All I know is that it has something to do with vampires and that the chick is hot.

LMAO

That is a pretty amusing quote.

It's like the TV version of Buffy(post Kristy Swanson) but on the big screen.

And also the complete lack of eroticism, which is troubling in a piece of vampire fiction. Everything about the vampire mythos is inherently erotic and even drangerously erotic: the penetration, the draining and exchanging of bodily fluids, the monstrous "Other" presenting an irresistible sexual threat to our women -- even transforming them into the threatening Other.

Twilight, well, lacks that erotic element. It is like the episode of Heroes that will air tonight where the characters lose their superpowers. Without the powers, why should the audience care? Likewise, what good is vampire fiction without the eroticism?

Everytime I try to read your avy, it reads; `Awesome.`

Anyone who has listened to the album would say that it essentially does read exactly that.

What's so amusing about it?

Ultra Peanut 11-25-2008 07:47 AM

Pat, the first book isn't the entire story. It progressively moves from banal to flippin' crazy.

"It's okay to treat someone who would do anything for you like shit because he's not as hot as Edward!"

Also, about that vampire dick?

He sparkles in the sun and glowers at me and stalks me! That's all you could ask for in a guy!

Edward is seen as the perfect guy, even though he's got so many warning signs he should glow in the dark instead of sparkle in the sun. Everything about the books is dangerous.

Not only that, but it encourages a fascination by girls with the dangerous/dark boys. Edward is, literally, within seconds of ripping Bella's throat out at any given moment due to some weird blood-type fatal attraction that makes her particular blood like heroin for a junkie. So, they're constantly dancing this very dangerous dance where she could die at any moment, but she just can't stay away from him because he's oh so dreamy.

On top of that, Edward is constantly in control of the relationship. He can kiss her. She, though, can't kiss him. I've read the first book (it's part of my job to read this crap, sorry), and I didn't really get much of an abstinence message from it. I did, however, get very disturbing notions about gender roles and sexual power relationships from it.

I realize that there are 4 books. I also realize that they probably won't be taught in American Literature classes anytime soon. But what I don't see is the supposed abstinence message or rightwing/mormon morality message that was attributed to it. If you think the story is banal or in some other way less impressive than, for example, Interview with the Vampire, I don't have a problem with that critique. I thought the movie was OK for what it was, a teenage version of a vampire story, but it's not great and afaic it shouldn't be mistaken for a wholesome example of conservative family values.

GF finally talked me into watching this last night, and it was much better than I anticipated.

For a girl movie, it was solid, and I will probably see the next movies in the series. Some of you were way too negative about it.

I took the time to read one of the books in the series. Eh. It wasn't garbage, per se, but it lacked the edge that I have come to expect from the vampire mythos. My daughter brought the movie home from her mother's house, so I will likely sit down and watch it sometime in the next day or so.

If you want some insane vampire novels, replete with horror and gore both, I would strongly recommend the Necroscope series by Brian Lumley. There are 13 or 14 books in the series now, and they are absolutely mind-blowing. These vampires are not romantic... they are nasty, aggressive killing machines.
