I got just one word for .17 caliber - Savage. I've got a couple of 'em - one was my Dad's - they're the bee's knees IMHO, make's the average joe start to feel like he can really shoot after he gets used to 'em (on a non-windy Kansas day). Dad got his early, when they only had wooden stocks - mine is a polymer stock - both are 'bull barrels' and I recommend those.
Here's a 'new' model - newer than mine - but if I was shopping for one today I'd look hard at these for hunting if not long range plinking. Shorter barrel than mine, but pre-threaded for a suppressor (can). I really like the looks of it. Like their bolt on this model, too. And if you haven't used their accutrigger - you'll love it.

If the Savage just won't do - I like CZ rimfires. I've got a .22lr model but would give a .17hmr the eye if that Savage just won't trip your trigger. CZ's are beauty queens.

That little Browning autoloader is pretty sweet. One of my hunting buddies had one when I was growing up. John Moses Browning (PBUH) is hard to beat.

I'll cosign on the Savage 17 HMRs. I have a 93r17 BVS. It is the most accurate rifle I own, and it has been nice to have since 22 LR is non-existent.

Cabela's has tins of Federal .22lr on their website right now. 325 rounds for $18.99. 1 tin per day per person.

More 17hmr lore - IIRC, a lot of the 17hmr ammo is made by 1 or 2 factories and different labels slapped on it, so even if you're a 'die hard' fan of brand X or Y, it's made by brand Z with a brand X label - so don't pay more. I stick w/CCI mostly and Hornady in a pinch, and then choose the CCI 'target' or 'coyote' or 'squirrel' as necessary - the coyote stuff will blow a bigger hole, you don't want to be blowing up a tasty rabbit or squirrel. Dear Leader has pretty much wrecked the US $ so prices are twice what they were when I started. But hey, that's everything, everywhere. Dear Leader knows best, Mr NSA watcher.
My eyes aren't what they were, so when I use a .17hmr at the range I bring binoculars to see how close to the 10 ring I got - on a wind free day, with my good scope it's like I knew what I was doing or something. I wouldn't want me mad at me, if the wind's not blowing (it's Kansas. Wind is serious sh*t with a tiny bullet going fast as h*ll)

The local big-box outdoors store has people lined up outside on Monday morning, when the truck comes with the 22LR on it, and it sells out in minutes

I thought about getting an 17 hmr rifle but I went with two other options instead. I got a .17 Hornet rifle (it's a centerfire round that shoots at 3600fps) and I got a 22 Magnum rifle.

The .17 Hornet rifle is like a friggen laser beam. It's so accurate and so fast it's really amazing. It's supposedly accurate up to 300 yards but who the hell can see a small varmit at 300 yards anyway, amirite? Lol, I'll never be as good of a shooter as this rifle/ammo allows.

I then went with the 22 magnum rifle because it's a much bigger, but much heavier and slower bullet. It's still accurate out to 125 yards or so, but then it really falls off quickly.

The 17 hmr is right in between these two as far as stopping power and accuracy. It's cheaper than both the 22 mag and the 17 hornet and the ammo is way more available too. I might end up getting a 17 hmr rifle just because the ammo is so much more available. But performance wise, it's not nearly as good as the 17 Hornet (which is a reloadable cartridge) or has as much impact up close as the 22 magnum IMHO.

Oh yah, and lets not forget about the new 17 Magnum (WSM?) option too...

Speaking of magnum rimfires....anyone shot the new 17 Super Mag? Looks like it could be really fun....especially if ammo isn't crazy!

That gun is the only reason I didn't pick up a .17 yesterday. I'm seriously considering the hornet at this point as well. I have a buddy that drills gophers at 250 yards with his. After a 150 yards the .17 starts getting a little iffy. Any issues on finding ammo? Also, is yours a Savage, Rugar, or?

The only draw back on this rifle is getting the ammo. Only Hornady makes it so you have to find a Hornady dealer, call them, and see if they have the ammo available. Word is that when the 17 hmr bullet came out, it severely impacted the demand for the 17 Hornet. Hornady doesn't have a lot of demand for the 17 Hornet so I don't think it's a high priority for them to make the ammo either.

The rifle itself is great and the off the shelf ammo is excellent, I have not had any issues with either. Now, I haven't put hundreds of rounds down range because the ammo is hard to get. I've shot less than a hundred rounds.

If you read all of coyotekillerNE's posts, he ends up loving the rifle and the ammo.

Here's the deal with mine: I bought the top of the line savage rifle, it's got the super nice would stock with the thumb hole, and it's got the super nice jeweled bolt group, along with the 22" longer barrel. I've put a Leupold scope on it. I've had zero issues with the Hornady ammo and rifle, but I've heard that other people have had issues with the ammo/rifles.

I contacted Hornady via email to voice my concerns and they replied and said it was a rifle issue, not an ammo issue. They told me to test fire the ammo I had (I gave the batch numbers because I read that the batch number I had was supposedly bad ammo) and I did test fire and I had no problems.

So I really think it's best to spend the money on a higher end savage. For whatever reason, the high end savages don't have any issues where as the lower end savages, well, they "might" have an issue with the Hornady ammo.
