Self chokes in the elite8, and has for years before he finally was able to win it all in 2008, barely surviving Steph Curry, and then was able to get to the NC game 4 years later in 2012.

His current elite8 record after last night is 2-6.

I understand at this point in the tournament you're playing the very best and only 1 team can win it all, but that's a horrible record in that round of 8. I'm not calling for the guy to be fired by any means. But his elite8 record something worth of discussion, he's a choke artist in that rd.

He's had 4 one seeds the last 8 years. No FF. so pathetic

DJJasonp 03-27-2016 10:15 AM

this loss is not like Stanford or Northern Iowa, or even VCU.

Villanova is a legit top-4 team.

That said, I do think Self struggles with the short turnaround games.

But let's face it, someone else summed it up nicely before - we just dont have the bigs down low, and Perry peed down his leg.

When I saw the first 3-4 touches that Perry had ending up with no basket, and not a foul being drawn, I knew we were headed for big trouble.

If it's any consolation, Coach K sucks, too...

Kansas' loss to Villanova was Bill Self's ninth NCAA tournament loss as the better seed, tied with Mike Krzyzewski for the most since 2004, Self's first season at Kansas.

K is 11-2 in elite 8 games
self is 2-6

But yeah basically the same

I think KU will always struggle in the tournament until Self realizes how important it is to value possession of the basketball and make free throws. In the tournament the margin of winning and losing is so small that you have to make sure you win the turnover battle and take advantage of every charity stripe trip you get. We lost that game last night when we threw the ball away what 8 out of 9 consecutive trips down the court? I realize we came back and took a lead after that, but you can't have that many trips down the court without even getting a shot off and his teams constantly go trip after trip down the court without even getting a shot off. Our aggressiveness bites us in the *** because it results in to high a turnover ratio which in turn leads to easy buckets on the other end. A lot of times we lose because our opponents shot a worse percentage but they valued the possession better and got more shots which was just enough to edge us.

DJJasonp 03-27-2016 12:20 PM

well....there is also the issue that it appears the players didnt quite execute the game plan either.

Self called them "selfish" in his half-time interview.

c'mon....Selden threw up, what? 3 airballs, and not to mention how many other ugly shots?

There WERE times in the 2nd half that Ellis had sealed his defender well, but no entry pass happened.

I'm not putting all the blame on Self.

And for the record, I dont think our season was a disappointment at all. If we would have lost to Uconn or Umass, then yeah, I would have called it a disappointment.

But there is no shame in losing to Villanova in the elite 8.

Assclowns. All of you.

Ben Zobrist is a dissapointment.

The Royals just aren't the team they were last year.

Alex Smith is a NFL QB.

Bill Self should be fired.

Someone is an ass clown alright.

UVA beats Cuse 9 times out of 10. The dance is a heartless bitch.

Are you going to claim that Ned Yost is a Carlos Correa mishandled ground ball away from getting lucky one year and then choking the next? And before you get on my dick, I'm a Royals fan, and the point I'm making is that what you're saying about Self's luck in the 2008 tournament also applies to the Royals in 2015. That's how ridiculous it is.

I like Self and root pretty hard for KU. But it seems like his teams just can't figure stuff out like the 3/4 court press and whatever Nova was doing to Ellis. He seems to tighten up and not adjust well in big games, which might be why his players seem to do the same. Reminds me of Marty a little.

Or maybe he's just unlucky.

I think there's something to the idea that he struggles after a two day layoff. Self is at his best when he's familiar with his opponent (I think it's why he dominates the Big 12).

Whatever helps you rationalize a close loss in a 50/50 game against the best team statistically in the nation, I guess. But the fact that Perry Ellis didn't show up to play basketball yesterday isn't on Self, I'm afraid. Nor is the fact that the non-Devonte Graham players went 1/13 from the perimeter on mostly open shots (a strength for the team all year).

It's not a real knock on Self. I love the man and hope he becomes our Coach K.

Waiting for the 2016-17 thread...

Jim freaking Boeheim & Syracuse just cost me $1300 in my NCAA Tourney pool. If UVA wins, I automatically win the pool. Now, best I can do is get 2nd and I have to have Notre Dame beat UNC.
