Have read some unkind things about the 7 series. In the past few weeks I recall it being listed somewhere on a worst used cars list and think consumer reports kind of hates it.

Too big for my tastes but the Challenger is really nice looking. Neighbor has an orange SRT that looks great.

You help me decide. Point me in the right direction. Give me the great info that puts me in the right car.......I'll send $50 to the charity of your choice.

Criteria:
I want to spend between $30k - $40K.
Automatic
Got some style
Have to be able to fit in the car comfortably
Prefer a coupe

Right now I'm thinking new Challenger, Nissan 370Z, Mustang etc. Son is telling me to look at used Mercedes, Lexus etc.

What ideas do you have?

Yes. Get 2015 Scion TC or 2015 Scion FRS. New models smoking make it fire. Style for the swagger of yours. Great comfort enjoy ride when fasting or slow movement but yes greatness is inside.

I just bought my wife a 2014 Challenger RT with 5.7 Hemi with 10,000 miles on it and all I have got to say is what a nice car. It is Billit in color and buying 1 year old it still has lots of warranty and we paid $24,495 with an interest rate of 2.24 I could not be happier.

The 750 was nice but it was huge, It was like driving a station wagon/bus. Just a real nice one. Fantastic handling and serious luxury interior but no way could I drive that huge thing on a daily commute.

I'll update the 335i experience later. Got some travel to book.

2015 2 series was too small for my tastes.

2014 BMW335i was one sweet ride. Best handling car I've ever driven, well besides the Lamborghini. The steering wheel responds to the slightest movement. You move that steering wheel, you'd better be wanting to turn the car that way. Very responsive to the drivers movements.

The turbo activation was on the floor and on the steering wheel.

Very quiet on the highway, The ride was very smooth. Took the bumps very well. The interior was full of leather. Didn't care for the wood trim but overall top notch.

The only problem I had was with the drivers seat. It has those seats that come out on sides that are suppose to secure you better in the seat. But, probably because of my big ass, their was more weight on the sides than the actual seat back. Just felt weird. Maybe its just those new seats and it just takes getting use to?

My friend told me the exact amount the dealership paid for the car at auction. It was a one owner lease. Has a total mechanical coverage through 2016. Transmission, engine and electrical through 100K miles.

They would make $3K on the deal. Only give me $4K on my Mustang.

Yes - okay - so where are you with all of this?

Simply Red 02-11-2015 09:07 PM

honestly BRC - I don't think they'll break in much - just due to the raw structure and shape of them and how they 'bucket'

Perhaps a used 5 is a better option. I mean - HOW uncomfortable are we talking? also - Did you try to adjust the contour?

Miles 02-11-2015 09:11 PM

Is the 2014 you are referring to that 2012 in the link?

Not THAT uncomfortable. Just didn't fit as well as the Mercedes or the BMW 750.

Simply Red 02-11-2015 09:24 PM

I don't really know where to go from here - perhaps the Challenger or Charger is better.. Comfort is pretty dang important. I mean there's a nice mercedes cls 63 amg near you - but it's 47 something g's.

Simply Red 02-11-2015 09:25 PM

That black sapphire metallic is a beautiful color though. Man.

Sport package comes with high bolster seats vs. standard which are more traditional. That looks like it has the better M Sport package which is as little better than the standard sport package as well as less common. Trying to recall what it involved over the sport package but at least the front and rear bumpers, and I think lower side panels (whatever those are called). Maybe exhaust or suspension tweaks but not sure.

In short, if the sport seats don't work for you its not your only option.

TrebMaxx 02-11-2015 09:27 PM

It took me awhile to get my 3 series seat just right by playing with the settings. At first is was like the seat just adjusted in too many ways but I finally hit it. I also like the feature to have my settings and my wife's settings saved and they adjust by who is driving the car.

Yeah, it's a pretty sweet ride (I've always thought wood trim in cars looked odd). I'm so used to wind noise in my car, it'll be a huge upgrade. I'm curious about the sport seats on longer road trips... I thought they were more comfortable than they look (for a twig), but only for ~15 minutes at a time. Carmax is a good second option for a trade in... I think you can walk in and get a 30 minute appraisal and offer that's good for a week.

yeah maybe the sport seats don't fit big dudes as well as the standard seats?

Miles 02-11-2015 09:45 PM

Did a quick look at BWM dealers in your area an found this for an example. The 335is was a late model add that fell between the 335i and M3. Harder to find since production was more limited but seems deprecitaion has put them about the same as a loaded 335i (and 335is are almost all loaded by default). Big difference include the dual clutch transmission out of the M3 (DCT has instant shifts and feels more like a manual except for the clutch/shifting part). Also has some extra power, exhaust sound and body kit.

Why is this still a thing in 2015? I don't get it.

Thats what caused me a little concern. They were fine on the trial ride. But what about the 35 minute drive back and forth each day?

The high bolsters are basically meant to hold you in place when cornering by hugging your sides. I have heard bigger dudes complain this doesn't exactly always work as planned for them. If you want to see regular seats as an example the 328s will be more likely to have them.

Yeah, I warmed up to it quite a bit after seeing it in person... there's an Estoril Blue I and II, with II being darker, so Google results are mixed with some pics (either Estoril I or in direct sunlight) that make it look really light. Hadn't ever debated a single car color so much, even though it was down to red or blue for me, since I've driven black or silver for the past ~16 years.

Metallic black is a little less of a pain in the ass for upkeep and will a little dirt still looks ok. Jet black is the ultimate pain in the ass and would avoid since it shows EVERY defect in the paint.

Here's a bad pic of the Challenger. They haven't even really processed the car into the lot yet.

The real DCT, a little more power are pretty damn nice adds plus the unique looks. Also has an overboost for when you stomp on it gives you lb-ft of torque for 7 sec. Seems like former model depreciation has hit these nicely for BRC.

Big plus to me at least is I prefer driving something a little unique and the 335is is not common at all.

Nice looking car. Though with those I'd think the bigger engine options would be needed to power something that heavy to actually feel like a muscle car. Trying to recall what the one just below the SRT8 was called that gives you the performance but not quite as pricy.

0-60 in 6 seconds. The 335 I drove today was 4.5 seconds.

Tuned a bit from BMW already. For us mortals that is good enough and keeps the warranty working.

For me at least I have found on a daily drive basis that a great balance of sport handling/ride (basically the chassis) is what I think I may enjoy most combined with short burst from the throttle and making the worst of MPG. Where something like a 3/4 series coupe tends to shine even though it is also very quick in a straight line.

I imagine I'll spend weeks in the different drive modes figuring out if they make a difference, either on their own or in the way I drive. Based on stuff posted online, I think at worst I'll get the same ~21mpg with the 235 than I get now, but should actually see a ~3mpg improvement, which would be fantastic.

The 5.7 Hemi is plenty for me, just south of 400 hp and I have seen as high as 28 mpg actual

Have you tested out a Lexus RC 350 yet?

Also, what about a Cadillac ATS with the 3.6L V6?

My father-in-law is selling his 2005 Mustang GT that he has modified with after-market rims, lowered and magnaflow exhaust among other things I probably don't know about. He's done car shows in a few states with it. Always garaged and only driven in the summers up in Montana. Figured I'd drop this here since the OP had same year Stang.

A whopping 14,000 miles!!!!!!!!! She's a beauty. Looking to get around $18k out of it.

It's going to cost me $175 a month in insurance to get the 8 cylinder. And I'm not really that interested in going fast. Just get up on the on ramp and around big ass tractor trailers.

What do you think Hemi-Ed? I trust your opinion. In 2015, is the Challenger the best of the retro muscle cars?

there are ways around the warranty thing - and that (honestly in my experience ) is somewhat a myth. It's never happened to me and the 335 had that Cobb work on it - hell I even had a small Cobb decal. Additionally - if he elected to go JB4 - the shop who handles the install will (generally) offer a removal+ reassembly for about an hour of labor - or BRC could learn how to do it and then go on and do it himself. It's not too hard to do.

Simply Red 02-12-2015 08:32 PM

I'd imagine the 335 will be gone after this weekend. Good chance I mean.

With that said Miles - Again I'm only speaking of my experiences - they (BMW) certainly have the right to void the warranty. But if you have a nice Service Center - they'll cut you a break - OR simply find a German car service center that ALSO offer tunes - they'll be cool about it - I'd bet cash money on that. They know how it b. It's ruff out here on the street. They ain't even know! Naw mean? Sorry I don't know where he came from just now.

Simply Red 02-12-2015 08:39 PM

You wind up buying a 335 + get it tuned - I'll guide you my friend - I have a ton of experience. You tune that thing - you'll be a force to be reckon w/ come any street challenger. 99% of the time - You'll own souls.

Not going to work on my car. No enjoyment there. I like using my toys, not repairing or enhancing them. I'll pay someone to do the repairing or enhancing.

Right now, it looks like I'm going to buy on Saturday. I have to leave town on Sunday for 2 /2 weeks. I've narrowed it down to the BMW 335 or the Challenger. I think both will be gone this weekend due to tax refund weekend.

8 cylinder does 0-60 in 5.1. The challengers are heavy cars.

definitely paint the grill, any body shop - should be $225 or less.

I think it's hot - If the sides aren't tinted, I'd do that - also just go legal limit - otherwise it's too much. Just do legal 32 tint -

I do for several reasons BRC.

Room being first and foremost.

My old boss and best friend had three of the new Camaros (2 for children) and I had several opportunities to drive and ride in them.

My new Mustang experience is more limited, but if you were looking to go fast, I think they have the most bang for the buck in that department.

Since Obama gave Chrysler to Fiat, they have done some nice things with improving the interiors and styling across the board in my opinion.

They have pretty much stuck with the original Challenger styling cues and haven't deviated from it as much as the Camaro and Mustang.

They share the same production line with the 300C and Charger in Brampton. They are pretty much the same car until you start counting doors. I believe mine weighs a little over 4000, and that helps in the ride and room department.

I will say this though, it is a blast to drive on the Ozark/Tablerock lake roads! I have upgraded it to the SRT Bilstein suspension though, as an SRT owner was converting his to air bags. LMAO

Also thinking of going to the V8 model if the insurance agent can get the price down.

Tough choice.... drive one car to the other dealership, sit in both again, drive the other, compare options, comfort, etc; then have the salesmen fight to the death just for the hell of it.

Both are very nice and would be a good choice. I am partial to the second one, color, rims etc. but have heard nothing but good things about that new six.

I haven't been keeping up lately with all of the changes offered, but are they really offering a shaker hood now with that six cylinder?

Yes, I don't like the new European style. If I go with the 6 cylinder I can't even get leather seats. The interior is more cramped than previous models. It made me sad what they had done. I still think my 2005 first year retro was the best they ever did but maybe I'm biased.

Yep with the 2015 models. They also changed the grill and front end. Chrome tailpipes. First "major" change since the retro came out.

Doing that now. I sent them the link. Also I know what they paid for the cars and told then that. They both thought I was BS'ing till I told then the #. Then it was good, I wish everyone knew how much we paid. They would realize we are not making $5K - $10K on every car.

I'm not a big haggler - and that's probably not really a good thing - I like to get shit done and over. Usually Carmax is more than fair - think I've bought 12 cars there in the last 10 years - they love me and make it easy to buy a car - seriously they approved me in 3 seconds last time - from start to finish. LOL

Yeah, me, neither... I didn't do enough research with the first car I bought and regretted it, but so far everyone I've worked with at the BMW dealership has been very straightforward, and based on all the research, it didn't feel like I needed to haggle. I'm going to use carmax as a second opinion on the trade in value and my bank as a second offer on an interest rate, and I think BMW might actually win on the latter and be pretty competitive on the trade in value.

All that said, I'm still a little nervous about all the add-on junk, hoping they don't hard sell that crap... I've heard of people having to say no over and over with the hard sell, but I guess as long as I get the key to the car at the end without paying for super duper leather protectant and extended warranties, it won't matter much.

Simply Red 02-13-2015 05:44 PM

saw a new M3 today - white + black wheels - very attractive combo IMO.

BigRedChief 02-13-2015 10:14 PM

I'm still torn. It's still either the 335i or the Challenger. They are really totally different cars.

The Challenger pull for me is my youth when I actually rode around in those "real" muscle cars and owned them. I remember the good times of "cruising" and looking for women and a good time. So its probably just nostalgia. But the 2015 model rides the best of any of the retro muscle cars I've ever ridden in. It's comfortable and has plenty of luxury that the old cars from my youth never had.

The dilemma is the seat in the 335i. It wasn't a bad fit, just could have been better. Got me worried about the 1.5 hours I'll spend in it every day.

I can't seem to find a "regular" seat in the 335i. They all have the "sport" seat. I think that for us big guys those wings on the seats just don't feel right to us. If its just a regular seat, it might fit well.

It's part of the sport package on the 335i. Seems like a lot of them have that package as it also has the stiffer sport suspension. Without sport package they should have the lower bolster "regular" seats.

Miles 02-13-2015 10:47 PM

So I've got to drop down to the 328 if I want regular seats? If so, I can go drive one. Find out if the "regular" seats are the bomb. ICan I put a "regular" 328 seat in the 335i?

428i luxury line also looks like it has traditional seats.

You could.... use them for your boat?

Yeah, I don't know how easy they are to find so you can actually try them out and make sure they'd fit in a 335i... the sports seats would probably have to be good enough, just in case.
