Okay that's a first for me. I've never seen an ump rub both ears of a pitcher checking for a foreign substance.

The umpires hand the Mets a walk to leadoff the 7th on a Musgrove strikeout. They're trying.

Not sure it's all really his fault, but for all the people who say managers don't matter, Buck Showalter basically wins wherever he goes.
But then his teams flame out completely in the playoffs. He still only has one playoff series win and 10 playoff wins total. Ned Yost won more playoff games in a single year two different times. |

I don't think it's particularly hard to be a good strategic manager in baseball but sometimes these guys really make it look difficult. |
I'm so outta touch with playoff baseball, and the wildcard expanding to more teams. It could have made that epic win by the Royals in '14 null and void.
But speaking of Musgrove,he damn sure did have some spin on his pitches tonight. It seems like almost every pitcher i watched this year had some kind of substance on the bill of their cap,and they would always touch it before throwing a pitch.Anyone else notice that ? To me it looked obvious, but the umps only look at their hand. |
