It is, its very sad to see.
Heres a true story, my very best friend when when I was stationed at Ft. Campbell, we were inseparable, people joked about, he was a super cool mexican dude.
Well he invited me over to he and his girlfriends off post apartment one night to watch a game and drink... so I get there and like 20 feet from the door I'm hearing that somethings VERY wrong. I lightly knocked a couple times, nothing. So I step over to the front window and was able to see through a good crack in the two curtains.
He had her on the couch, on top of her, choking her, slapping her, yanking her hair, calling her all kinds of names etc. I froze up and watched this go on for a few minutes, I couldnt believe what I was seeing, this was NOT the guy I knew at all.
I finally yelled through the glass, nothing, neither one reacted as if they'd heard me, like they were both in some kinda trance. It was one of those weird things though where she was egging it on, like he'd start to let go and she'd spit at him and laugh about it and try to hit back etc, it was like they were feeding off one another.
Long story short, I got tired of trying to get their attention and went straight to the nearest pay phone and called the cops and left. He was arrested that night and I dont know what happened after that because we never spoke again and I didnt inquire with any of our NCO's about it... just wanted to forget it.
It was incredibly ugly and very sad, sad that he would be that way with a woman and sad that I'd just lost my best friend, the rest of my hitch there wasnt the same without him... but I'm glad I did the right thing and wouldnt do it any differently today.
