NEW YORK (AP)—Cubs manager Lou Piniella has decided to move ace right-hander Carlos Zambrano(notes) to the bullpen.

Piniella talked to Zambrano about switching to an eighth-inning role before Chicago faced the New York Mets on Wednesday night. He says Zambrano was ready to do whatever was best for the team and the change “makes all the sense in the world.”

Ted Lilly(notes) will be inserted into the rotation when he comes off the disabled list, probably this weekend.

Zambrano agreed to a $91.5 million, five-year contract extension in August 2007 that includes a 2013 option that could make the deal worth $110.75 million over six seasons. He says he doesn’t like the idea of being a reliever but wants to help the team win.

At least a message was sent - the D-Backs position players are letting their pitcher know right now that they don't need him drilling another Cardinal because Jason Motte and Mitchell Boggs can come out of the 'pen with 97 mph stuff, a nasty disposition and a generally expendable nature.

Gotta love it when Yadi big leagues those pitches in the dirt.

I'd like Matheny to come in every couple of weeks and just hit him with a newspaper like a spoiled puppy. Yadi should never EVER miss a ball like that. When he gives a shit, his technique is perfect and his pitch recognition is so good that he's able to recognize it immediately.

But he gets lazy out there sometimes and crap like that happens.
