right. well, the food service industry doesn't necessarily collapse merely because employers are forced to pay their employees a wage they can actually survive off. the rest of the developed world seems to manage it.

He has a valid point, americans are trained/used to a pricing structure. If employers paid a living salary to all their staff. Prices double. They have to pay more in insurance and benefits also. The effect would move over into fastfood. Applebees meal would be 18minimum. Tacobell 10 bucks to cover all the costs. Then add the bonus.

Servers would no longer be required to give good service. They get paid the same.

Yeah, that will work in this country.

I think grocery prices jump also to cash in on the profit margin.

Yea but if they put waiters and waitresses on salary, the food would be so high they wouldn't have anyone to wait on and they would all go broke.

Eh, both systems would have their flaws. And most servers I've known over the years made fairly decent money. Some employers do use the system to their advantage though, I dated a waitress years ago whose employer made the wait staff stay an hour after closing cleaning the restaurant for $2/hr. Now THAT was bullshit.

they aren't working for me and if it is assumed they do, it isn't one hour.

They may breeze by your table 3 times in an hour to see if you need anything, but they aren't at my beckon call for an hour.

None the less, I tip appropriately.

As someone else pointed out, you've never been overseas.

Wait staff outside this country are much better.

Overseas they pay wait staff an appropriate wage and people do not tip. Prices are not doubled and restaurants are plenty full. Your argument to the contrary is nonsense.

Well probably because they are socialist countries and the government subsidizes, we are Capitalists here and that system would not work here.

I am of the belief that if you are cutting it so close that you can't afford to tip then you probably shouldn't be eating out to begin with and prepare your own meals.
