They've definitely been above average, but make no mistake about it, they have benefited from having top 5 picks, and they've added talented players by going all-in and trading picks.

I don't think we need to be worried.

Sam Madison would be a logical replacement if Merritt leaves for SF.

Per the Rooney Rule, the 49ers have to interview at least two minority candidates. Not to imply Merritt isn't deserving, but it seems similar to the situation they just got out of with Wilks, in that they'd be bringing in an outside guy to run their system. I bet they promote someone internally.

He's a free agent now as it was just announced the dolphins are switching up their defensive staff after Fangio left.
