Exactly. Shildt didn't fix the offense or the bullpen, it was mirage.

If he bombs in his first full season he'll be easy to move on from, of course his job is probably tied to Mozeliak's too so he might get all the time in the world.

Yes, this is Mo's hand picked manager. Hired him, developed him as a manager. He gets full credit if Shildt turns out to be a top shelf manager.

If Shildt fails it also taints Larussa, Oquendo, Molina and all the other minor league coaches who publicly vouched for him as a manager.

That said...........

We dont know if Mo wanted to fire Matheny a couple of years ago. He wanted to hire Franco but Dewitt wanted Matheny. We will never know those things. Shildt's going to get another year. If we revert back to Matheny level play, they are only out chump change to move on.

I'm not really a Mo supporter but I'm not on the fire him bandwagon either. I'm giving him this off season to do more than the usual moves to make this team a legitimate playoff team again. See if Shildt is the real deal. Or else I'm on the that run him out of town on a rail team.

Terrible managing, terrible pitching.

Jewish Rabbi 09-15-2018 12:42 PM

Webb in to promptly give the lead right back.

'Hamas' Jenkins 09-15-2018 12:44 PM

Both Thursday and today are just as much on Schildt as the starting pitchers. There's nothing about Gomber or Gant that should give a manager confidence that they are anything other than backend/AAAA pitchers. With expanded rosters, they should always be on a short leash.

Jewish Rabbi 09-15-2018 12:49 PM

And that’s the season. Matheny gave away too many games earlier this year, Shildt has been less than stellar after his contract, but ultimately this was a flawed roster with that relied on too many rookies that ran out of gas.

Shildt has been awful, not less than stellar. Just another braindead idiot behind the controls that can't recognize when his pitchers are in trouble.

The rookies didn't run out of gas; they regressed to the mean. Guys like Gant, Gomber, Hudson, and Poncedeleon are all 5th starter/AAAA players. Mo did a terrible job building the bullpen, it was as bad as it has ever been in August but got by on luck, and then the luck normalized in September. Meanwhile, Schildt kept flushing games by relying on Norris because he couldn't see that he had been a ****ing turd since June.

All the while, Mo keeps losing trades and passing on players that could help them. Pham is .338/.417.570 over the last month, FWIW.

what trade did he lose? As far as Pham goes, we have YEARS of waiting for him to live up to his potential. He needed to go. Way to may outfielders on this roster.

agreed. He seems to have that old school managerial gene that this is my guy, he will get right. Just got to give him a chance. That’s not a Schildt thing. 75%+ of all managers are like that. But, OTOH who is reliable out of the pen he can bring in for 5-6 innings every game?

disagree on Gomber and Hudson. I think they have a #3/#4 starter ceiling, not AAAA starter.

How many other OF on the Cardinals have put up a 6 WAR season? Certainly not Fowler (and not Ozuna, either). Pham was the best player on the team last year and the best player on the team during the first 1.5 months of the season. Voit is tearing the cover off the ball in NY while Shreve gets pisspounded. Meanwhile, Jose Martinez has ****ing killed the team with his offense in September (and his horrific defense at every position all year).

Mozeliak cannot evaluate the guys he has in house for shit, and neither can his managers. It's why they kept running Holland, Fowler, and Norris out there, Martinez now, and it's why they jettisoned Pham, but they give these mediocre starters and relievers enough rope to hang the entire ****ing team.

Frazod 09-15-2018 02:34 PM

So what if we waited years. Now that he has lived up to the potential, it makes it ok that we shipped him out of town?

God this is an INSANE take.

This is unfortunatly a very good recap. Shreve was also a guy I read at the time Yankees fans were very excited to be gone at the time.

Other that hurts with Pham is he is just now getting into arbitration years despite his age.

Are you Cardinals fans bigger fans of the Cards then you are of the Chiefs?

Certainly seems so for many but I guess that the difference of being a winner like the Cards and a almost ran like the Chiefs.

I’d definitely take a Chiefs Superbowl over a Cardinals W.S. When the Cards lose it doesn’t bother me as bad because of past success.

For most of my life that has been true. However with the presence of Matheny for the last few years and the Chiefs drafting Mahomes, the gap has definitely narrowed.

I have been a bigger football fan than baseball fan since the last strike. Although with the changes within the NFL the past few years it has pushed me back towards baseball again.
I still don't care for this era of baseball as much as it was years ago. Home Runs are cool but I liked lots of base hits and stealing bases much more as there was more consistent action.

ive had way more fun watching this team for 6 weeks after seeing Matheny fired than I ever thought possible out of this team this year.

We are tied for a playoff spot. 15 games to go. In the next two weeks if we make the playoffs with our schedule, we will have earned it and may have a chance in a series. If not, already exceeded any expectations I had for this year.

After all, I have a Mahomes in my fandom back pocket to enjoy.

he's had some, let’s be generous “missteps” the last couple of weeks. Maybe he’s learning. The 7th inning against the heart of the order was the time to throw your best pitcher available. Maybe the game gets out of hand later. If you throw a “meh” pitcher right then, it could get out of hand right now.

VAChief 09-21-2018 09:39 PM

Carpenter back in a funk, last 15 games getting on base at less than .300 and slugging at .208. Last 30 games OPS about .650.

there wasn’t enough time. They rushed him back the first time. Something is up with his health. We will probably find out this off season whatever it was.

Like I said when they put him in the bullpen. When he’s focused, he’s a Tsunami out there. Pitching the last 3 outs help him stay focused.

Last 30 games getting on base at a .437 pace and slugging over .630...yeah I think we could have used that production.

They needed to do something in the outfield logjam, but sent away the cheapest and one of the high upside options they had. Fowler was the big drag. Poor evaluating.

We should have ridden that pony till free agency then let some other idiot GM pay for the expensive decline.

The only thing it would change is that the Cubs would get very little for a return on him if not just straight up release him.

He went through this shit last season and nothing happened because she didnt want to cooperate beyond a social media post.

If you read her blog post, her claims of physical abuse are very vague and mentions that he mostly yelled and ignored her while cheating on her. So he may very well be a shitbag but I'm not ready to throw him in jail just yet because he didn't get along with his wife.

Ya I'm sure you would jump right on the bandwagon of burning a Cardinals player that was called out on social media by someone who has refused to cooperate with an investigation into her accusations.

What if the investigation finds that her vague description of "he laid his hands on me" turns out to be that he simply grabbed her in the middle of an argument in which she was going ape shit? She never comes out and says he literally hit her.

So excuse the hell out of me for not calling him a wife beater just yet when all we have is a social media post with vague references to physical abuse.
