Surprisingly, I can find lots of excellent KC sauces at BBQ's Galore in Studio City. I don't know what I'd do without them. :D |

Q39 barbecue opening in Overland Park, expanding on 39th Street
Just two years after opening on 39th Street’s restaurant row, Q39 is expanding. Owner Rob Magee has purchased the former Hayward’s Pit Bar-B-Que building and land at 11051 Antioch Road in Overland Park. After a major interior and exterior renovation, including new landscaping and a new parking lot, he plans to open a Q39 barbecue restaurant there in spring 2017. Arizona-based Realm Architecture + Design designed the original location and also will design the new 7,100-square-foot restaurant with a similar urban-rustic decor. The dining room will seat more than 200 people. It also will have a full-service patio seating up to 104 people on the north side, a private dining space for up to 25 people, and a full-service bar seating up to 20. Like the 39th Street location, the Overland Park restaurant will have a large to-go area, but it will be double in size. With the surrounding offices, hotels, and residential, as well as easy access off of Interstate 435, Magee said he “couldn’t ask for a better demographic.” Magee also is expanding the original location. He is taking over a 1,100-square-foot space to the east of the restaurant at 1000 W. 39th St. Construction is scheduled to begin in late summer and completed by early fall for a November opening. The new space will seat 48 people and include a large two-level deck and indoor/outdoor bar separated by garage doors and covered by a waterproof pergola. The 40 outdoor seats will be available for full-service dining during warmer weather. Magee said the expansion will allow for more private functions, as well as more seating to reduce wait times for dine-in customers. This is good and bad. I wonder if the quality will still be the same.

Like Silock's original post, I just don't get the appeal. The BBQ was ok, not bad, not good...and at what they charge for "just ok" BBQ, it's not worth it. There are 10 other places I'd go to in the KC area before Q39, not to mention that I can smoke up better BBQ than what I had there.
Good luck in OP though. All of the JoCo Hipsters will love it |
I have been 4 times and the 4th was my last its just ok and far from the best I have had. My driving time is better served to Excelsior Springs and Wabash BBQ or KCK and Rosedale. I dont know but I think people fall in love with sides and forget whats important like Jack Staks.

I have to say though, last time I went I had a 2-meat plate with a side of burnt ends. Holy shit it was one of the top 5 BBQ dinners I've ever had.

It's nice to go to a place out here and get Gates extra hot sauce. Try the cajun shake from Cajun Injector they sell there, it's delicious. I've also been on them for a couple months to start adding Wabash. Edit: Also re: beans I have yet to find anything that compares to McGonigle's on Ward Parkway when they smoke outside and have those pit beans in there all day. |
Good; I'm glad I gave it a try. Brisket was great.
The Burnt Ends? Good....but it's hard to have bad burnt ends. They weren't stand out by any stretch. The chicken was solid but unspectacular. The ribs weren't as good as what I can make at home fairly easily. I actually really liked the beans; very unique flavor for BBQ beans. The slaw was interesting as well - I'd have never made something like that but it worked well. For me the star of the show was actually the sausage. I really really enjoyed it. It was good...but it wasn't worth the $60 that it cost for 2 meals, a beer, a cocktail and an appetizer. I'll just stick with Columbia Smoke and Fire here in town... |
