it has been a long time since KU had the #1 overall pick talent on their squad...

hopefully McLemore can keep growing and have a Carmelo Anthony like March Madness at lead KU to the promise land.

The offense would be better if McLemore took every shot.

Only seems motivated in big games (see NCAA tournament domination last year). Other than that, pretty lazy indeed.

Definitely part of the problem. He's not a true PG in any sense of the word. Tharpe is much more of one (even though he's often out of control and plays without a brain at times).

Mr. Laz 01-26-2013 05:03 PM

Solid game, never really in doubt
Withey just too much for them
still have issues at Point Guard
would like to see more time for Ellis and Traylor
Rio Adam looked shaky but gotta try him because PG is still issue
where is White?

I think the team can get by with him being lazy through conference play. But, we absolutely need something out of him come NCAA tournament time.

KU will be either #1 or #2 in the polls on Monday. Michigan still has to play at Illinois tomorrow.

Buehler445 01-26-2013 05:17 PM

Man, ugly game, but I really enjoyed it. We played some really great D and I was pretty impressed with OU's defense too. If Withey wasn't around, it would be a way different OU team. They just did nothing at all inside.

I was also impressed with Ellis. He's an entirely different player than a month ago. He's taking some of Young's minutes. And that's super. Young is doing some good things, but unfortunately you have to take the good with the bad, but it warmed my soul to get some production out of Ellis.

I wonder what the deal is with EJ. At first, it was speculation that his knee wasn't 100%, and he hasn't done much of anything in a month. We are going to need him. Particularly with how effective their press was.

In other news, when Releford picked up the dude streaking down the floor, drove him to the baseline and punked his shot, to lead to Withey's dunk, WOW. That might be the best individual defense on a fastbreak I've ever seen. That was incredible. Releford is a defensive prodigy.

KC_Connection 01-26-2013 05:18 PM

17 wins in a row is also the 3rd longest win streak in the Self era trailing 20 (2007-2008) and 18 (2010-2011) both of which were to start seasons..

KU has now won 17 straight. Next best in AP Top 25 is 8 Ws in a row (Oregon & Ole Miss). Only 3 Top 25 teams have 5-plus Ws in a row.

OU is going to need to do something differently offensively in a few weeks at home. Running their offense through Osby against a player like Withey just isn't going to be effective. The only real way to beat a defense like KU's is through outside jump shots (and obviously getting a bit lucky there). As such, I think they significantly underused Pledger today, a great shooter.

Confidence is growing. He'll definitely be leaned on a lot more next year, so that's a good sign.

I think he's just rather lazy and unfocused. It's too bad because he's a major talent and could have had a much better KU career than he's had IMO, but if he's only going to get serious in the big games, I guess we'll just have to take that.

KC_Connection 01-26-2013 05:43 PM

WVU really sucks offensively this season, but that place is never an easy place for anybody to play. And they should be up for it especially if KU is the new #1. Can't afford to get complacent.

Chiefs Pantalones 01-26-2013 05:55 PM

Self says we don't deserve the #1 spot, but if so somebody has to be it. He never thought we'd be in the position to ask him that question.

saphojunkie 01-26-2013 05:58 PM

I'm completely happy with KU not being ranked #1 ever. Anymore, I feel like it's nice to have some ground in front of you to make up.

I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it looks as though we might run the table in the Big 12 this year.

Turning Bramledge into the Hawktagon pretty much killed the only legitimate hope a team had of taking us down. We could still lose a conference game, but there is zero reason for any team to believe they can beat us.

I wouldn't expect a perfect conference season. OSU or ISU could beat KU if they play at a good game at home. They've done it before with worse teams (and even better KU ones). OU could do the same if KU gets lazy (though they might have to change from the awful game plan they had today). And Baylor...meh, the talent is there but those guys can't ever get it together even in Waco.

And this is all assuming KU brings their best effort every game...they haven't done that this season. They can't afford to ever do that on the road or they may lose (like they nearly did at Texas). In the end, it's college basketball and shit just happens.

Yeah, OU needs to get something going. If they get some offense going, they could be tough. I thought they played really well on defense.

That's for damn sure. Outside of that stretch in December, they haven't played to their full potential at all.

Man, this UNC NCState game is some really bad basketball. UNC gives the ball to NCState for a run out. UNC gets open looks and makes about half.

Just lots of really bad basketball. And after curbstomping UNC for 3/4 of the game, NCState goes to ****ing sleep and lets them back in.

Neither team is particularly good. Both very overrated before the season and that's why this game was scheduled as a prime time one months ago.

I'm interested enough to see the outcome, but this is shit basketball. When NCState was running, UNC was playing much worse than Duke @ Miami. Pure shit. And NCState has let them back to within 5. From 28. Dear god.

Why? I want them to be ranked #1 as much as possible. Gets our team exposure and gives us the opportunity to play every game with a bullseye on our back and learn how to play w high expectations.

Agreed. The incredible success of KU's basketball program rarely gets the respect it deserves from the national media, so I'd have no problem seeing it. Also can't be scared of that success and being the best.

I agree with all that. But in reality I don't care until it comes time for seeding.

@ESPNLunardi: Final top line/s (thru 1/26): Kansas/SOUTH (w/Gonzaga), Michigan/MIDWEST (w/Syracuse), Duke/EAST (w/Indiana), Florida/WEST (w/Arizona).

Just out of curiosity, I decided to look up KU's average seed since Bill Self took over. It's 2.2.

It's an astounding 1.5 in the last 6 years. LMAO

Let's look at other traditional powers just to compare (last 9 years, a.k.a. The Bill Self Era):

Duke: 1.9

North Carolina: 2.0 (missed the tournament in 2010, however, so let's just imagine they made it as an 18 seed that year and the average drops to 3.8).

Syracuse: 3.1 (missed the tournament twice in that time period, so the new average using the above logic is 6.4).

Kentucky: 4.5 (missed the tournament in 2009, so again, let's imagine they made it as an 18 seed and the new average is 6.0).

UCLA: 4.8 (missed the tournament a whopping 3 times making their new average a dismal 9.2).

Chiefs Pantalones 01-26-2013 11:46 PM

We haven't even reached our potential yet. We haven't been playing our best basketball. Soon.

teedubya 01-27-2013 12:22 AM

It's just nice to actually root for a team that has success in some way or another in a town that has their choice of the Royals or Chiefs...and I just don't care about SKC or what they bring to the table.

I mean up until 2007-08, while living w/ STL Cardinals fans when they're winning WS and going deep into playoff runs, I thought I'd never see any of my favorite teams win anything. I was too young to remember 1985 not to mention I wasn't even living in KC at the time, I was living in Peoria IL, and again, too young to remember the 85 Bears, but my dad remembers, he went to many games that season. Certainly not old enough to remember the Chiefs SB's in the 60's and 1970. And I was living in KC during Jordan's Bulls so I didn't feel that hometown/state connection like I would have if I stayed in Peoria, even though he was my favorite player, it just didnt feel like it was "my team" I've been to a couple of Bulls games when he played, but I didn't grow up going to those games like I did the Royals and Chiefs.

Then Mario Chalmers hit that 3 pointer. I knew they'd win the game when that happened and sure enough they did. After all of the letdowns from the Roy Williams era, having one of the best teams in college history (1996-97) only to fudge their pants in the tourney....after being Bucknelled and Bradley'd and McNamara raining 3's and KU's inability to hit a FT in the title game against Syracuse.

God damn that was a fantastic feeling when Chalmers nailed that 3. Too bad I didn't get to feel the love w/ hundreds of other people in the bar....I was in a bar in Columbia, MO at the time.

Sideny NE. I went to a bar for the first half of the UN****s game. I couldn't ****ing take that. I had to go home and watch it at my home.

Then when Chalmers hit that three I must have sprinted a mile inside my house. It's a good thing I lived in the country or I'd have disrupted the entire town.

I was there in San Antonio. After party at Rita's on the Riverwalk was epic. I kept running into all sorts of people I knew, who I didn't realize had gone. It was kinda weird sitting out all day at the pool, 80 and sunny. I remember getting back to KC and it was in the low 40s and rainy.

I drove out to Larry right after the win, me and the GF walked up and down Mass St high fiving everyone in sight and taking in the celebration. I'll never forget every store along Mass was selling beer, I think we bought some from a group of Asians that owned a jewelry store. Then we walked back to my car and went to pound town while college kids slapped the windows. I have no recollection of calling in sick the next day, but Im glad my drunken self did. Amazing night.

Jesus ****ing Christ. That'd scare the shit out of me if I were a KU coach. That's just begging for somebody to come in and take out Ben or Withey.

That's some bush league shit right there. Win the ****ing league, league tournament, post season tournament incentives, fine. But really? One school? To me that's asking for a scrub to go dive at Ben's knees.

Right? I mean it is Thuggy Bear after all. He's not necessarily opposed to....well....liberal interpretations of the rules.

Really? You truly believe that? I mean sure, that incentive is unusual. But don't you think that may be a stretch.

The full KU uniform is on a thread at phog.net.

I have it saved to my phone but, can't post here for some reason.

I kind of like them.

The bonus is being paid by Mizzou and KSU fans.

Kansas wins tight race for No. 1 in coaches poll
Quote:

The wild week in college basketball produced the expected shakeup in the USA TODAY Sports coaches poll, resulting in the closest voting for the No.1 spot in over a season.

Kansas moved into the top position, finishing just three poll points ahead of No.2 Michigan. The Jayhawks received 16 first-place votes to the Wolverines' 14. It was the closest finish for No.1 since the poll of Feb. 28, 2011. Kansas was also involved that week, finishing four points behind Ohio State.

KU and Michigan were picked one and two in some order on all but one ballot. That last one had Florida No.1. The Gators actually finished fourth, just a single point behind No.3 Indiana. Duke fell from the top spot to No.5 following a midweek drubbing at Miami (Fla.).

Syracuse slipped two places to No.6, Gonzaga climbed three to No.7 and Arizona fell two to No.8. Michigan State climbed two spots to No.9 despite Sunday's loss to Indiana. The voters were also kind to Butler, which slid only one position to stay in the top 10. The Bulldogs followed a midweek loss at La Salle with a home win against Temple.

Oregon and Mississippi continued to make big moves. The Ducks, now alone atop the Pac-12, vaulted seven places to No.12. The Rebels jumped eight places to No.16. Miami, which followed its upset of Duke with a victory against Florida State, makes a splashy season debut in the poll at No.15.

Virginia Commonwealth dropped out of the rankings after a pair of close losses this week. Marquette claimed the No.25 spot this week, replacing fellow Big East member Notre Dame in the poll.

It is, but I wouldn't put anything past Thuggy.

And, in reality, I'm probably not in favor of regulating what coaches can or cannot hold for incentives.

It's just weird, and IMO totally worthless. Just because KU drops one doesn't mean the coach necessarily did any good or especially that the school will get any benefit.
