You dont get a pass unless you are in qualifying position when you crash. Not sure where the canadian was, but if he wasn't top 2 when he went down, he's screwed. Thats one of the risks of hanging out in the back like Ohno's been doing. If you arent in the top 2 or 3, you better not go down.

I think that only happens in the heats...not sure, though.

I thought he was in second at the time, guess not.

It might also be a quarter-only thing too. If you are in the lead in the medal race and go down, they dont hand you a gold. I think they only want 6 in the final no matter what.

kstater 02-13-2010 08:46 PM

USA has 1/3 of the Finals.

alnorth 02-13-2010 08:47 PM

That other american cut that a little close at the end. He got a bit lazy at the finish line and an italian snuck up and almost stole his spot away.

I think they have the option of re-racing without the DQ'd guy in that case, though it's not a strict rule.

KC_Connection 02-13-2010 08:50 PM

They advanced that Canadian btw, kstater, you were right.

Now I still have someone to cheer for in addition to Ohno.

Horrible camera angles for the luge.

Do the boblseds run the same track?

alnorth 02-13-2010 09:30 PM

Did we really just watch a full race just to determine 8th place? Really IOC, you think its necessary?

It was like Pee Wee League Soccer. "There are no losers." LOL "Congratulations! You won the race! You're in last place!" I'd be embarrassed to skate in it.

kstater 02-13-2010 09:37 PM

The Koreans took themselves out USA 2-3 after Ohno ****ed up earlier.

KC_Connection 02-13-2010 09:38 PM

LMAO hahaha.

That Korean favorite pulled it out....but they almost had a podium finish. Wow.

KC_Connection 02-13-2010 09:39 PM

It could have been all 3 of those Koreans knocked out...the front guy almost got pushed down.

JD10367 02-13-2010 09:40 PM

Can you picture the Korean leader? "Oh mah Gawd! Re got all tree spots!!! Re gonna rin all tree meda... NOOO! NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! YOU FAKKHAAASSS!!!! I'M GONNA KILL YOU!!! YOU BETTER DEFECT YOU BAHSTAAAAAAAHDS!!!!" ROFL ROFL ROFL

kstater 02-13-2010 09:42 PM

I hope those Koreans are from the south, if they're from the North, they might be dead soon.

alnorth 02-13-2010 09:42 PM

That was beautiful.

Korea had 1-2-3 locked up, guaranteed podium sweep, but the Korean in 3rd got greedy, made a bad pass to try to get silver, took them both out, damn near took out the leader too, USA gladly takes the gift-wrapped silver and bronze.

JD10367 02-13-2010 09:44 PM

Since we don't have a Korean Leader Facepalm, maybe he had one of these two expressions while watching that finish. LMAO

Oh, good point. I'm not sure if they're from the North or South. I guess if they're from the South they won't get shot; they'll just be working in a Kia or Hyundai plant, LOL.

No kidding. If this is north korea, he had better go to the Canadian government and ask for political asylum.

kstater 02-13-2010 09:47 PM

Ouch, had a hell of a run prior to that.

Hell, I could've moguled like that, LOL... and I've never tried. Gotta suck to screw the pooch on international TV, especially if you're from Japan. They don't tolerate failure well.

JD10367 02-13-2010 09:48 PM

Cute though, plucky too. It'd be hard to smile after that.

JD10367 02-13-2010 09:49 PM

I guess the announcers said the weather is making the upper portion fast but the jumps difficult, 'cause that one almost lost it too.

I'm guessing she wasnt anywhere close to being a favorite to medal, so she tried to pull out a crazy trick but couldn't stick it. Probably more of a "welp, I tried!" smile.

kstater 02-13-2010 09:58 PM

Heck of a run.

kstater 02-13-2010 10:01 PM

23.9 would be 8th based on prelims.

kstater 02-13-2010 10:04 PM

That might be enough for a medal.

kstater 02-13-2010 10:19 PM

I think the American had a better run. It'll be close.

KC_Connection 02-13-2010 10:19 PM

Could be a Golden run....comes down to the final American.

kstater 02-13-2010 10:21 PM

Fuggin domination

KC_Connection 02-13-2010 10:24 PM

Silver it is....Canadians will have to wait.

JD10367 02-13-2010 10:25 PM

So, that's a 2nd and 3rd in 1500m speed skating (kthxbye Korea) and a 1st and 3rd in moguls. Not bad. Four medals on day one.

KC_Connection 02-13-2010 10:25 PM

Supposedly she choked in 2006....a pretty good story then.

alnorth 02-13-2010 10:34 PM

ski cross? huh. never heard of it, ought to be interesting.

alnorth 02-13-2010 10:37 PM

We have a final in women's 3000m short track relay, I guess NBC will show it later.

Spoiler alert: Korea gold, USA silver, Netherlands bronze

007 02-13-2010 10:37 PM

That was a crappy final in the short track. Glad the Koreans wiped themselves out but what crappy way to take a silver.

I think it would be so much fun, if they could guarantee the not dying thing. As it is, I'm happy to watch others.

Best way to watch the Olympics. DVR it and do something else for the 1st 45 mins. Come back and watch while it tapes. The amount of commercials is staggering. 45 mins. worth last night. By the time you skip thru them all, the timing is just about right. You're watching live the last 5 mins. Sweet.

A good example of why I like my "HDTV on the left, tube TV on the right" setup. The Olympics will be closed-captioned silent fodder on the HD for two weeks, while we watch TiVo on the tube set.

45 minutes of commercials over almost 4 hours isn't bad at all.

Disagree. Luge and bobsled are my least favorite just because it's about impossible for a layman to really know who is doing well aside from watching the clock. They all look almost exactly the same aside from a different outfit, and you can't ever see them for more than 2 continuous seconds on the way down.

Don't get me wrong - I know there's a lot of skill involved in it. I just don't think it's all that entertaining as a spectator sport.

Pretty much this. The only reason I ever have to watch is to see if there's a crash because the absolute greatest in the field looks no different than the guy who finishes dead last, assuming they dont crash.
