunch at 1pm.

I'll report tomorrow when I get to work on the weight.

How about 18 hours every day? Maybe I should eat 2000 calories 1 day a week? My BMR is 28xx a day plus I burn 800-1200 working out. What do you think?

16 is probably fine. That gives you an 8 hour eating window.

I actually burn pretty close to 4500 a day according to my bodybugg, which is supposedly over 90% accurate.

I think that if what you're doing now is working for you, there's no reason to change it.

Alright....so in an 8 hour eating window.....I should probably stick to around 1000-1200 calories then?

Silock 05-18-2010 04:26 PM

Sure, if you want. Calories in vs. calories out. Doesn't really matter what the frequency is.
