Heath Ledger described the Joker as a "psychopathic, mass murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy". Nolan had wanted to work with Ledger on a number of projects in the past, but had been unable to do so. When Ledger saw Batman Begins, he realized a way to make the character work consistent with that film's tone, and Nolan agreed with his anarchic interpretation. To prepare for the role, Ledger lived alone in a hotel room for a month, formulating the character's posture, voice and psychology, and kept a diary, in which he recorded the Joker's thoughts and feelings to guide himself during his performance. While he initially found it difficult, Ledger was eventually able to generate a voice that did not sound like Jack Nicholson's take on the character in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman film.

"Batman vs. Superman" stars Ben Affleck as a brand new Batman, and like every other incarnation of the DC superhero, he'll be wearing a brand new suit. And according to self-professed superfan Kevin Smith, it's awesome.

The filmmaker and "Comic Book Men" star told KROQ personality Ralph Garmen during their weekly live podcast, "Hollywood Babble-On," that director Zack Snyder had shown him a picture of Affleck in costume backstage at a Q&A event over the weekend promoting the Blu-ray release of "Man of Steel."

"I saw the Batman costume. More than that, I saw a picture of him in the costume," Smith said. "Now I don't want to give anything away, because that's up to them and stuff, but I'm going to say this -- I instantly bear hugged him. You have not seen this costume, in a movie, on film before. And for a comic book fan, it was mind bending."

Blogs around the web have been speculating that the influence for the new costume design hails from Lee Bermejo's 2011 graphic novel "Batman: Noël," which is based on Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol."

Smith, who was commissioned by Warner Bros. in the mid '90s to write a "Superman" movie that never got made, did not address those rumors. He did, however, make sure to emphasize that Snyder and his producing team are not making the same mistake prominently featured on George Clooney's suit in "Batman & Robin."

"Everyone always does this "Matrix"-y/"X-Men" black thing," Smith said. "There wasn't a single nipple on this ****in' suit, man. It was fantastic."

Affleck has previously said that Snyder's "brilliant" approach to the character after the success of Christopher Nolan's critically-acclaimed "Dark Knight" trilogy is what made him sign on for the film.

"Zack had this incredible take on it," Affleck told Jimmy Fallon in September. "Obviously you can't do what Christian [Bale] did — those movies are awesome, amazing — so he wants to do something different, but still in keeping with that. So I thought, 'This is a brilliant way to do this, I really know how to hook into this.'"

Smith echoed Affleck's own excitement, and assured fans Snyder's approach would indeed be different.

"I'm already, obviously, a flag waiver for the movie, but the costume blew my mind," Smith added. "I'm so ****ing happy, I think everyone is going to be like, 'Holy shit.' It's its own thing. We haven't been down this path at all."

Well, if you look at the Man of Steel outfit, they pretty much did exactly that.

Of course Batman has, and has had many more variations.

If it were me, I'd just put a rubber Halloween bat on Ben's head coupled with a grey leotard, and have him run around screaming "BATTY-BATTY BOY"!

On Hollywood Babble-On this week, he let slip a reference that he ended up bleeping on edit. Sounded like someone's name, followed by -ian, ie, 'Zack's take on the suit had a distinctive [Baby Lee]-ian flair.'

Dunno who the reference was, and don't know enough about Batman's world to guess, but if anyone is so inclined there might be a clue there.

It probably is the gray and blue suit with a larger black symbol on the chest and more detail. I mean, Kevin Smith has always been an old school comic guy. The only suit I can think of that would make him flip shit would be a variation of the blue and grey suit. Not Adam West cheesy suit but an up to date version of it, maybe a combination of the Dark Knight Trilogy's detail with the color scheme of the old suit. Black is being done to death now in Hollywood, it would be time for a call back to Batman's earlier years. Seeing how Supes suit came out really dark compared to the bright blue and red he's used to wearing I'd say something similar is in order for Batman so expect a dark gray and dark blue. Just my .02.

Also the "art" that Snyder released recently was of a grey and blue suit as well even though the art was hideous.
