Yeah they made their FT's and fed the ball inside and controlled the glass the 2nd half, all key to winning on the road.

uggh what an ugly game by our boys in the first half, luckily we were playing nebraska or we would have lost that one.

It's a good testament to the gall of our young guys, fighting through the adversity of being down 13 in the other teams house.

Yes, they weren't affected much by the crowd agaisnt Iowa State, but tonight was certainly different. It better not happen agaisnt Baylor.

ROFL

Seriously though that game was scary. On to the next.

Bearcat 01-28-2009 10:47 PM

Nebraska really does that to everyone... I expected that sort of game on the Jayhawks' offensive end, it was just the 34 points given up in the first half that surprised me. Having gone to the OSU game in Lincoln on Saturday, and seeing them on a few other occasions, I knew they would be a pain the ass.

It was probably a good learning experience for Aldrich, who probably hasn't seen that sort of defense this year, but at least he got a few looks in the second half. If Nebraska had hit their 3s, the Jayhawks would have been screwed, but that's Husker basketball.

On a side note, it's funny reading through this thread, like the Jayhawks were getting screwed by the refs... having come from the game where the Husker fans were bitching about everything. If anything, I thought it was a little slanted towards the Jayhawks, but not by much.

Not the best seats in the house, but I liked the view...

At the end they favored the Jayhawks, IMO, but most of the Nebraska fans (and maybe you) didn't see the replay we did of the Collins layup attempt with 30 seconds left. Looked like a block at first glance (and it was a clean block), but Collins was hit on the head as he was going up, and they called that.

KC_Connection 01-28-2009 10:53 PM

And yeah, 34 points is actually a relatively low total considering the 13 turnovers KU had in the first half.

Yeah, they were all over that one, but the replay in the arena was from the floor under the basket, which didn't show anything one way or the other. The guy I got the ticket from is pretty objective, so I tended to agree with him when he would call a 'Jayhawk call'... a blocking foul that should have been a charge in the first half, and one or two questionable calls under the basket.

It's hilarious, because Saturday the Cowboys apparently brought their refs, and tonight the Jayhawks brought their own.... Nebraska can't get a break. ;)

What was with the delay after the pile up towards mid-court? Were they checking to see if someone threw a punch? Someone said they saw a Jayhawk come off the bench, and everyone was screaming for a technical foul.

Oh, and another point I wanted to make before.... I think it was halfway through the second half when the Jayhawks had 19 turnovers, and maybe not even that; and when I looked at a minute to go they had 20 (which I think was an Aldrich turnover on the baseline). Huge.

True, but giving up 34 to Nebraska is like giving up 50 to a real offense. They were definitely fortunate that it wasn't worse going into halftime.

Yeah, I figured they wouldn't have seen that. What did he think of the Cookie Miller blocking foul late in the game? I thought it was clearly a foul, but the Nebraska fans really didn't like it.

They were looking for a punch. And KU wanted a technical foul on Miller for being an idiot and starting all that.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, we both thought it was a foul, and it looked like it was on the replay. The more obnoxious fans around us really didn't like some of the blocking fouls, even though most of them were obvious.

That's what I didn't get... the Jayhawks ended up on the ball, and if anything it looked like it was the Huskers' aggression that caused the problem, yet fans throughout the entire arena were going apeshit for a technical, like I was the only one who missed it.

They didn't have much inside presence even with Maric last year, and now they have even less. I figured it would be Aldrich's game on both ends of the court, but he was out of position on defense so much in the first half, and probably isn't used to having so many ankle-biters flying around when they're on offense.

I felt it was an obvious blocking foul. Miller wasn't straight up at all when he did it, was still shuffling his feet a bit, and reached his arms up into Taylor's chest.

Little was visibly pissed, and got up ready to charge at the little guy for being all over him like that. That really didn't deserve a technical, though.

Yeah, the replay showed his feet were still moving. After the replay, a Husker fan behind us something along the lines of "damn, it's one thing to be passionate, but he clearly wasn't set".

I wasn't sure what to expect from Aldrich on offense, because my friend said they would have at least two guys on him all night and that he wouldn't have any time to put the ball down or move around under the basket. His defense in the first half surprised me, but he seemed to adjust and not wander nearly as much in the second half.

They played through it better than expected. Nebraska really needed the win, so I didn't have a good feeling about it... but they have to play a near perfect game against most teams because of their inept offense.

Bearcat 01-29-2009 12:02 AM

Probably the hardest call for a ref to make is a charge or block. On a few of those, the Jayhawk player was moving to the side to avoid the charge and the Nebraska player would try to move his direction. Most of those were correct. I know I have seen many a game where the refs (incorrectly) give the charge in that scenario.

I don't know what they were bitching about. Cookie Miller was being a punk there. The ESPN guys (Gottleib, I think) even said as much. No punches were thrown but if there were to be any kind of technical foul call, it would have been on the midget.
