If I could get a 20% increase on top of what I make in Seattle, I'd move south to podunk anywhere and be a ****ing king.

Hilo was popular. Does everyone know how much it rains there though?

Hilo gets 142 inches of rain per year. The US average is 37. It is also very remote.

Too rainy for me. I would consider Oahu (Kailua) in Hawaii. It is close to Honolulu for the city attractions but also far enough away to enjoy the "Paradise" of Hawaii

Yeah, but I like to think that his polling techniques would be less advanced.

God willing, my next move will be to a remote, sparsely-populated area with plenty of land available...or Phuket, Thailand. Also, what if the cost of living adjustment is negative? I wouldn't want that.

So, put us to the test. Anyone want to offer me a 20% raise and move me somewhere? Whatcha got?

BigRedChief 05-20-2009 07:40 AM

I get about 3-4 emails a day with companies/consults wanting to know if I would be interested in this or that position in "X" state/city.

Usually the only ones I will respond to are the ones in Southern Cal, Arizona and Florida.

I'll pay you 20% more than I'm paying you right now to move to Moose Nut, Wyoming.

Perhaps you should just annoy the czar.

You left off Seville, Spain...

Which is where I moved to accept a job offer six months ago. In my career field we receive overseas opportunities on a fairly regular basis. I'd hemmed and hawed at actually accepting such an offer before I finally got the gumption to overcome inertia and make the move from the US to Europe.

It wasn't a difficult decision as such. Divorced, grown child, not a home owner, so no established roots - makes it easier to just 'haul up tent stakes'. I was certainly willing to move to Spain as I had spent three years in Madrid 20 or so years ago and loved it--that made the idea of moving away easier.

My paycheck also increased, and I'm blessed to say quite a bit more than 20%--that made the idea of moving even easier!

Does everyone really take naps in the afternoon?

Heh, the Spanish Gov'ts position is that the siesta tradition should be eliminated. The reality is not so much. Most stores in the city don't close from 1:30-4:00 every afternoon anymore (a practice that was prevalent in even in Madrid in the late 1980s) but in the provinces, it's liklier than not that most people nappy-bye or just plain rest in some form or another for 45 min. or so in the mid-day...

joesomebody 05-20-2009 08:32 AM

I picked what I picked. Don't feel like going through them all again. Is *****et really a place? That is cool, but I wouldn't live in Thailand. Might visit, that's where they filmed that move 'The Beach' right?

As for any city in the world, I have no idea. I have been a lot of places (more than the average American I would say) and I really can't think of a favorite place. I enjoyed northern Utah except for the strange Mormon culture. Japan was fun, but too far away from loved ones, same for Europe, plus most of the people I've encountered in Europe are genuine assholes.

Colorado is nice, except for their sports teams.
