I don't understand how it would work...he fumbled the ball out of the EZ, but would have gotten a personal foul on the play...if they call the penalty, where do they spot the ball? at the one inch line? It was not a TD...he lost possession, but the penalty would have happened before the loss of the ball, so...

Someone help me because I really don't know the answer. Let's say the play is exactly the same - helmet to helmet hit, ball fumbled into end zone & out of bounds - only difference is that they call the helmet to helmet penalty on Sorenson. Where is the ball placed and who has it?

It’s essentially a 1” penalty.

I don't believe that is a spot foul, so if they would have called that, and not the holding, it would have been 15 yards from the original snap and an automatic first down.

Yep that is how I view it as well. I wouldn't be on here bitching about the helmet hit if that happened to us but I would be bitching about the guy reaching for the pylon like that.

These guys are making split-second decisions on the angles to take. I really doubt Sorensen was thinking about much more than trying to keep the guy from getting in the endzone.
