Yeah. It's a crying shame they don't serve them together.
Smart though. They know where the money is. |

I'll try to make it down there. I've been talking to a bunch of you for too many years not to have a person to associate with the posts.

Also, if we get enough people we can rent out the party room there.

Another vote for Woodyard's.

I went by MO Brew yesterday and it didn't look open yet. If you guys are having a gathering in that area, I'll join. |
I've gotta see what is going on that weekend, seems I remember March/April being a mess, but let me know when and I'll try to make it. Haven't tried that place yet.

I'm pretty sure Mo Brew is open. I've walked by several times with doors open, people sitting inside, and beer flowing freely. Just haven't had time to go in and sit down. |

I think not. Make it happen, Morph. |
Made a trip to KC today and tried out Q39. Excellent ribs, brisket was good, puled pork was alright and the sauce was just meh. I'm still a Gates fan but it was worth the stop and would eat there again.

In my dream world all BBQ restaurants offer Gates as an alternative sauce.

Okay. I know this isn't KC BBQ, but damn does it pass the eye test:

Gate's...I don't mind being yelled at by the order taker that is whatever. But their system for getting the orders must be the most inefficient thing that has ever existed. You have to repeat your order 5 times and tell them if you want fries or not 10 times. HI MAY I HELP YOUUUU....again I would not mind you yelling at me if you would just listen when I respond.
I like Gates every now and again. It is super close to me in midtown. I like their burnt ends and beef but think their ribs are often poor and IMO low quality. |
Not sure which thread to put this in, but Zarda's won the Burnt Ends competition March Madness Tourney ran by the KC Star.

I live out of town, and have only eaten at 4 places. KC Joes, Jack Stack, AB, and Gates. KC Joes was the best. I thought Zardas winning might raise an eyebrow or two. You can't taste pictures, but the photo of Zardas Burntends does look very good. |

Had Q39 on Opening Day. Still hard to beat IMO.

Wabash isn't too bad on a good day, but I'll make a 45 minute trip for some KC Joe's.

Good 'ol Mike Zarda.

Well it is the KC Star what do they have now a couple hundred subscribers.
I dont get over to Zardas much but when I have I had no complaints. Q39 Q39 Q39 its a broken record here. Seriously if its the only place you eat BBQ in KC area how would you even know what the others are like. Same with Joes KC which I like very much but there are many joints that have good Que. I remember when Jackstack was all the rage in here and people kept justifying it because of the cheesy corn:rolleyes:ROFL |
Has anyone ordered Jack Stack or Joe’s on-line & had it delivered?
I want to put out a spread for some out of town guests from Wyoming at the lake & wanted to give them some good KC BBQ. Jack Stack or Joe’s would be great. |
Well, since this thread has been bumped, and since I made a fairly rare trip down to the original Arthur Bryants on Brooklyn Ave, I'll chime in.
I had the usual for me. Beef and Fry. It was $9.50, which isn't terrible for lunch these days. While you can't tip anymore for the old extra handful of meat, they give you so much that it's damned hard to eat all of it. I'm gonna guess there was about 3/4 pound of sliced brisket on my plate, and another 3/4 pound of fries. Its been a few year s since I went down there, but here is my update. The brisket was as good as ever. Great smoke flavor, but still great beef flavor. They leave just enough fat on to keep it super moist. I still think its the best brisket sandwich in KC, even though I think Q39 does a fine job. The sauce is what it is. You either love it or hate it. I happen to love the original sauce. For those that don't, they now have a more KC style sweet bbq sauce that's rather good also. Get there by 11:30 or you will be in line a while. I was very glad to see and taste that AB is still one of the best in KC |
Gotta give some love for Tin Kitchen in Weston. Smoked half chicken, brisket, pulled pork smothered fries are some highlights. During lent, they have a legit shrimp po'boy and fried catfish.

I grew up eating at the original Smoke Stack and I go to the Martin City Jack Stack everytime I am in town. The mail order food is good, but it loses some of its soul when you do the mail order thing. It will definitely scratch the itch though...especially out here in SOCAL where decent BBQ is pretty much nonexistent. As far as value, I think it's overpriced for the quantity of food you get. I have gotten pretty good at smoking ribs, and it's certainly a better value. God, those beans though, they are fuggin GOOD. |

I was travelling two weeks ago and had the WORST BBQ brisket ever in Arkansas. No matter where you go in KC, what you get will be light years beyond what you get in other places, trust me.
Quick reply to some of the suggested places: The new Gates in Independence is a nice facility, but Gates has always been suspect for quality of service. Some days its OK, some days it's a Chinese Fire Drill. Woodyard on Merriam Lane in KCK: It's a road house. The smoked chicken and the BBQ Chili are the best things on the menu. Service is slow. Don't go if you're in a hurry. Arthur Bryants: Very good value for the buck. Tip: If you order a combo sandwich, you can make ribs one of the meats. Ask for it dry, then put the sauce on at the table or get sauce to go. Try the original and the sweet tangy. Some people really hate the original. I love both. Rosedale: Everything is good except ribs. Great value for the buck, nice people. Q39: Still haven't been there, so I can't judge. Understand it's expensive and the portions are smaller than most BBQ places. Jack Stack: Good, safe, tourist BBQ. Not a real joint like LC's or Arthur Bryants. |

Q39 still has the best pulled pork in the city. |
Gates is ****ing terrible. I guess if you don't care about quality of meat or rubs, and just like your BBQ drowning in sauce, that place is for you.

It, however , will never be mistaken for a joint. |

Some other places in the city that deserve mention: Smoking Guns BBQ in North KC has (IMHO) the best burnt ends. I'm not a real big fan of burnt ends. Usually they're way too greasy and sloppy for my taste. Smoking Guns version is great, and the rest of their menu is very good too. Big T's is a joint just east of LC's on Blue Parkway. Their mixed plate is HUUUUGE. You get a lot of food, enough to feed two for sure. And they have a drive thru, which I love. And they're open Sunday. LCs is iconic, no better beef sandwich. It's messy, so get a lot of napkins. LC's, Big T's and Gates on US 40 are the closest BBQ joints to the stadiums. A sleeper place in near where I live in Independence called "A Liittle BBQ Joint" near US 24 and River, just west of Hi-Boys. They have an outdoor patio in good weather, and hot rodders like it because it has a classic car motif theme. Food is decent, not my favorite, but it's good. Nice people there too. They donate food to a lot of local charity events.

I'm happy with the ribs I make, but don't have the energy to try and also do beans. Maybe I should look into mail ordering just the beans. |

Jack Stack's beans are one of their signature items. Their onion ring stack is pretty spectacular too, but doesn't travel well.
When I was a kid, there was a place on 40 Highway not too far from Cool Crest called The Driftwood BBQ. It was a sit down diner kind of place. If you ordered BBQ beans, they came in a little ceramic bean pot, like a coffee cup size, but like a little jug shaped pot just big enough to dip a spoon into. They kept the beans piping hot, and that was outstanding. I wish places still did that, but I'm sure those were a bitch for the bus boys to wash. They looked kind of like this, but were individual serving sized. |

Who remembers when Arthur Bryants was in Ameristar casino?
I watched Superbowl XXXVI in there as a kid. Their BBQ itself was good, but that BBQ sauce is the worst I've had. |

Ill say it again ..
Slaps. They have a jalapeno sausage with a white sauce that is awesome. And their cheesy potato thing is the best |
