Just watched the first couple episodes of Season 1, and was kind of meh. Before I give up on it, does it pick up at all?

I'm not sure how to answer that. I thought it was great from the opening scene of the first episode and has pretty much been great the whole way since.

Yes. Although (and this is purely conjecture on my part...) since it's 16 episodes it would not surprise me at all for AMC to split it into halves, and milk it for all it's worth.

I wish HBO or Showtime would pick it up. It the series is able to keep the story going. This is by far the best series ever made. I hate to see it end.

It's not about getting picked up, or AMC ending it; the showrunners have always envisioned it as a 5-year story arc.
