Russell, the Broncos’ director of player personnel, and Heckert, director of pro personnel, have added since the start of training camp middle linebacker Paris Lenon, safety Michael Huff, defensive end Jeremy Mincey, defensive tackle Sione Fua, linebacker Brandon Marshall and offensive tackle Winston Justice.

Heckert also can take satisfaction in knowing three players he drafted during his term as the Cleveland Browns’ general manager – Josh Gordon, Joe Haden and Jordan Cameron – made the Pro Bowl this year.

Although trading away defensive tackle Sealver Siliga to Seattle for guard John Moffitt in late-August was regrettable – Siliga is now starting for the New England Patriots; Moffitt retired – the Broncos are in the AFC championship despite losing Ryan Clady, Von Miller, Kevin Vickerson, Rahim Moore and Derek Wolfe to injuries.

So I couldn’t be more proud of that decision. It tells you a lot about the guy.”

Gase said that the decision was made in order to keep his focus on the task at hand in Denver.

“For me, I just felt like I was all in for what we were doing here,” Gase said. “I just didn’t want to stand in front of players and say one thing and do something else. So I felt like it was the most important thing for what we needed to do for this team.”

The first-year offensive coordinator has helped engineer an offense that put up all sorts of franchise and league records in 2013.

While it shouldn’t come as a surprise that other teams were interested in hiring him, it also shouldn’t be a surprise that Elway hopes that the Broncos are able to retain him.

“He’s done a tremendous job,” Elway said. “He’s had a great year and he’s just got such a great feel, and he’s a hard worker and he’s very bright. I hope he stays.”
