I really hope he holds out until week 8. Not even joking. Would be nice to tag him so cheaply next year. Then we could trade him easier or just make him play on the tag in Kelce 35-year old season

That’s what I thought. I was thinking “make this make sense”

I guess Florio is talking directly with Jones or one of the Katz brothers, because that is very specific reporting.

Someone with superior twitter skills will have to post the link. I saw all that off Dov Kleiman's tweet.

It’s hard to argue against what the Chiefs are doing. Just because a team shattered the market doesn’t mean we have to follow suit.

Their strategy has won two Super Bowls recently.

Soooo Veach offered exactly what the market said he should, $24.66M average salary. I’m actually surprised that Veach basically guaranteed the entire $74M with the $70M guaranteed!

Williams only $66M guaranteed over 4 years, Simmons $59M over 4 years. Hell even Donald’s 3 year $95M only came $65M guaranteed.

Veach is being more than reasonable IMO. Top DT money besides AD and the most guaranteed amount over all DTs.

Exactly. How many is he planning on missing. The math stops making sense pretty quickly.

Sassy Squatch 09-02-2023 12:04 PM

So it's effectively a 2 year extension, but guaranteed most of it.

Sassy Squatch 09-02-2023 12:05 PM

Ooh. Missed where Jones would take 84.5. Honestly, meet in the middle at 80 and let's be friends again.

Why? Maybe even rescind offer and lower it hoping to god he sits out until game 8 saving the Chiefs upwards of 20M dollars while still getting him for the important part of the season.

I dont really care if we have Chris Jones after the 2024-2025 season. Kelce will be 36 years old then.

Sassy Squatch 09-02-2023 12:09 PM

Why has this gotten so ugly? They're at a point where compromise shouldn't be that big a deal, and both parties really aren't being unreasonable at all. Jones at about 28 million through the 2025 season is a BIT rich, but he should still be playing even at a borderline elite level, if not DPOY caliber. I figured he'd be asking for more years which would actually make it really tough, but that's not the case at all.

Also getting a fair bit more than Williams, Simmons and Payne in the next 3 years.

Right. But I can think of plenty of worse ways to use cap than overpaying Jones by maybe 3 million a year. Especially if it's contained to only 3 years.

warpaint* 09-02-2023 12:13 PM

Chiefs offered market, no reason to come off it.

If his agents are being obstinate jackasses, then yep. Just a shame they wouldn't talk so we could find a compromise that both sides could live with.

I’m worried if Veach does indeed overpay what the market says, $24.5-$25M, other agents will point to this when their player comes up for a contract.

I really think Veach is trying to give Jones everything he can to the limit of coming across as overpaying. He offers top DT market money at $24.66M and to try to get it done offers to make most of it guaranteed for him which other DT contracts don’t have.
