Yeah, you never know though...

During the whole Favre saga this offseason...you had Mort and Clayton and all of the talking heads "guaranteeing" this and that...I heard several sound bites of these guys guaranteeing he'd stay retired...

If Cowher gets offered everything he wants and his family gives him the thumbs up, he'll be back...I don't listen to these talking heads...they can steer you in the right direction but guarantees mean nothing.

My bet is that Broncos go after a successful D coordinator like Titans Schwartz while leaving the offense to OC's Rick Dennison and Bates. Just a feeling but Bowlen has been embarrassed by this D one too many times and will be looking for a change more on that side of the ball.

I'm fine with a defensive focus, obviously... I don't need the next coach in Denver to be a big name at all. I just want them to be smart about it.

The Broncos have a nice young foundation on offense and solid pieces on both sides, but the defense really needs focus.

I can't think of anything solid on that defense other than an aging Champ Bailey...but maybe I didn't pay enough attention to Denver this year.

There's several young guys with nice promise and who knows... if a defensive minded coach comes in with the right scheme, guys like Thomas, Crowder and Moss may actually lose bust status. Do they really suck or is it Shanahan's inability over the last decade to build defense. There has been zero consistency with the defensive staff and schemes.

sparkky 12-30-2008 05:48 PM

I could live with Shanny here. coming here would be just another slap in crazy Al's face. LOL

jettio 12-30-2008 05:53 PM

I think Shanny wants some time off and Bowlen and Shanny agree that the gig is up in Bronco-land, and Bowlen firing him is a favor that ensures Shanny a paycheck during his vacation whether it be for a year, two or three.

I think the chances of this being less than amicable or Shanny coaching anywhere else in 2009 or even 2010 are very remote.

It got pretty crazy when you guys basically traded for the entire crappy Browns line. That's a move that looks just as crazy in hindsight as it did at the time.

Hammock Parties 12-30-2008 06:06 PM

You guys are free. Finally.

http://www.orangemane.com/BB/showthread.php?t=75565

It was becoming dangerous. Shanahan had a grip on Denver like no one. You all wanted to believe he could return the Broncos to glory, but he kept falling so horribly short time after time. And yet some of you continued to believe.

Embarrassing playoff blowouts. One non-playoff season. Two non-playoff seasons. Finally, three non-playoff season. And yet some of you STILL wanted to believe.

Shanahan had too much power. Absolute power corrupts absolutely and Shanahan's failings on the defense side of the bail, his absolute inability to hire the right defensive coordinator, his pathetic attempts at selecting defensive players, were HOLDING YOUR FRANCHISE BACK. He wasn't going to let go of that go of that power.

Bowlen did what had to be done.

And now you are free.

It is ironic that Carl Peterson and Mike Shanahan both were ousted from the franchises they were holding back for the last ten years in 2008.

Now we are free.

FREE AT LAST!

Breathe the free air my friends.

I find I'm so excited, I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it's the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend, and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.

I'm sure they probably feel directionless at this point though. The last time any of their fans went through a coaching search Bill Clinton was wrapping up his 2nd year as president.

Of course, the last time we hired a GM Ronald Reagan was president, so we don't have much room to talk either.

SHANAHAN HAS SOMETHING UP HIS SLEEVE?

Posted by Mike Florio on December 30, 2008, 7:51 p.m. EST
The immediate speculation in some league circles when word broke of the termination of long-time Broncos coach Mike Shanahan is that Shanahan has something else cooking, and that he forced his firing by refusing to agree to changes that owner Pat Bowlen wants to make.
According to Jeff Legwold of the Rocky Mountain News, part of that speculation is right on the money.
Per Legwold, Shanahan was fired because he refused to fire defensive coordinator Bob Slowik, whose unit surrendered 52 points in a Week Seventeen loss to the Chargers.
Said Bowlen, in a release issued by the team: “After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos. This is certainly a difficult decision, but one that I feel must be made and which will ultimately be in the best interests of all concerned.
“I appreciate the 21 years that Mike Shanahan has given to the organization as an assistant and head coach, and the two Super Bowl wins in that time. His contributions hold a special place in Broncos history.”
So if Shanahan wanted to get out of town because he has something else cooking, what might it be?
Believe it or not, there’s speculation that Shanahan is trying to position himself for the Chargers job.
What’s that, you say? The Chargers are in the playoffs and they’ve made it clear that Norv Turner is coming back as head coach?
That was our reaction, too. But a highly-placed league source suspects that something is happening with Shanahan and San Diego.
In our book, it’s almost as unlikely as Shanahan coaching the Raiders. But we’ll continue to keep our eyes peeled on this one

tk13 12-30-2008 07:43 PM

Yeah, don't know about that. If AJ Smith can't handle Marty's desire for control, you'd think he'll have a real hard time with Shanahan.

Please. We know you want to get rid of Mike Shanahan, so go ahead and get it out of your system now. Pretty soon, though, it's going to be clear that Shanahan is gone, and the focus will no longer be on whether Shanahan should be here or not, but what happens next.

So get it out now, but please - when that focus shifts to reality, lets keep the discussion on the moves the Broncos are making, and not the man, and have a productive offseason of discussion.

I agree with Taco, this is a huge error by Bowlen. Bowlen is a ****ing moron. Yeah, the season ended badly, it was very painful, but we also had to go through a ****load of injuries. Mike laid a great foundation for us. We were on the rise. He added an awesome array of young offensive talent. We're all pissed at his chokejob, but that doesn't justify this. He has flaws, but they were outweighed by his tremendous strengths.

I am so disappointed in Bowlen. And if he picks Cowher I'll be even more pissed. Cowher is STUPID. He's dumb. He's lacks intellect. He's a pure motivator, which is not bad for our team, but he lacks actual coaching ability. He needs to surround himself with coaches to succeed. I would truly hate Cowher.

I want Shanahan. Even a bloodied and humbled Shanahan. Because its he who has grown as a leader, who has improved as a drafter, who has become more responsible a spender and has laid a super foundation on offense. This smacks of childlike petulance on Bowlen's part. If Pat choked on his mink coat I probably wouldn't mind a whole lot. This will be a setback for the team. There's no one out there right now better than him as an actual football coach (by out there, I mean on the market, and on the whole, I think only Belichick exceeds him in purely football terms). This was totally unnecessary. This IS extremely harmful.

This is extremely stupid. **** you, Bowlen. I hope you get assraped by someone with a 15 inch dick. And AIDS.

Mike worked to get better. He started listening to others. He began drafting well. He was turning it around. NO ONE expected anything of us this year and he outdid all the expectations until we collapsed at the end.

This is the darkest day in my 17 year love affair with this team. I'm very offended by this. **** you, Bowlen. **** you.

I don't think you'll have long-term stability for quite a while, which is discomforting. But for the franchise as a whole, I think it's a good thing overall.

Just go to sleep feeling safe that Pat Bowlen isn't Clark Hunt and that unfortunately for Chiefs fans, Denver is a more attractive destination than Cleveland, Detroit and Kansas City.

And regardless, Denver is a more attractive "destination".

Not job, or fans, or city.

Destination.

A "destination"? yes.

"Attractive"? Meh.

Total post-war, nuclear city; NO mojo. Not to mention the fact that they can't cook, fight, or **** to save their asses.

Mountain people are ****ing tard's, and I would know; I currently live amongst them.

Are you really going to grasp at straws?

You said Clark Hunt didn't give a shit about football.

He had the window open in his suite against the Dolphins.

Carl's gone, Herm's following, here comes the cavalry. Led by Clark Hunt.

You were wrong.

Here is what Shanahan has done in the 10 years without Elway and TD.

I can dream cant i?

I haven't logged on to the Mane just because I don't have time for the insanity...

I can see both sides to fan reaction, but some folks are just too scared (or irrational) to think that maybe, just maybe... there is another coach that could come in and do well. Broncos' fans have become spoiled a bit, we've become used to 'competing' each year, whether it was real or not... Denver rarely had a losing record and they always seemed to be in the hunt for the divisional title.

That's not to suggest they were annual threats to win the SB, they were not... but, it's been a while since Denver fans have had to suffer through seasons like those of KC, DET, CLE, etc. Know what I mean?

Even prior to Shanahan, the Broncos under Reeves were always competitive.

Many fans see Shanahan as the only guy that can coach this team and I understand that, but as I get older, I think I get a little wiser and while they have been competitive and rarely have a losing record... it's been 10 years of frustrating seasons.

10 years of questioning why the defense always has the same issues. Shanahan tried many different ideas and I enjoyed it... I still think he's a great coach, but there comes a time when you have to part ways.

The Broncos are far from being in dire straits because of this, if they do it smart with the GM and HC hirings... the team can still be a contender for the division in 2009. The division is weak and in the NFL, things can turn around fast.

Some Denver fans need to have their 48 hour (maybe longer) mourning and then sit back and realize... while the Shanahan era was greatness, he's not the only guy that has the ability to coach this team well and get back into the playoffs.

they're called True Fans

harder to kill than rats

it's been said before, but you're the 90's Chiefs...lots of wins...lots of meaningless wins and no real shot at a championship...True Fans love it

This is a pretty good article... I agree with it.

I think the chances of this being less than amicable or Shanny coaching anywhere else in 2009 or even 2010 are very remote.

I agree, didn't he just build a 10 million dollar home in Colorado?

And now, a message from our sponsor:

Do you suffer from VES(Vermeil Era Syndrome)?

Did you come of age as Chiefs fan, and/or decide for whatever autistic reason that the era which was but a pale ghost of Marty Schottenheimer was somehow the Greatest Thing since Dawson, Bell, Taylor, and Lanier? We're you never taught the rock-solid, and stone-cold fact that Defenses win Football Games?
Does the thought of watching a mouth-breathing, 30-something Quarterback throw lame-assed passes to lame-assed receivers excite you more than Derrick Thomas and Neil Smith getting in John Elway's grill all day?

If so, we can't help. In fact, we don't want to help you.

We at the DCS Institute For Pulling Your Head Out Of Your Ass realize and acknowledge the Truth:
You are utterly ****ing hopeless. It is our sincerest desire that you convert to Chargerism post-haste, spend the rest of your hopefully short life getting pelted with foriegn objects from the Black Hole, and die sooner rather than later.
