They are a solid group. Lattimer is my co-pilot. He obviously has seen some action, I don't think I will ask him about that scar until I get to know him better.

My bombardier, Slayer Diablo, is nothing but a crawdad-eyed raw recruit. Hell, someone has already had him looking for blinker fluid for the last 2 hours, but I think he will catch on quick.

We have an Indian for a navigator, go bo. So far all I have seen him find is the local officer's club. We have had to drag him out of their a couple of times before he was caught - definitely has an eye for fire water. If we keep him sober he should be one of the best mappers in our squadron.

KCJohnny is my engineer. He has some extensive military background and seems to be more than he is. You know the OSS has several missions going on right now with lot's of undercover soldiers helping out. I don't mind if it is for the good of our country, but he had better realize there is only one rooster on this plane.

Radio Operator, Redcoats58 seems like an amicable guy. Easy to get along with and always has some inside info for us, just the right guy for the radio.

Our Tail Gunner is voyager. I don't see any possible scenario he hasn't thought of. I just hope he isn't running through them and wondering what might have been instead of actually acting on the data he has.

Our other gunners, Ball Turret Gunner munkey, Right Waist Gunner TheFly, and Left Waist Gunner cdcox are all stand up fellas with a lot to prove. But they seem to already have some previous battle seasoning and don't look like they will take guff from anyone. These are the guys I want by me when a barroom brawl breaks out, or a war.

England is beautiful in the summer, but it is more like fall in Lousiana. There is a constant smell of mist in the air, kinda like New Orleans on a foggy morning. The guys are always pushing for leave and I have to bail them out of trouble constantly. I think at least 3 MPs have already saved up enough money from our group to buy a vacation house in Havana. But it ain't nothing but little trouble they get into, a fight here, a mad husband there. They really are a good crew.

Oh, our plane is the Red, White, and Blew By You. I thought you would like that considering that Blue Bayou is the name we chose for our farm and ranch when I get home.

Hell, I might even write a song about it. There are a couple of fellas here who can help me with the music as I already got the lyrics figured out - Joe Melson and Roy somebody. I didn't get Roy's last name, but he sure has a funny voice when he sings.
Sorry about the cursing, it just comes easy now hanging around all these guys all the time. I will work on it.

Well, I gotta hit the hay. We have a full day of briefing tomorrow and I want to be fresh. Go by my house and tell momma I will write her this week. Check on daddy. You know how he thinks he can move mountains by himself. Gene said he would help with any chores that need more than one man until I get back. Love always and your picture will always be right by my side.

Dear Mom and Dad:

I'm just back from our first bombing run. Our bombardier didn't make it back. I never even found out where he was from. I asked him one day and he just said, "The outskirts of town." The only other notable thing about him was he had these big yellow teeth. I used to hate to look at them, but I feek kinda bad about it now since he got hit in the face and probably doesn't have any teeth anymore.

I'm okay. Most of the action was on the other side of the plane, so I didn't even get to fire my weapon. Captain said it was cause they heard what a dead eye I am. He's a good egg, even if he does talk a little funny, coming from Louisiana and all. One thing I'll say, riding in Red, White and Blew by You is way different than driving the tractor back in Kansas.

Even though we lost a guy, I feel like we got off easy compared to Tequila Rose (that's another plane) that had their mission earlier in the day. They pulled two dead people off that plane, and 4 more that were hit. One of those died later in the hopital. Even the pilot was hit, but he landed the plane through it all. I'll tell you that after I saw the medics pulling all those bloody people off the plane, I was having real second thoghts about going up there myself. With a mission under my belt, I'm feeling a little better about it.

You know when I came over here, I felt kinda funny about fighting against the Germans, seeing how Grandma and Grandpa came over when they were kids. But now, after seeing what happened to Slayer and the TR crew, I know that I'm doing the right thing.

Have pastor say a prayer for me and the other boys over here. We are gonna need it. Say hi, to Otilia, Esther, Dorothy, Verna, Mildrid, Mary Ann, Robert, Jr., Harold, Bill, and Lindel for me. Don't worry too much.

Love,

cdcox

Mr. and Mrs. Diablo,

It is with heavy heart I inform you of your son's passing.

Slayer Diablo was a hero in all meanings of the word. He gave his life over Germany so that others could continue the assault against an evil empire. Slayer slipped his mortal coil without pain. He showed a resolve reserved only for real men during this time of crisis, he was intent on completing all tasks set forth and doing so with vim and vigor. He was a shiny example for all my crew. He died completing his mission and creating damage that the Germans will not easily recover from.

I have included Slayer's personal effects with this letter. He was a good kid and will be sorely missed.

Sincerely Captain Wolfman

Dearest Cindy,

War is ugly on many levels, some never foreseen. The terrible action is nothing like the Errol Flynn movies we have seen, the carnage is horrible and the circumstances much more dire. I watched a boy die as he was struck directly in the face with enemy fire, there was nothing that could be done. Then I lied to his parents so that their lasting memories would be one of pride and honor in their family name.

The planes that come at you come from all angles, usually from above and out of the sun. You see and hear nothing until the last moment. The bullets go through our frame like a Ted Williams bat through a wet paper towel. If a bullet happens to stay in the plane, it is still hot enough to scorch the metal it lays upon. Our radio operator almost went up in a hailstorm that struck his equipment. Had he not had the equipment there, I would have authored two letters instead of one.

Don't get me wrong, Cindy, I don't fear death. As Pastor Michaels says, we can't stop the inevitable. But I fear for my men and keeping up their morale. We must stop the cursed Huns before the amass enough power to come overseas and continue their heartless carnage. We will never be able to do so if we don't have the heart and resolve to continue on in the face of extreme adversity.

The kid who died was the bug-eyed one on the bombadier rack, Slayer Diablo. He never was nothing, but a simple farm hand with a taste for Nehi soda and playing Go Fish. The boys razzed him all the time about not gambling, not drinking, and not girl chasin', but it didn't seem to bother him at all. His loss has greatly affected our crew, regardless of what they say.

I told his parents he completed his mission and wreaked havoc on the enemy. That was a blatant lie, our mission was a failure in all senses of the word save the fact that we came back home safe. I felt the lie was necessary, but I prayed the Lord forgive my decision and look upon my lies with mitigation I served his parents. God forgive me, it was the lesser of two evils.

Cindy, forget me not, and pray for me daily. My love for you, my family, and my country keep me going and give me the strength I need to complete this horrid action in Europe.
