You’re right about the screenshot, but I’ve never figured out how to post images from my phone other than as an attachment, and those are annoying.

Last 2:

More interested in defending TV Stations other journalists are categorizing as unethical.

Stations should be lowercase.

If you don’t trust a paper, when they publish anonymous, baseless character assassinations rather than provide a balance, when they attack their readers, when they are incompetent enough in the digital realm to make paywalls flimsier than the border at the American southwest, changes are necessary.

That is one long sentence, but I’ll allow it with a couple modifications. I’d get rid of the first comma after paper, and I’d get rid of the comma after readers and say “when they themselves aren’t competent enough...”. It makes it more clear what your clauses are.

DJ's left nut 07-12-2019 02:29 PM

Note to Clay: I'm a terrible editor and rarely read for grammar/punctuation unless it jumps out at me. Worse still, nobody really writes like I do so I have a tendency to criticize for stylistic changes rather than substantive ones. I welcome anyone to ignore all of those - my voice is mine, your voice is yours.

So take any of my PM suggestions with a grain of salt. Otherwise, good work - hope you get plenty of eyes on it because there's a lot there that needs to be said outside of this forum.

Actually, a proper rewrite of that clause would be “when they themselves aren’t competent enough... to make paywalls less flimsy than...”

Sounds to me like the Star wants to suck up to the national liberal media, which is their prerogative (wow, I always thought that was spelled perogative -- ****in' hick).

I would cancel my subscription, but I did that in the 1980s. I can delete Red Zone Extra app and just rely on The Athletic for my Chiefs news. That'll work.

Hammock Parties 07-12-2019 02:31 PM

those are separate clauses though

we don't trust them

they publish bullshit

they attack us

they lack digital sense

I could accept leaving the last two separate, I just don’t like that many commas in a sentence. The first comma needs to go though.

Hammock Parties 07-12-2019 02:37 PM

but those clauses aren't related...

The star has never had this problem with politicizing social stuff on the Chiefs. That's a new thing. Seems more of a combo of a bad writer, an editorial board too stubborn to admit they're wrong, and a lack of good enough writers to balance the bad with good solid journalism. Seems like the main problem is they went all in backing the wrong horse.

RunKC 07-12-2019 02:47 PM

How hard is it for the Star to do this? This could have been quick and painless.

I would still be careful there. The structure of the sentence is:

If you don’t trust a paper when they A, B, or C, then changes are necessary.

I added the “then” to make it a more proper if/then. Looking at it in that structure, you see why you don’t need the first comma. In my previous edit, I combined B and C into a new clause essentially saying “they attack us yet can’t even get their own shit straight”. It’s stylistic for sure. I hate a lot of commas.

JFC I’m just now seeing this.

This is honestly the most infuriating shit I’ve ever experienced as a fan. It should be really ****ing simple. If the DA doesn’t have enough evidence to even charge the man, the local paper should be able to acknowledge that they have no idea what really happened and they ****ed up trusting their sources and an edited audio clip. Why do they continue to pretend that they have some inside information that we and the DA don’t have?

When The Star sends its people, they're not sending their best.

They're sending people that have a lot of problems, and they're bringing those problems with them. They're bringing agenda. They're bringing bias. They're SJWs.

And some, I assume, are good people.

DJ's left nut 07-12-2019 03:49 PM

All of 'em should. The whole Star should be cut off at the knees, as should TV5.

The ONLY reason you'd give any of them any access is to make your point even more firmly. You could argue that giving Mellinger and Welniak access after they handled this aftermath better than anyone else in their organizations does more to establish why they got that access than anything.

It's similar to giving a waiter a .01 tip if you're super pissed off. Flat out stiffing someone can be an oversight or a mistake; something that could lead them curious as to the motives. But actively giving them .01 leaves no questions - you're actively telling that person to get ****ed. (Eds note: I was a waiter in HS, I have never done this but a co-worker had it done to her and I knew exactly why).

If you cut off the star, the message is pretty clear. But if you cut off everyone in the sports department except for the one guy that at least made a little effort at walking things back, the message is crystal clear.

But as consumers I still think we tell every last one of them to **** themselves.

I don't ever read the star so Im already boycotting without doing anything, but you don't see the irony in posting their article and link in the OP and then complaining about giving them links?

That's been the most ironic thing about this. If people stopped linking their tweets and articles, they'd be less inclined to write stupid shit and they'd see their already down numbers go even lower. This whole thing has probably raised their numbers and given them even more reason to come out with articles such as the ones in the OP.

The star is already dying. Everytime an article is linked here or a tweet is linked or Everytime people respond to them, they get a little bit more life.

It's like the people who complain about SAUTO in the Tyreek threads yet always bring him up even when he's not online. You're just playing into their hands.

That's why I posted the whole article - because most people won't bother with the link. As I noted previously, I NEVER post entire articles as I believe authors deserve their clicks by and large. I definitely never post paid content for that same reason.

As for posting the link at all - Kyle asked us years ago that if we post an entire article, to post the link as well. He was concerned that there would be issues with publishers if we didn't. It was unlikely to amount to anything but it's a headache the board doesn't need.

But/for the request of the board administrators/owners, I wouldn't have done that at all. But I'd venture to guess that the link drove very little traffic. And in posting the article here, we've generated enough discussion/frustration to lead to a pretty spectacular ratio on that tweet and perhaps it also further encourage Clay into creating his piece.

And in so doing, more and more people will walk away from the Star entirely.

I think the perfect balance was struck.

This isn't about clicks to the Star. The Star is outraged that we question the narrative they've fed us. Attacking the media, pointing out how TERRIBLE they are, is a tremendous public service. Clicks ain't gonna save the Star and pushing back against this crap WILL cause The Star to lose subscribers and will cause their writers mental anguish.

The Star editorial board appears to be a convenient excuse for hardcore libs who usually write about social issues to wail away on Tyreek Hill to satisfy their perverted sense of justice.

It wouldn't surprise me if a single one of the sports staff has a damn thing to do with any of those editorials.

That doesn't exonerate the sports staff, but it does make you feel a tiny bit sorry for them.

There are some real assholes in power at the Star.

Yeah... well we aren’t the ones who almost ruined a guy’s ****ing reputation, career, and long term well-being with complete and total ignorance & negligence.

If I do anything like they have in my line of work, I’m a G-O-N-E-R. No questions asked.

Yeah, that's a really weird response. These people just don't get it. From top to bottom, they simply don't get it. That organization is in deep trouble, whether this incident is the death knell or not.

"I suspect that you would not appreciate me calling your employer demanding that you be fired".

Maybe he now knows how Tyreek must feel when the KC Star and other fake news outlets have been calling for Tyreek's employer (the Chiefs/NFL) to fire him.

He says that when that's exactly what they've been doing. Only difference is they manufactured their evidence.

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Emily Taylor Center for Women & Gender Equity (ETC) at the University of Kansas is to provide leadership and advocacy in promoting gender equity and challenge gender-related barriers which impede full access, inclusion, and success. Approaching our work from a social justice lens, we practice intersectional trans-inclusive feminism to promote gender equity by raising awareness of critical issues related to gender and sexism, providing opportunities to translate awareness into action, and empowering individuals to advocate for themselves and others.
Rock Chalk... the KC Star Editorial Page Editor is a radical feminazi who hates all types of cock.

Wants confidentiality for his employees. Wants to air a recording of Tyreek's personal family issues/discussions that he didn't know were being taped.

Sorce 07-12-2019 07:48 PM

I was thinking more about their version of the audio, "you didn't ride for me in 2014 and you aren't riding for me now" makes a huge difference after they took it out of context.

Hearing that the first time I interpreted it as you didn't cover for me then an you aren't now.

With the additional context I hear you lied on me then and your lying on me now.

That's a huge difference. I don't really do video stuff anymore but I wonder if the audio from the KCTV5 "interview" can be cut up to sound bad.

Coach 07-12-2019 07:52 PM

It appears that KC Star and KCTV5 is trying to conduct an character assassination.

It wouldn't surprise me if a single one of the sports staff has a damn thing to do with any of those editorials.

That doesn't exonerate the sports staff, but it does make you feel a tiny bit sorry for them.

There are some real assholes in power at the Star.

As always we need to burn it all down so it can be built properly

Tribal Warfare 07-12-2019 08:02 PM

Who are the KCSTAR & KCTV's advertising partners that's the second volley that should be cast.

Mike Gundy was right after all those years. That's why he doesn't read the newspaper because it's garbage.

Oh I decided. Yes, I have made a decision.

BlackOp 07-12-2019 08:51 PM

The best part...is they haven't, yet, realized their careers in KC are over. The city is too small for something this ****ed up. I'm enjoying watching them squirm...slowly coming to the realization.

What can Fat Brooke really contribute if she's not writing DV hit-pieces? She's terrible at covering actual football related stories...and she sure as shit isn't going to attempt to write another controversial one.

KCTV5 is screwed...they are getting sued to the stone age and know it.
