It's a piece of hardware that you connect to your TV delivers programming via streaming. One-time purchase, no monthly fee. I paid $300 for it mainly to get Chiefs games like the one on Sunday. It has every channel known to man, including local network channels from every market. It can be buggy, and sometimes the streams buffer. If the KCTV stream isn't great, then I can choose a stream from the 36 other markets that will be broadcasting the Chiefs. It can also be called an Andriod box, though Mars uses their own proprietary software which is better than "Blue TV" which is what most Android boxes use.
A friend of mine uses the Mars box for all of his TV, but I still use DirecTV and just use the Mars box for out of market Chiefs games, PPV events (like UFC), and movies. There is no DVR but they have "Replay" where you can watch the last several seasons of most of the popular shows.

There are other ways of doing something similar through the Firestick, or on your laptop, but not sure how those work.
There are posters here that think this box is a waste of money, but it has served its purpose for me so far. To each his own.
