I think it was just a fooling around basket. Like when there's a stoppage of play and a player goes ahead and casually lays it in.

Yes and no... it definitely helps KU in terms of toughness and preparing for traps/pressing defenses.... but, what Maryland did was a poor man's WVU. Or a poor man's poor man's WVU. It was basically the least you could do while still looking like you're trapping.

It wasn't just on the traps. It was generally physical defense.

Well....yeah. But still they looked like they had no problem defeating it. If they were to run into a VCU type team they would be able to handle it.
