During the whole Favre saga this offseason...you had Mort and Clayton and all of the talking heads "guaranteeing" this and that...I heard several sound bites of these guys guaranteeing he'd stay retired... If Cowher gets offered everything he wants and his family gives him the thumbs up, he'll be back...I don't listen to these talking heads...they can steer you in the right direction but guarantees mean nothing. |

I'm fine with a defensive focus, obviously... I don't need the next coach in Denver to be a big name at all. I just want them to be smart about it.
The Broncos have a nice young foundation on offense and solid pieces on both sides, but the defense really needs focus. |

I could live with Shanny here. coming here would be just another slap in crazy Al's face. LOL
|
I think Shanny wants some time off and Bowlen and Shanny agree that the gig is up in Bronco-land, and Bowlen firing him is a favor that ensures Shanny a paycheck during his vacation whether it be for a year, two or three.
I think the chances of this being less than amicable or Shanny coaching anywhere else in 2009 or even 2010 are very remote. |

You guys are free. Finally.
http://www.orangemane.com/BB/showthread.php?t=75565
It was becoming dangerous. Shanahan had a grip on Denver like no one. You all wanted to believe he could return the Broncos to glory, but he kept falling so horribly short time after time. And yet some of you continued to believe. Embarrassing playoff blowouts. One non-playoff season. Two non-playoff seasons. Finally, three non-playoff season. And yet some of you STILL wanted to believe. Shanahan had too much power. Absolute power corrupts absolutely and Shanahan's failings on the defense side of the bail, his absolute inability to hire the right defensive coordinator, his pathetic attempts at selecting defensive players, were HOLDING YOUR FRANCHISE BACK. He wasn't going to let go of that go of that power. Bowlen did what had to be done. And now you are free. It is ironic that Carl Peterson and Mike Shanahan both were ousted from the franchises they were holding back for the last ten years in 2008. Now we are free. FREE AT LAST! Breathe the free air my friends. I find I'm so excited, I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it's the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend, and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope. |

REALLY?!? I'm not a shanny fan. hate the guy. but to say that some of those denver offenses weren't great (a guy doesn't run for 2k yards in a season without having a great offense) is quite asinine. jesus. I wish we had some of their 'good' offenses. |
I was trolling the Drane thread on this - a surprising number of Donx fans actually want Marty. I thought that was rather amusing.

Just like we hated Elway, we still respected him. Saw this in the bar tonight during dinner and almost choked. I'd take him. He's like Jeff Fisher as far as hate vs. respect goes.

Wow. Color me surprised. I thought Shanny and Greasy Al were in a "See who can suck the life out of our respective franchises" competition.

You gotta think Cowher gets his asking price in Denver now.

SHANAHAN HAS SOMETHING UP HIS SLEEVE?
Posted by Mike Florio on December 30, 2008, 7:51 p.m. EST The immediate speculation in some league circles when word broke of the termination of long-time Broncos coach Mike Shanahan is that Shanahan has something else cooking, and that he forced his firing by refusing to agree to changes that owner Pat Bowlen wants to make. According to Jeff Legwold of the Rocky Mountain News, part of that speculation is right on the money. Per Legwold, Shanahan was fired because he refused to fire defensive coordinator Bob Slowik, whose unit surrendered 52 points in a Week Seventeen loss to the Chargers. Said Bowlen, in a release issued by the team: “After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos. This is certainly a difficult decision, but one that I feel must be made and which will ultimately be in the best interests of all concerned. “I appreciate the 21 years that Mike Shanahan has given to the organization as an assistant and head coach, and the two Super Bowl wins in that time. His contributions hold a special place in Broncos history.” So if Shanahan wanted to get out of town because he has something else cooking, what might it be? Believe it or not, there’s speculation that Shanahan is trying to position himself for the Chargers job. What’s that, you say? The Chargers are in the playoffs and they’ve made it clear that Norv Turner is coming back as head coach? That was our reaction, too. But a highly-placed league source suspects that something is happening with Shanahan and San Diego. In our book, it’s almost as unlikely as Shanahan coaching the Raiders. But we’ll continue to keep our eyes peeled on this one |
Yeah, don't know about that. If AJ Smith can't handle Marty's desire for control, you'd think he'll have a real hard time with Shanahan.

That is all, please resume predictable jabberwocky. |
As I watched the game Sunday night the first thing I noticed was da' Rat looked really nervous. He didn't look calm, cool & collected in the slightest bit.

A predictable reaction...especially since you announced yesterday that Shanny will be going nowhere. Is this your 'Get it out of your system now, Shanahan apologists!' thread? Here's the revised version..... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ...please. We know you want to get keep Mike Shanahan, so go ahead and get it out of your system now. Pretty soon, though, it's going to be clear that Shanahan is going somewhere else, and the focus will no longer be on whether Shanahan should be here or not, but what happens next. So get it out now, but please - when that focus shifts to reality, lets keep the discussion on the moves the Broncos are making, and not the man, and have a productive offseason of discussion. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Seems pretty reasonable to me! I don't think you'll have long-term stability for quite a while, which is discomforting. But for the franchise as a whole, I think it's a good thing overall. Just go to sleep feeling safe that Pat Bowlen isn't Clark Hunt and that unfortunately for Chiefs fans, Denver is a more attractive destination than Cleveland, Detroit and Kansas City. |
How can you say that, Dane?
You were wrong about Clark Hunt. |

Everyone knew that Peterson was to be fired. Herm's still employed. And regardless, Denver is a more attractive "destination". Not job, or fans, or city. Destination. |

I hope i get on the internet later in the afternoon and see Herman Edwards has been fired!
I can dream cant i? |
I haven't logged on to the Mane just because I don't have time for the insanity...
I can see both sides to fan reaction, but some folks are just too scared (or irrational) to think that maybe, just maybe... there is another coach that could come in and do well. Broncos' fans have become spoiled a bit, we've become used to 'competing' each year, whether it was real or not... Denver rarely had a losing record and they always seemed to be in the hunt for the divisional title. That's not to suggest they were annual threats to win the SB, they were not... but, it's been a while since Denver fans have had to suffer through seasons like those of KC, DET, CLE, etc. Know what I mean? Even prior to Shanahan, the Broncos under Reeves were always competitive. Many fans see Shanahan as the only guy that can coach this team and I understand that, but as I get older, I think I get a little wiser and while they have been competitive and rarely have a losing record... it's been 10 years of frustrating seasons. 10 years of questioning why the defense always has the same issues. Shanahan tried many different ideas and I enjoyed it... I still think he's a great coach, but there comes a time when you have to part ways. The Broncos are far from being in dire straits because of this, if they do it smart with the GM and HC hirings... the team can still be a contender for the division in 2009. The division is weak and in the NFL, things can turn around fast. Some Denver fans need to have their 48 hour (maybe longer) mourning and then sit back and realize... while the Shanahan era was greatness, he's not the only guy that has the ability to coach this team well and get back into the playoffs. |
