Good night of baseball Friday and good day of baseball today....except for the losing.

They had the World Series trophy presentation at the game today along with raising the World Championship flag out in center field. It was the Royals first home spring training game so it is the only game they plan on doing this for. The mayor of KC was there to throw out the first pitch. Very neat to see.

Friday Night baseball is the best. Lean back Cain

1. Kansas City Royals

Yes, winning the World Series helps, but Kansas City would top this list even if it lost to the Mets last fall. The Royals have the advantage of homegrown talent, many of whom have played together since the minor leagues. But they also have a well-defined, unselfish way of playing baseball (athleticism, defense, putting the ball in play and a deep bullpen).

“I’ve never been around a team like this in my life,” manager Ned Yost said. “Every single one of them wants what’s best for the team. Mike Moustakas, a run producer, is asked to hit second. Alex Gordon, an All-Star, is asked to bat eighth. Chris Young goes back and forth between starting and the bullpen. Jarrod Dyson, Paulo Orlando … nobody [complains]. It doesn’t matter who it is, they all are willing to do whatever it takes to win.
“And [GM] Dayton [Moore] has done a great job bringing in only the guys who fit in. We do a lot of due diligence. No matter who it is—Kendrys Morales, Ben Zobrist, Johnny Cueto, Ian Kennedy—we make sure we ask around about their character. And there have been times we have flat out said ‘no’ and walked away from a player for that reason.

“Years ago in Milwaukee, I remember we had a guy that people warned me about. I was like, ‘He’ll be fine here. We’ll change him around our group.’ Well, he was a disaster. And I vowed ‘Never again.’”

• Outfielder Jose Martinez is no kid prospect; he is 27 years old and played independent ball as recently as 2014 for the Rockford Aviators. But now he’s on Kansas City's 40-man roster in its big league camp, which speaks to the amazing year he had last season: .384/.461/.563 for Omaha, the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate. Martinez is an odd player. He is 6'7" but does not have plus power or speed, nor does he walk all that much. What he does have is a knack for getting the barrel to the baseball. “All I know is that he can hit,” Yost said. “Every day I’d get the minor league report and it was, ‘two hits, three hits, two hits…’ After a while, it gets your attention.”

Bubba needs to start picking up the pace. 0 /9 so far in Spring. It is still way early, but not what you want to see from a #5 pick in the draft.

Moose showing some early power today! I hope we see a lot more of that this year!!

My buddy bought a pair of tickets to Opening Night for $180 per in the upper deck. Someone who knows tickets better than I do: Are they going to drop the day of or is this about as low as they'll get?

I'd really like to go, but if they're going to drop significantly, I'll wait and buy a few for myself later.

Thanks!

Hamwallet 03-07-2016 06:46 PM

I bet they go up on opening day. I already have tickets to every bobble head game and a couple other giveaway nights. You can get some really cool free stuff at some of these.

Paniero 03-08-2016 12:19 PM

I cannot wait for the Royal's season to start. For all of my adult life, baseball season signaled that winter has come and gone, and the cold with it. The weather turns warmer, and the grass turns green again. The start of a new season is symbolic; one, the Royals season, brings about new hope and all the joy that comes with baseball. The other, spring itself, getting warmer as the baseball season progresses and cycles all the way to cool October air, is intertwined with baseball. Adults like us who were once kids like us remember April as the start of something beautiful, a confluence of events that made this time of year incredibly exciting.

And that was when the Royals were bad. This year is different, in a number of ways. In Texas, winter doesn't put up much of a fight between summer and spring. I no longer get a summer vacation, and I'm getting older as the day goes on. But the excitement of this season makes trumps the excitement of last season's start, which trumped every season start for 30 years.

I cannot wait.

Couple of interesting things:

In Mesa yesterday, my brother and his son were at the Cubs park for the game. When Ben Zo was introduced, the Royals contingent in the park gave him a standing O.

Today, at the end of an inning in Orlando Calixte had the ball after the final out of the half inning, my brother called out to him to toss the ball up. He did, into the waiting hands of my nephew.

ST is greatest time on earth.

I don't know. The megathread is great and terrible at the same time. You get all your Royals bits in one nice, streamline. But, on the other hand, you also get a fair amount of banter you may or may not want. Perhaps the subforum is the healthiest compromise. There is probably insufficient activity to warrant a whole new site, imo.

Probably late with this thought, but I would think that a sub forum here would have been a better idea.

Agreed, I think you'd be much better served by a subforum rather than a seperate site.

Agreed. I wouldn't use a separate site. I'd like it all here if we could.

Maybe just an entire baseball sub-forum like DC and Media Center?

I'd love it if he signed with the Royals.

Is Hootie still banned on a Royals Planet?

30$ seats in Surprise

4 Attachment(s)
Can't beat the spring training experience with 30$ seats from the third row of Section 105 with plenty of Missour-uh hillbilly's in attendance.

Ace was pitching BP in the 1st, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits but recovered and by the third he was making the Brewers look silly at 97 mph. Kelvin & Wade were awesome to see up close working it. Gordo went 4/4, the last one at least a 425 bomb straight away. Attached thumb is the fist pump going back in the dugout.

In the photo below, Rob Riggle & wifey share a whisper while George Brett, Pedro, Ned and the Nascar driver Bowyer look on. Oh, and there was an Infante sighting... he looks in shape. Got to see Mondesi mash a 2 out double that went a long way into the gap, kid looks like he put on a few pounds since the WS.

Except he didn't go yard. RBI double off the top of the wall.

Yep, fixed... the kid hit it hard into the gap. Looking forward to his progress

Moose is tearing it up so far. I hope he can stay this hot for the regular season. Could be a break out year for him.

It seems Moose and Hos just keep getting better. Love this team!!

Moose tears it up every spring training... lol
