15 games left. 5 game lead on a playoff spot. We're gettin close, fellas.

Good times!

I have tickets to the last home game of the year against SF. Hope to see them clinch their playoff spot *officially* that day.

It's really a 6-game lead on Detroit, as we already have clinched the tie-breaker on them. So if they make up the 5 games on us for the third spot, we get it on the tie-breaker. They have to finish ahead of us by one game to get that spot.

Boston and Seattle are both 6 games back, Boston owns the tie-breaker on us. We split the season series with Seattle, next tie-breaker is intra-division records, and thanks in large part to our 12-1 vs. the White Sox that gives us the edge. So we have effectively a 7-game lead on the Mariners.

So, in essence, 5 game lead on a playoff spot. :p

If we can leave this weekend 2 games (or better) back from the Guardians, the Central gets really interesting.

3 games or more is probably too much to overcome without some luck.

We do own the tiebreaker over the Guardians too!

tk13 09-14-2024 09:41 AM

Been waiting for the Stratton arm injury. He just doesn't have it but we have him for one more year. The way relievers are so volatile, you might as well shut him down and try to fix him in the offseason. If he comes out next year pitching like that then you cut your losses.

Beginning of next week is going to be huge. We're playing Detroit but also Cleveland is playing Minnesota for 4 games at the same time. Should make an big impact on where everyone is in the division race and all the wild card spots going into the last 9 games.

Why Not? 09-14-2024 10:17 AM

Absolutely.

If we’re only 2 games back, this is far from over.

3 or 4 games back would probably be too much.

If (big if) we leave the weekend 1 game back, then I’d almost call us the favorite.

I was going to say, today's ump would give yesterday's ump a run for his money of being terrible.

WhawhaWhat 09-14-2024 12:49 PM

Today's ump is what made me remember to check. Umpire crew must have early dinner reservations tonight because this guy is calling anything a strike within 2-3 inches to the box.

PHOG 09-14-2024 12:54 PM

And then some that are clearly in the zone he calls a ball, similar to last night.

The headline is funny but it's not as bad as it sounds. They essentially have a $148 mil payroll this year but that includes a ton of dead money from bad contracts and players that are injured or no longer with the team. They are only on the hook for $38 million next year. They could theoretically add $75 mil through free agency and still be way under what they spent this year.

TomBarndtsTwin 09-16-2024 09:42 AM

Detroit series starts tonight. This is the BIG one, Detroit coming in hot. They've got Skubal scheduled for Tuesday, although we've hit him better than anyone this year.

Take 2 out of 3 and we're all but guaranteed a playoff spot at that point. 1 out of 3 and we're still fine. Just can't get swept. Any other result and we're good.

Better yet? How bout we sweep THEM!?!

Time for PAIN Motor City Kitties!!

Forecast looks horrible. Bad timing since it's the last home weekend. Giants don't have Monday off either so I don't know how they'd reschedule games. They may have to power through but if Sunday is a washout I don't know how that happens.

Just imagine if Bautista wasn't left on deck in the 9th due to the HP ump saving Wade Davis. How much would you have put down that he'd have hit home run #3 that game? The guy was scaring you guys shitless all series.

Bengals fans are a disgrace who can't accept the game being called fairly (see the obvious DPI in Sunday's game) whereas the Jays fans' gripes arising from that game are clearly legitimate. Clear distinction there, but I see how it can be easy to confuse the two.

He was fantastic, hence my point above. He might have gotten them out anyway. Sadly, we'll never know and I am forced to bring up the umpires any time somebody tries to bring up that WS in response to something completely irrelevant.

He probably still thinks about what would have happened had the count rightfully been 3-1 rather than 2-2. Definitely wakes up in cold sweats thinking about the call.

Maybe, we'll never know. I do know that hitting in a 3-1 count is statistically far easier than a 2-2 count and that didn't happen.

If you get to bring up that WS in response to any post about baseball I make that has nothing to do with it, I get to bitch about the umpires' wrongfully blowing a few calls in response. Seems fair enough to me.

Yea, I think they could have left off the “fit”. Cause it’s naturally the word that follows. Still, one of the better name changes.
