Kent St. at Oakland University
The Citadel at Old Dominion
Mount St. Mary's at James Madison
Austin Peay at Bradley

Portland at Pacific
Drake at Evansville

So they have an N.I.T. for teams that don't make the NIT?

That's the NIT for teams that didn't make the NIT's NIT.

By which I mean to say, the hierarchy is:

NCAA
NIT
CBI
CI.com

The CBI first round schedule:

3/17/09 Northeastern vs. Wyoming 9 p.m. HDNet
3/17/09 UTEP vs. Nevada 11 p.m. HDNet
3/18/09 St. John's vs. Richmond 7 p.m.
3/18/09 Vermont vs. Green Bay 8 p.m.
3/18/09 Charleston vs. Troy 8 p.m.
3/18/09 Buffalo vs. Wichita State 8 p.m. HDNet
3/18/09 Houston vs. Oregon State 10 p.m. HDNet
3/18/09 Boise State vs. Stanford

This actually looks like a half-decent field, Oregon State notwithstanding. At least there are some top 100 teams in this bitch.

Just as a strange tidbit, this week's Coaches' Poll is the FIRST TIME IN HISTORY that Louisville has been ranked #1. Weird, innit?

I heard they might find an alternate site in San Diego...can you verify that?

I guess this guy from the Los Angeles NBC affiliate turned off last year's game with 10 seconds left:

"Cal State Northridge players will say they are not just happy to be in the tournament — but maybe they should be. The Matadors won the Big West but that earned them a 15 seed, and they drew defending national champion Memphis. Ranked third in the nation Memphis. That game takes place Thursday in Kansas City, part of the West bracket."

Since MU hasn't been to the Dance in eons, I doubt they know it is not friendly to their style of play. When Roy was at KU, we played even faster than MU does. And Roy blamed Tourney time out rules for his lack of winning it all. The timeouts last forever in the Dance and it lets your opponent rest when they otherwise would be gasping for air. Roy said he had time to take a nap during commercials. Anyhow, it is much harder to wear an opponent out in the Dance than it is during the season. Just so you know. We don't want you to get any surprises.

There's a strong argument that the mountain west deserved 3 teams....over teams like:

Arizona
Michigan

I guess the argument is the RPI....and the "mediocre conference record" argument another poster made....

Do you reward a mediocre season (.500 or worse) in a major conference over a good season in a mid-major, or sub-major if you will, conference?

Tough call.

I just dont like the East Coast Sports Network's slurping of east coast teams....and Arizona (they have always had a man-crush for Lute Olson).

The only argument against Arizona is their big wins (KU, Gonzaga) came at home. You'd rarely ever get Kansas to go play at St. Mary's. Gonzaga had to go to St. Mary's since they're in the same conference... and they only won by 2 points... and Patty Mills was out.

Arizona played 2 non-conference games on the road, that's it. And they lost them both, including a 15 point loss at UNLV.

Big Arizona fan here.

1) No doubt that Arizona didn't earn the right to be in the Tourney.
2) No doubt the 25 year streak played a role in their selection
3) We lost 5 of the last 6 games... win any one of them an we earn the spot we were handed.
4) I don't care, WE'RE IN BABY!!!! PBJ PBJ PBJ

HatGuy wrote a column dissing Memphis. Mine eyes have seen the glory!

Quote:

First, the arguments for the Tigers: They lead the nation in defense, they set an NCAA record for wins over a four-year-period, they went to the championship game last year, they’re on a 25-game winning streak and they’ve won 61 Conference USA games in a row.

And now the killer arguments against them: They’ve never won an NCAA championship, and they belong to a mid-major conference
. . .
But not all won-loss records are created equal. And in Memphis’ case, there are not only the team’s humble conference origins to consider but its own history. To be looked at as a champion, you have to be a champion. And neither Calipari nor Memphis have ever been the ones cutting down the nets after the season’s final game.

Calipari and the Tigers are college basketball’s answer to golf’s Sergio Garcia. He’s the best coach and they’re the best team never to win a championship. Each year’s rankings are supposed to be determined on each year’s record. History isn’t supposed to factor into it. But human brains don’t work that way. If two teams have similar records, we will always rank the one with the grander history ahead of the one with no history.
