This deal should have been done last year

Why is this dragging on so long? Seems like it always does for us. Watch, we'll turn around and trade him for a 3rd round 2027 pick or some shit. I like how our line was the problem and we are actively making it worse.

I hear ya. Just could use the money the extension will give us.

Why do so many of you act like veach is just dropping the ball on these negotiations? The player has to agree to the terms. This should have been done last year? Maybe Smith didn't want to sign a deal last year.

If you insist on continuing to add rational, intelligent, well-thought-out posts to this thread I'm going to have to ask the mods to ban you.

Read the room, sir.

There is nothing to motivate the player in signing a long term deal. He’s got 23M in his pocket.

I actually was listening to the NFL radio network and from my view of what they were saying and their knowledge of the players in the active NFL, players don't like the tag and prefer a long term deal.

The main reason they cite is injury...

The idea is that while a guaranteed 24 million is great.... a $125 million with 55 million guaranteed is a whole lot sweeter and it protects them in a sense.

Imagine a guy plays on the tag, tears his ACL.... His extension or contract with a new team just took a HUGE hit, and he will probably be subject to a smaller contract in terms of years so they can prove they can still perform at that high level...

That's what I took from that segment.

Maybe he secretly wants to sign with the bangles for 2/3 the amount?

I mean I'm willing to freak out about it.

All true. But it’s now after the fact. He’s been tagged. He knows the team will want to do a long term deal that’s friendlier to the salary cap, but there isn’t some sort of deadline. Maybe when OTAs start but beyond that Smith has time. The Chiefs don’t if they need cap space, but there doesn’t seem to be a problem for the Chiefs. Who knows maybe the Chiefs are willing to wait until they have some sort of leverage.

Hope he gets his shit together. That kind of showing in a contract year is worrisome. Especially at his current cap hit.

The deadline is in July. If they haven't reached a deal at that point, he plays on the tag.
