That is true. Kelly being out really hurts their chances at tournament success.

Last I heard was indefinite. And the last time I saw Duke play, which was last week, he was limping real noticeably while walking to the locker room at halftime with the rest of the team.

I heard somewhere he would be back within 2 weeks...pretty sure it was monday after our game against WVU.

Chiefs Pantalones 02-01-2013 12:12 AM

I'm not too sure how much Kelly helps them though. They are still soft with him or without him. Coack K is the Mike D'Antoni of college basketball. The way they play makes them mentally weak, IMO.

Ceej 02-01-2013 12:16 AM

I hate Kelly as much as the next guy.

But he's a pretty good ballplayer. He extends the defense out.

His range pulls big men away from the basket and guard him around the perimeter, which most bigs don't do, and aren't comfortable with.

Oh they can beat people. But consistency is the problem. Curry has been off and Plumlee won't make a move to beat you. Most of his shots are wide open looks off penetration and offensive boards. If a team plays solid defense and Curry isn't lights out there isn't anybody that can straight up beat you.

Great news for them, then. Because without him, they're pretty shitty and will lose any road game against a decent team. With him, they're a NC contender. Brings the entire team together on both ends and prevents teams from collapsing down on Plumlee. They better make sure he's not coming back too early, though, because if he re-injures himself for March, they've got no shot.

so MI beat IL and in AP poll they are #1. BUT....IMO, the REAL poll is the coaches poll. I'd think the coaches would know more than the AP voters so in my mind I've always considered the coaches poll the "real" poll.
oddly enough though, it's the AP poll that is always referenced when defining a teams ranking whether it be on ESPN or during a live game or whatever, it's the AP that they always use.

I don't get it.

I love Beilein's answers about the #1 ranking though. he said next year nobody is gonna remember who was #1 at the end of January.

Well, the month of February is going to be an important one for the Kansas coaching staff. A number of prospects are scheduled to visit, and it's only a matter of time before others pencil in a visit date.

Andrew Wiggins: 6-foot-7, 190-pound small forward

School: Huntington (WV) Prep

Rank: No. 1

Outlook: On Tuesday, Bill Self and Kurtis Townsend visited Huntington (WV) Prep to check in on Wiggins. Currently, the nation's top prospect has taken just one official visit (FSU), but plans to take in visits to Kansas, Kentucky and North Carolina. It's believed that Kentucky and Florida State are the teams to beat, but according to Wiggins and Rob Fulford, Huntington (WV) Prep head coach, that isn't the case.

Fulford told me that Wiggins isn't the type of kid to string along a school or schools just for the attention. If he adds a school to his list, it's because he's seriously interested. Furthermore, Fulford told me that Wiggins will definitely visit Kansas at the end of his season. I know many of you have asked me if Kansas is a serious player for Wiggins, and according to Fulford, the answer is yes.

Julius Randle: 6-foot-9, 240-pound power forward

School: Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano, Texas

Rank: No. 2

Outlook: Reports the last few weeks seem to indicate Kansas is right at the top of Randle's list. Kansas has been recruiting the elite forward as long as any program on his list, and there's no doubt that Randle has an outstanding relationship with the coaching staff.

If familiarity is important to Randle, he is certainly familiar with the Kansas program and the coaching staff. He's been on campus a number of times, and will return for his official visit during the weekend of ESPN College Gameday (2/16/13).

I've maintained for a long time that Kansas is in outstanding position with Randle, and those thoughts haven't changed. Obviously, he is very fond of Coach Self, but also wants to compete at the highest level. He'd be able to do that at Kansas, while also playing relatively close to home.

If you ask me, Kansas is in outstanding position when it comes to its recruitment of Julius Randle.

Tyus Jones: 6-foot-1, 171-pound guard

School: Apple Valley (MN) High School

Rank: No. 3 in 2014 class.

Outlook: There's simply no denying that Jones is about as good as it gets when it comes to prospects in the 2014 class. In fact, he's so good that Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan State, North Carolina, Ohio State and others have extended scholarship offers to the elite floor general.

When I first exchanged text messages with Jones months ago, he indicated that he grew up a big Kansas fan. Now, Jones will make his way to Lawrence, Kan., the weekend of February 23 for a visit. I'm hoping to chat with Jones before he arrives on campus, but we recently exchanged a few text messages and he's fired up about the visit.

All the heavy hitters are making a strong push for Jones, but growing up a Kansas fans can only help its chances with regards to the top floor general in the class.

Ahmed Hill: 6-foot-4, 185-pound shooting guard

School: Aquinas High School in Augusta, Ga.

Rank: No. 25 in 2014 class

Outlook: I exchanged a few text messages with Hill, the No. 25 ranked player in the class, this past spring and summer, but we then went several months without contact. However, late last week, Hill sent me a text message saying a member of the staff had been out to watch him, and he's planning to visit Kansas this season.

Hill, with interest from Duke, Indiana, Kansas, North Carolina, and others, didn't hold back when talking about his interest in Kansas. During our conversation, Hill said he's very interested in Kansas and will be out for a visit this season.

Joshua Perkins: 6-foot-2, 175-pound point guard

School: Regis Jesuit in Aurora, Colo.

Rank: No. 42 in 2014 class

Outlook: Perkins has never publicly stated that Kansas is his leader, but if you ask me, I get the feeling that Kansas is currently the team to beat. A week or so ago, Coach Self stopped by Regis Jesuit to watch a game, and shortly thereafter, Perkins narrowed his list of schools.

During an interview with Jayhawk Slant, Randy Perkins, the father of Josh Perkins, had nothing but glowing things to say about Self and the University of Kansas. It was at that time that Mr. Perkins indicated that he was in the process of figuring out the best date to visit Kansas. Again, I've never been told that Kansas is the leader for Perkins, but it's just a feeling I have at this time.

Some quality kids here guys.

I'm hopeful in 2017 there is another kid on this list. Jordan Terry, my grandson. Currently an 8th grader, been playing Fr. & JV ball as a starter to speed up is skill & mind set of the faster pace games.

He has adjusted well, he likes a faster game, 6'5" and has plenty of athletic ability. He has been playing some mop up duty on varsity games, but minimal to date, has had a couple of dominate stints vs other JV players in varsity games.

Last night he called upon to fill in and got his 1st start on varsity vs opposing varsity players. The HC had been holding him back vs some varsity games. Last night they cut him loose, right away got 2 quick fouls, talking about jitters! But he recovered well ended up with 11 points, 5 boards, 2 steals and 3 blocks, oh and 4 fouls. For half a game, I was pleased with his performance against kids that are Jr & Sr's.

He gets his 2nd start tonight in a game, I hope he stays humble and hungry. I also need to break him away from this Louisville love fest he has.

Don't mean to distract from the current conversation but what does KU need to improve to be title contenders this year? You guys see a lot more play than I do. My take is...

1. Shoot better from outside
2. better point guard play
3. rebound better especially offensively

Thoughts? I've only been able to watch 4 games this season so far.

Elijah seems passive to me. Am I right or no? Just not good enough? He was such an up and comer last year but this year he's just the 5th guy on the court and Naadir isn't ready to take over although he's improved. My take in watching 4 games...

Only one word comes to mind in regards to Elijah: lazy.

I hope, hope, hope he's sleepwalking through conference play. I hope he takes it up a notch very very soon.

The good thing is Ellis is staring to pick things up.

They have to improve no doubt. If we play like we did against CU nobody is stopping us. I think we'll get the #1 overall seed FTR.

I did notice Ellis was picking up the pace last game.

This is why I usually just read this thread. I don't see nearly what you all do. Not a lot of Big 12 on in Illinois unless ESPN is showing it.

I was going to post the same question about EJ. What's wrong? First it was not recovering from injury. Then it was confidence. Then it was not a true PG.

Lazy would be good. Lazy means the potential is still there. I'm concerned that he's a different player than last year.

Okay.

I never critiqued his defense, so scarf down a bowl of penises.

If you don't think he's been lazy on the offensive end -- especially when he makes a stupid ****ing pass or turnover -- I feel for you.

nah, i feel for KU fans...a sorry ass bunch

Don't mean to distract from the current conversation but what does KU need to improve to be title contenders this year? You guys see a lot more play than I do. My take is...

1. Shoot better from outside
2. better point guard play
3. rebound better especially offensively

Thoughts? I've only been able to watch 4 games this season so far.

They already are title contenders (along with teams like Florida, Michigan, Duke (with Kelly), Indiana, and Syracuse). They're a better team than the one that went to the finals last year. They just have to stay healthy (mainly Withey), not be complacent/lazy (which I would hope they won't be in the tournament) and get lucky. There are some minor things they can do to get better like not make so many ****ing turnovers for no reason, but I still think that's a complacency issue.

i've been around a lot longer than the fanboi's bleeding about the #1 team in the country having 'lazy' starters...

And that makes what difference to me?

It's really a difference of opinion. And as for me, I've said EJ. That's singular. I've never said KU has multiple, lazy starters.

You think EJ hasn't been lazy.

I think EJ has been lazy.

We could do circles all night.

From your keyboard to God's ears. I'd still like to see them play a hell of a lot better... as they should do as we go along.

you have to be a ****ing idiot to refer to such a player as 'lazy'...but it's possible, because i find most ku fans are, in fact, idiots...

complaining about wins and players on winning team are ku fans most frequent hobbies...

He is lazy, though. Call it unfocused or complacent or careless (I think Self has used these terms to describe his play this year), but it's just a different way of calling him lazy. He can and should be far better than he's played this season.

I still have confidence that he'll come through in the big games/moments like he did last season (and like he's done somewhat this season). But he needs to be better.

no, there's you saying the typically dumb ku fan thing...

then there is the objective reality that the #1 team in the country with a 19 game win streak doesn't have a 'lazy' starter...no need to even mention the fact that Self didn't become the best coach in basketball by playing 'lazy' players...

you're not just wrong, you're insulting Self...typical spoiled ku fan nonsense

He's a senior right? He better do better if he wants to be drafted.

The defense is good enough to keep them in the game against any team in the nation (except perhaps Florida...they're playing out of their minds right now). And that defense was really all they needed to make the finals last year. But sure, the offense could be better and they need to take care of the ball better. Still think that comes down to complacency, though, because they have shown the ability to score and go on runs when they absolutely need to.

he's not

he's being asked to do something he is not capable of doing...and we have no one else to do it...he is what he is, a limited 2 guard being asked to be a point guard...

when the offense ran through taylor and robinson, EJ was fine as a 3rd wheel two guard...now that he has to initiate the offense his limitations are painfully obvious

the guy was a starter on a team in the national championship game, and now the #1 team with the best defense in college..for the love of ****ing christ spare me with the 'lazy' bullshit

Probably too late for that at this point with the way he's played all year. But there's still a month or so remaining for him to turn a few heads.

Well complacency needs to stop soon. I'm the first to say "hey they're kids" but the deeper into a season you go the more adults need to come out.

I've had a lot of respect for you and your posts..but man.

You're pounding your chest because you have an opinion about a player on the #1 team in the nation. But, my opinion is wrong because I'm some fanboi who hasn't been around forever -- whatever that ****ing means.

You keep mentioning defense where I never originally mentioned anything about his ****ing defense, stupid.

He's incredibly lazy with the basketball and he makes lazy mistakes.

But, please, tell me how calling Elijah lazy insults Bill Self more too.

Numbnuts.

Bullshit. He can do it just fine. Perhaps not as well as some that have come through here, but he can manage getting through games without making 5 careless turnovers every night. The kid's an incredibly talented individual and he's shown the ability to handle difficult situations throughout his entire career.

I'm not sure why either of those things means he hasn't played lazy this year. Basketball players are lazy all the time, especially incredibly good/talented ones. Look no further than the awful stretches this KU team has had in games over the last month where the effort level wasn't there.

HEY YOU. YEAH YOU. CUT THAT SHIT OUT, FANBOI!!

Dr. Johnny Fever 02-01-2013 10:17 PM

I'd just like for us all to stop using "fanboi" because we aren't a bunch of f a g g o t s.

Ceej 02-01-2013 10:19 PM

For some reason using "boi" makes me think of the Chinese.

I can assure all of you I'm 100% jew.

i just pointed out that you were wrong...and many dumb ku fanboi's share your wrong opinion...i generally hate our fanbase for this reason

it blows my mind to read all this nonsense...it is not ****ing possible to play the way Self insists that KU plays, to have the success they have, to have the best defense in college, to be undefeated in conference and be lazy....it...is....not...possible

players make mistakes, some just are limited or not that good..but lazy? at KU? please...

watch a god damn MU game...that is ****ing lazy...watch a baylor game...
