Basically, we both leave...break our lease and pay until the landlord finds someone new and if she doesn't find anyone...we just pay until the lease is over in July?

What about credit?

I rent in Oklahoma and my agreement is that I have to pay a penalty of one month's rent If I break the lease.

I think the option to consult a lawyer would be your best bet. Find one that will give you a free referral visit. We did that once on a different issue and was only charged $50 for the consult, plus we got the answer we needed for our situation.

Which "she" talked to an attorney? Your ex, or the landlord?

I've heard that ploy before. How much of a liar is the chick (ex)?

His ex. He should definitely trust everything she says.

No shit, it sounds to me like she wants to stay in the house for only half the rent. But then again, who wouldn't?

At your age I would just walk away from that. You probably don't have any credit to ruin. Let the ex worry about it.

IIRC, I think you can get out by paying the penalty for the termination of the lease.

Something you should check up with your landlord.

Yeah, if the penalty for termination is whatever the rest of the rent is, there is no way I can pay all that up front.

It could be less than the rent is, but it's something you'll have to look into with the landlord.

I'm sure the landlord won't object as long as he/she gets half of the money for the unit that you were supposed to stay, provided that your ex does pay her half and all.

If it were, why would you have to - just pay out the rest of the lease as scheduled.

It's probably a fraction of the remaining moneys - 25% or something like that.

Bugeater 12-04-2007 10:53 PM

The only problem with any scenario regarding termination of the lease is that you have to get your ex to agree to it. This conversation is basically moot if that doesn't happen.

She's getting her "people" involved in trying to get out of it. I called the landlord earlier and told her what was going on. Now, I'm an idiot for "screwing her over".

Your lawyer will be able to give you some good advice. We are all just speculating and being smart asses here.

Good luck - dealing with women is typically less than fun and then it gets worse.
