After signing his six-year, $101 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday morning, Justin Houston spoke to the media via conference call. Houston spoke about the process and what has been going on behind closed doors in recent months and days, giving us some unique insight. Houston, who has been on the franchise tag since February, knew that something might be in the works sooner rather than later. “At the end of the season they told me be patient and we will get a deal done,” Houston said. Houston did say that while he wasn’t sure how long a holdout would have lasted without a deal, he would have likely sat out through training camp. With a contract secure, Houston will be there to open camp with the rest of his teammates, playing on a team with high expectations. “I think it was important to get it done, put it behind me and move forward.” He also added… “I’m here now and we got the deal done so I’m ready to play ball.” The All-Pro is coming off a career season in which he amassed 22 sacks to set a new single-season franchise record, breaking the mark of 20 set by Derrick Thomas in 1990. Houston was waiting to hear news like the rest of us when things began to break on Tuesday. “I got a phone call yesterday saying I needed to come to KC while I was working out.” The 2011 third-round pick out of the University of Georgia stated that he didn’t care whether he received more money than J.J Watt, leaving those details up to his agent, Joel Segal. The main thing was getting security and staying in Kansas City. “To me it was very important,” Houston said. “I like coach Reid a lot. He’s a great coach. He motivates me and pushes me to be a better player. Any time you play for a coach like that, you love it.” |
30 sacks next year
Book it |
hell yah
this to me is the best thing thats happened in a long time, and a very good sign of things to come. Possibly might look back at this as the cornerstone of the 'new' chiefs when we when a playoff game we are not cheaps!!!! |
Cap keeps going up, 3 years from now these deals will be nothing
|
To the idiot who claimed he wouldn't/shouldn't get Watt money:
Take a step back and literally **** your own face. |

and also players will look at this deal and think they wanna come to KC now, instead of 'cheaps' its win/win not just for J H but to attract other players in future |
I can't wait for a guy to sign a big money contract and say something like, "well they had to pay me a lot because my coach is an asshole."

This team has a lot of young talent they will need to pay in the next 3-5 years. I love Dorsey getting the deal done with Houston today, but it also means we probably won't be big FA players the next couple years. That money will be earmarked for our own FAs. A value signing here and there not withstanding... |

If you're doing things correctly, shouldn't have to dip into FA for big fish anyway.
Keep talent you've drafted and developed. You don't have to worry about scheme fit, personality conflicts etc. You already know you're own will fit |

Had to be done though. We have 2 year window. Jamal starts to slow due to age in 2017. And other reasons I'm not going to list in a Houston signing thread. |

So what the hell are they gonna do with the rest of the money?
I wouldn't be opposed to rolling it over |

The Packers literally did not sign a single FA from another team, and I would call them Super Bowl favorites right now. The Chiefs have great young talent due to get paid in the next two seasons (Poe, Kelce, Berry, etc.) and that doesn't even account for guys like DJ/Hali/Sean Smith that they may try to bring back. That's where the money needs to go. |

That'd be cool. That would definitely make it easier to do something with dj next year. |

If poe and kelce continue to go the way they are this year, I'd for sure approach them about extending contracts

Here's where the trouble will begin. If Poe and Kelce continue their level of play, you are talking about two guys who are going to command big bucks in the SAME offseason. Hopefully we could get Poe for 10 a year and Kelce for near the same. Those two are on a good path to the bank, though.

If Dee Ford and Eric Fisher play well this then that will make this team team even more loaded. Hell if our draft picks from this year play well then we are even more stacked. |

LMAO Famous last words... |
I think the most entertaining thing I've been seeing today is people who seriously think this contract is gonna be bad for Denver because it means they'll have to pay Von more. LMAO
As if he is better than Houston. They'll tag Miller next year now, and he may end up with a bigger deal, but it certainly won't be because he deserves it. |

Poe is great but he's gonna have some miles on him. |

I love how Donkey fans use career numbers. Right now Houston is better than Von.

You can essentially have him for 3 years for whatever money using the tag. If he doesn't want a deal that works for both sides |

We should be fine in 2017. Big contracts are just Davis, Kelce and Poe. Kush is a wild card though.
If I had to guess, I think they will draft to replace DeVito next year. I hope Stephenson or Allen plays well this year and we agree on a reasonable deal. |
I don't know anyone that would rather have Von Miller over Justin Houston. That's crazy pills.

I find it kind of interesting that he will be making about a million per game. I remember when Reggie Jackson and George Brett were making about a million per season and it seemed so crazy. |

But I'm sure you've had 22 sacks this year too, ****in tool. |

Evan Mathis, come on down... |
The fact Dorsey mentioned we have room to make more deals absolutely makes me think we throw an offer at Mathis. If not begin working on Poes next deal.

Am I the only person here who has no real interest in Evan Mathis?
We've got enough ****ing guards. If we add any player to the offensive line it should be an OT of some type. |
Yeah, I don't see the need for Mathis. I think we need to see what the players on our roster can do at guard, personally.
|
Quote:
What? We have 3 potential candidates for OT. We don't need another one. |
Quote:
Derek Sherrod is a cripple, and Jeff Allen played a whopping single preseason at RT. Your irrational hatred and assumption that we have ZERO LEGITIMATE CANDIDATES for the starting RG spot doesn't affect that we've basically got two real OTs, one guy who was a position transfer, and a cripple. We need a legitimate swing tackle to either play behind Donald Stephenson or play in front of Stephenson and let him be the swing tackle (who did a pretty good job of it in 2013) |

You never had one inkling of my argument. I don't have an irrational hatred of any of the the candidates at OG, nor did I ever say that there were zero legitimate candidates. My only argument was that the assumption that the line WOULD be better lacked any supporting evidence. The chance that this line would not be better were about equal to the chance that they would. Until these guys step up and actually play to the level of their potential, the line remains a question mark. The fact is, they do have potential, and I have no interest in Mathis either because of that. I also have no interest in OT because there is potential there also. But you keep being a dense mother****er. |

Not saying I want him, but I'm honestly SHOCKED that Dorsey hasn't offered Marshall Newhouse a job yet. He's brought aboard all these other former Packer rejects. Why not bring aboard a guy who was actually GOOD for a season or two? |
