I will say that while most of my Army bros absolutely hated the place I had a pretty good time when off post and away from the training environment. It was even reasonably safe to hop over the boarder into Juarez, but from what I've read that's no longer the case.

Interesting, guess I wasn't aware of the army base. That would certainly add some input to the experience for sure!

Yeah, the demos and business I was doing was for "maquiadoras" (sp) companies that had locations on both sides of the border. Thompson telivisione was one making tvs on the same assembly line for several big names. Quite an operation as were several. We are talking around close to 30 years ago now so a lot has probably changed.

I prefer to be positive, but if you ever have driven into Liberal, Kansas south bound on Hwy 54 there is no way to spin it as a positive. I large hill of junk cars, followed by packing plants and trailer parks. Makes a person feel good about where you live.

Believe it or not, it gets far worse the further southwest you keep driving from there.

...

One of my best friends married a woman from El Paso and moved there for several years. (He was raised in Missouri.) They eventually moved back to Missouri for their own reasons, but I remember him telling me that every morning in the newspaper there was a map of where cars had been stolen the previous night. Apparently people would come across the border to steal cars, and once they got back over the line the car would be gone forever.

I don't think I'd ever want to live within 50 miles of the border, other than maybe - MAYBE - San Diego.

Made that trip a bunch, intersecting to I-40 at Tucumcari NM on the way out west. Such an interesting drive.

There was a salvage yard in Gallup that was incredible with a bat shit crazy owner. He had a Snapon tool box collection that was shocking. Every room in this house was full of Snapon tool boxes, no way anyone could live in it, no room.

Put the money down on a 340 Duster and when I went back to get it, he had sold it to someone else saying I took too long.

Wow, yeah that would be a deterent for sure. I was only there a couple times and both times it was great. Had no problems crossing the border in either direction. The weather was awesome, just everything. That golf course is way under rated.

Played at several courses around San Diego, they were great as well.

But yeah, you are right there at the border and that could be a real issue.

**edit** Your stolen car newspaper comment reminds me of when we were stationed in Rhode Island. They had no titles to cars and the stolen car reports were a regular on the radio.

I lived in Olathe and I’ve lived in Wichita. Comparing a metro with 2.5 million people to one with 650k is asinine. Both metros have their pros and cons. Someone said it earlier, if your a single, 20 something living in Wichita, your entertainment options, that are conducive to your young interests, are limited. If you’re a family starting out, want affordable living and family oriented activities, Wichita for its size is pretty accommodating. Wichita now, is not the Wichita of the late 80s and 90s.

Both places have their $hit-hole areas. You’re lying to yourself if you believe KC is immune and free of societal riff-raff and degenerate hotspots. I reside in Wichita and enjoyed my time in Olathe. If I were to move to a bigger city, KC would be it. I refer to it as a small ‘big city’. KC still has Midwest values and charm. Can’t we all just get along?

Probably didn’t help driving through when they were burning a billion acres of prairie

It has to be done to take care of the grass; with that being said we catch hell from doodah and kc for the smoke

Yeah, we bought our first two homes there and raised our daughters there. We left in 96.

Both won't go back now as they agree it has changed and not for the better. Like anything though, it is probably what you make of it. I heard there is tremendous amount of homeless, like a lot of metro areas. Sad.
