Right. When he talked to Schefter yesterday, which he almost certainly did, he either told him the truth, or lied to him on orders from Pioli.

Perhaps. Nothing official has come out yet, and right now it's Schefter's sources against Mort's sources.

I am starting to have my doubts

I just love it that the Chiefs are causing a fight.

talastan 01-23-2009 05:55 PM

With the SB right around the corner what are the chances we'll even hear anything about our new HC hiring till after the big game? Doesn't the NFL have a rule against non SB related announcements within a certain timeframe of the game? Just curious.....

Jerm 01-23-2009 05:56 PM

Schefter said that his sources aren't DIRECTLY INVOLVED, they're on the periphery.

BIG difference.

Well, Schefter was acting like it was a joke to even consider the possibility, and it looks like it's more than just a possibility. Shanahan pretty much clowned him.

Nightfyre 01-23-2009 05:57 PM

Schefter is backtracking? lol. This is entirely confusing. I love it.

That's not what he said yesterday. He implied that he had just talked to Shanahan by dropping the nugget that Shanahan had just got done with his morning workout on the tread mill.

BigRock 01-23-2009 05:58 PM

A league source said that Hunt has focused on Shanahan after hiring Scott Pioli as the team's general manager. The source said Hunt did research on the last 19 coaches who have been hired in the NFL and determined their average salary to range between $2 million and $3 million, which would be an acceptable proposal by the NFL Management Council. Broncos owner Pat Bowlen would be obligated to pay the balance of Shanahan's three-year contract at approximately $6.5 million per year.
That would be funny.

Yea, because Mr. No name gets all the good scoops, that is if you don't pay attention to what that clown actually says. Athan knows less than most average fans and it shows. To pretend he does, makes you foolhardy.

I don't get the money thing. I think Bowlen would have still paid Shanahan rather than see him go to the Chiefs. I think the Chiefs are going to back load the hell out of the contract if they can get away that, so Shanahan effectively gets two paychecks and doesn't work for "free".

Hammock Parties 01-23-2009 06:03 PM

Shanahan is ours.

Pioli didn't wait all this time to can Herm Edwards for no reason. He waited all this time because he wasn't sure he could get Shanahan. Now that Herm has been fired, and news is leaking all over the place that we're "targeting" Shanahan (which I've been aware of for weeks now), it's pretty clear:

Mike Shanahan, Head Coach, Kansas City Chiefs

Bowlen has to pay Shanny regardless unless he signs a new contract worth the value of his old one. It's just funny that Clark would be like "OK, here's basically the minimum we could pay him and still get it approved" so that Bowlen is still on the hook for a lot.

If Shanahan signed such a contract, it's even funnier.

Unless I am mistaken, Bowlen is only on the hook for the difference. I think Clark will make that difference as big as possible, then when his contract expires from Denver, he'll jack it up. Else why would the Rat work? (Yes, I know that technically Shahanan is supposed to look, but I doubt Bowlen would take him to court.)

He was just non committal on anything. He said he liked the idea of having Pioli as the GM because of NE's record. He can't speculate what Pioli is going to do. He seems to want to be part of a winning organization if it can be in the next 3 years because he was coming close to the end of his career.

Supposedly in their private forum.

I will say that 3 weeks ago, Clayton sent me a PM saying that Nick was told that Shanahan had a conversation or two with the Chiefs.

Clayton also PM'd me several weeks before the story broke, what was going on with LJ. He hit the nail on the head.

So, give them some credit, they've been right before.

And considering there has been some smoke from other sources, I'd say this thing has some legs.

blaise 01-23-2009 06:16 PM

I think the deal may be almost done but the Chiefs need to keep it down because they need to interview a minority candidate to satisfy the Rooney Rule. If they're openly in talks with Shanahan and have a preliminary agreement they're not even going to get guys go come in for interviews because it would be a farce.
