Hey, nobody calls me dumber than Dirk and gets away with it!

Meet me at the airport!

I'll let you know which one.

We should probably go with a neutral airport, someplace where neither of us has friends or relatives. And let's make sure there's a bar.

The potato was originally from Peru where the local inhabitants laid them out on the cliffs. There, the ocean breezes, sunshine, and cool weather would, essentially, freeze dry the little spuds. As a result, they attained the exact carbohydrate to protein ratio necessary for human survival.

Once taken to Europe, of course, they were responsible for the industrial revolution since, for the first time, persons didn't have to spend all their time acquiring food. The resultant "spare time" provided a work force that allowed the industrial revolution to take place.

Therefore, the lowly spud is directly responsible for putting a man on the moon. Plus, you can make little people out of them with toothpicks.

Have you ever seen that show "Connections" with the little English guy who shows how some primitive development leads to a series of developments that result in a modern technological accomplishment of amazing proportions?

No, I haven't, Mr. patteeu. Sounds interesting though. I've always been intrigued by the seemingly unrelated and minor, but still vital events that lead to significant advances in civilization.

I was once able to trace the advent of refrigerated pharmaceutical transportation to a troubling rash on Anne Boleyn's left, inner thigh.

I was in Pittsburgh's airport a while back and it's pretty nice. I would recommend that you go there to fight.

Do they have comfortable chairs? And where'd this "fight" stuff come from? I thought he was inviting me to have a drink and discuss our issues like people who don't shoot our refrigerators.

If I go hunting and accidentally shoot one of my friends, will you post a prayer thread for me?

Pat, how's Pittsburgh for you? I might have some free time coming up at the end of the month. The 25th looks like a good day. Should we fight first or drink first? Or both? I think you should buy the first round since you started it.

RJ 03-03-2010 12:18 PM

By the way, I spoke with my doctor - err, trainer - and he says I need to limit any fighting to less than 10 seconds.

Pittsburgh seemed nice enough from what I saw of it in "My So-Called Life". I'll buy the first round, but I hope we can clear up this confusion before we get to the fighting part. I meant to say you were dumber than dirt, not dirk. That's not nearly as bad as it came across with the typo.

FAX 03-03-2010 12:27 PM

My money's on the neo-con.

Which one of you is that?

There are always gray areas. Pat's Cheney thread was one of them. The typical response for those is to let them ride for a while, then move them over when they start getting out of hand. That's basically the same way that "media center" or "pictures" threads are handled. They live in the Lounge for a while, but eventually get moved over when appropriate. That practice predates me by a long time.

I guess I don't really understand what the debate is about.

AFAICS, it's about fraz jonesing for another installment of nekkid wrassle w/patty.

Dirt? Oh, well that's not so bad! I'm glad we cleared that up, but you can still buy the first round.

What if it's not a thread at all and turns out to be a piece of string?

What then?

NFL: Socialism makes everyone rich
March 7, 2010

E-mail|Print|Reprints|Yahoo! Buzz|ShareThis Text size – +
The Tea Partiers are right. There is socialism in the United States. It’s called the National Football League. In fact, this fantastically successful experiment in corporate socialism is now at risk of being ruined by owners and players who are threatening to behave as rational market actors.

The league’s business practices contradict the tenets of a free market. With its salary cap and salary floor that oblige all 32 franchises to spend the same amount on players each year, the NFL effectively prohibits any team from gaining an investment advantage over its competitors.

A draft order that bestows the highest picks on the weakest teams punishes winners and rewards losers. And at the root of all this leveling is the owners’ collectivist arrangement to divvy up TV revenue equally among themselves.

But now the owners are complaining that a salary cap based on the players receiving nearly 60 percent of total gross revenue has become an unbearable burden for some franchises. And players don’t want to change the formula if they can’t see the owners’ books. So this year is already uncapped and next year could bring a lockout. Labor and management are making an omelet out of a golden egg and threatening to kill the goose that laid it. Karl Marx could explain this; it’s definitely not in the playbook of either Ron Paul or Sarah Palin.

I thought so too. The topic is interesting from both a football and an economic angle, though.

Yes, it does fit a football message board better than most articles about socialism. I'll give it that.
