So, 30 coaches have won a superbowl in NFL history out of how many? What are the odds there, Clay?

I don't have a problem with somebody sticking to their guns but when their guns are on the ocean floor, then maybe its time to let those guns sink alone. I'm about 50% convinced he's trolling me though. I don't think he's brilliant but there's no way he's this dense.

FYI, there's no agenda. I'm legitimately terrified of Romeo as our next head coach. Worst case scenario, he actually wins a few games with the talent we have in place, McDaniels is the OC, Romeo retires in 3-4 years and McDaniels becomes the new HC.

Scares the shit out of me.

This. Most probably lose any drive to coach as they get older. But as long as a candidate is capable of physically doing the job and has the drive I really don't see where age makes a hell of alot of difference.

Roughly... you have 44 SuperBowls. 33 superbowl winners so 11 winners are multiples like Noll, Landry, Walsh, and BB. Guessing there are a comparable number of multiple losers like Levy. So figure 66-70 total SuperBowl coaches.

So, take that 33 out of the 448 head coaches who have ever coached in the nfl, and you come out with a worse percentage than Clay's 3/27 ratio.

I don't think you've come to realize that the NFL is about talent, execution, and a whole lot of luck. We could bring Belechick to KC tomorrow and not win a SuperBowl. Sometimes good coaches fail. Sometimes bad coaches get very lucky. It doesn't have jack to do with age, hair-style, color, pedigree, or even coaching tree.

Now, I'm not downplaying the role of head coach because we all know about having morons wearing that hat. But the head coach isn't going to be the sole catalyst for taking the Chiefs to the promised land.

Close.. 28 coaches have won a superbowl, an additional 20 have gone but never won.

I may be off by 1 or 2 on the 20 figure, but it's close.

It would seem coaches over 63 aren't lucky.

Because Marv Levy's age made Scott Norwood miss that kick. He just couldn't put it through the uprights because of his ancient coach.

|Zach| 12-20-2011 04:56 AM

I would be fine with it.

Even if Norwood makes it, you're still only looking at 4 coaches in 40+ years.

I'm sure the stars will align for our franchise in the next four years under Romeo, though.

Okay, let's play it your way then. Since your probability stick goes both ways then the Chiefs franchise has won one out of 44 SuperBowls. Wouldn't that mean, using your logic, that any coach KC hired would be unable to win a SuperBowl? I mean, since you're using statistics and history to determine the age window of our next head coach? I'd like to figure out your exact algorithm... What should be the ideal age, Clay?

Have there been any red-headed SuperBowl winning coaches? We need to figure these important factors out in advance before we submit our approved candidate list to Clark.

No. Because each Chiefs team is different, with it's own set of independent variables.

For instance, one of those variables - we keep hiring shitty head coaches. We have now had 5 head coaches in 13 years. So we should definitely seek to continue this trend with another short-term hire.

Rausch 12-20-2011 05:38 AM

If you don't want Romeo as HC that's fine.

There are good arguments to be made there. Personally, I'm worried our D will take a step back.

But to make excuses like age is BS.

"It can't be done because it's never been done."

That's not a good reason to avoid something - it's the reason to do it...

I honestly can't believe I'm hearing this reasoning after all the debates over drafting first round QBs on here in the last 5 years.

It's early (or late for some of us) but I'm not sure I follow.

I don't think we can't draft a QB just because we haven't.

I don't think it's impossible for Pioli to change his MO and trade up.

I don't think it's impossible for a team that hasn't won a playoff game in 2 decades to win one.

LMAO. Each 64 year old head coach is different, with his own set of independent variables.

I'd argue they are less different than a team comprised of many individuals.

Hammock Parties 12-20-2011 05:55 AM

Here is a good comparison:

Head coaches 60 and over who won Super Bowls: 3 (Ewbank, Vermeil, Coughlin)

Quarterbacks 35 and over who won Super Bowls: 4 (Elway, Plunkett, Staubach, Unitas)

Maybe we could trade for Manning and hire Romeo, though. Let's spit in fate's eye.

I'd argue Romeo, DV, and Marv Levy are about as different as HC's get.

I always thought Marv would flop out with a heart attack on the sidelines.

What are the odds of drafting a top 10 QB and him winning a SB?

What are the odds of getting married and not getting divorced?

What are the odds of having a child without any type of abnormality?

There are no guarantees in life...

This is amusing. LMAO

Crennel used The Gladiator to help get his team ready for this game. He'd seen it last weekend in the hotel, before the Chiefs played the Jets, and he took some Russell Crowe into the Saturday night team meeting with him. "I told the team that, like the gladiator, we were going to play a great team in Green Bay, and no matter what comes out of these gates, we've got to stay together,'' Crennel said. "We did that. I told them after the game, 'Everyone expected us to die with honor today. But we're not ready to die.' ''

At face value, your argument has merit.

When one realizes that you're against Romeo Crennel because you're FOR Jeff Fisher, it yanks quite a bit of legitimacy from your argument.

History suggests that NEITHER Romeo nor Fisher would win a Super Bowl with the Chiefs. You can't have it both ways.

Coogs 12-20-2011 10:22 AM

I know this probably won't be popular, but if we play the next 2 weeks like we played Sunday against the Pack, I'm not sure if I would make any changes to the coaching staff at all if they all want to stay. Both sides of the ball played very, very well. If we play well, and win them both, it does not matter to me if Denver or the Chargers wind up going to the playoffs, and we wind up outside looking in... that was lost earlier in the season.

BUT, if we show up Sunday and look like we did against the Jets, Dolphins, Lions, Bills, etc., all bets are off, and I would continue with the coaching search. Same thing if we look good Sunday against the Faid, then come out and let the Tebow's hang 300 yards rushig on us and literally run us out of town.

12 Super Bowls have been won by retreads. So I disagree.

It may have worked out differently here than Washington
he's not doing so hot for the Redskins
