I've been staying completely out of discussions like this among the mods for a while now, but I do have the ability to observe the proceedings a bit. From my perspective, the issue isn't that the rules are being changed all over the place; any changes have been made have really been incredibly minor.

Instead, the issue is that people like Thig or whatever his name is today like to see how much they can get away with. Contrary to the impression you get by reading threads like this, the current mods typically give people multiple warnings prior to a temp ban and multiple temp bans before it's made permanent. It's not like any of the mods have suddenly decided that posting 20 images in a single post is an instant permaban; it's a body of work that's being evaluated - not a single offence.

SNR can say whatever the hell he wants as far as I'm concerned. If you're going to be that sensitive this probably isn't the place for you.

Honestly....I think the mods are pretty calm when it comes to figuring out who should be banned and what is a bannable offense.

But the crux of the issue, IMO, is what I have bolded. I think there are a number of peoples names you could insert in there and it would be true. Around here there are some people who believe the rules never apply to them and then when they are slapped down they act astonished.

I agree with this and I think most every reasonable person does including Bug and SNR. I think what has happened here is Trivvers might have overstepped a n00b boundary and come on a little strong. I'm not prepared to make a specific rule about the lines of decency but yeah, raping somebody isn't really funny anywhere but on the nastiest of forums on the internet. While we all want some freedoms to be goofy and have fun, we don't want to be known as the site where comments about raping players wives is considered the norm. I don't have any expectations that this is going to be a church but it's like a bar. Our rule of thumb has always been since Aug 2000 that if you can't stand up and shout it in a bar without fear of getting your ass kicked you should probably avoid saying it here.

The screen informing them they are banned tells them for how long and displays any notes the mod may have chosen to leave for them.

I don't think that's any different than it has ever been. There are guidelines for behavior but we don't enforce every single rule. Generally if there is a complaint, we are kind of bound by our responsibility to at least address it. But there's not a single mod that gets off by banning regular members of this site.

Reported posts are taken seriously no matter who reports them or who is the "victim". The exception to that would be somebody who reports excessively, needlessly or somebody who is actively participating in a feud that would go away if they just stopped responding.
