Why wouldn't you see MJ at AAA and then in '22 just rotate Salvy and MJ behind the plate and DH if he does well?

They need to trade 2 of Gallagher, Viloria, and Rivero to make room for Melendez at AAA. Probably will happen in the off-season when the long-term trade market is better.

Demoting one of those guys to make room for MJ would probably lower their trade value.

Not what i would do, but I suspect that’s a factor.

The turnaround has been amazing for him and Pratto. I was really down on them along with Matias in Wilmington. Doesn’t look like Matias will ever be able to avoid strikeouts enough to be playable in the majors, but the other two are night and day better from where they were at 2 years ago.

We have an endless supply of catchers in this org. We are hoarding them on purpose so that the powers that be cannot have them.

Yeah it sucks for Melendez but it's probably not much to worry about. Missing out on a month of AAA shouldn't derail him. Here's one area of player development where the Royals are actually doing really well. And that doesn't even factor that they were able to steal Luca Tresh in the draft. There are a lot of solid catchers in the system.

And Carter Jansen in the draft as well. Deep, deep position for the Royals.
