Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli makes it clear that getting QB Matt Cassell killed is high on his list of priorities for the ‘09 season. A surprised Greg can only note that, “watching Eric Ghiaciuc start and play all 16 games for the 2008 Bengals as their center was like watching a garden hose spray water at a screen door. Everything got through.” WDR just can’t believe the news.

At least Bengals fans can stop worrying about the possibility that Cincinnati will re-sign Ghiaciuc now. At least until KC wises up.

That bengal fan is a bit extreme, I watch the Bengals almost weekly (unfortunately) and he was a pretty solid starter. I don't think he will start for us, but is another solid depth pickup.

He IS Rudy Niswanger. Only an inch shorter.

Maybe our OL coaches can make something out of him.

I agree. Niswanger should win the starting job but I like the fact he will have to earn it from this guy and possibly Smith.

Has there been any indication on what type of blocking scheme the chiefs will use? Last year I recall a switch to the zone scheme, but that seems to have failed, and with new coaches in place it probably changes. Maybe this guy fits the scheme better than in Cincy.

Isn't being shorter theoretically a good thing for a center (i.e. lower center of gravity etc.)?

Tackling dummies are getting pricey these days.

Yes, but it doesn't make a bit of difference if you suck.

This signing does bring up the question of what sort of blocking scheme is going to be used by the Chiefs this season to my mind. Has anyone heard whether they might be going with zone blocking, by any chance?

Yes, but 1 inch is really negligible. And having good knee bend can generally overcome it.

Niswanger's biggest problem isn't his height, it's that he lacks good bend.

IIRC, they've said they're going to alter the blocking schemes, but I can't remember if they gave any detail surrounding that.

I actually don't think this guy was that bad until last year, and maybe that just had something to do with the whole team?

Adrian Jones was definitely bad enough to drag down the guys around him. The problem is that one of them (McIntosh) is horribly bad in his own right, so it's hard to tell.

Getting cut by the Bengals can only mean one thing. He's a good character guy. Not mean enough to get repeat arrests? You're outta here.
