Well, f@ck!

And I am totally missing all the references to wrestling drama, because I really have no desire to watch that crap. All the clips have no effect on me whatsoever. It's like using French to insult a German. With that in mind....I will let your little sub culture carry on with your fake wrestling and manly soap operas.

If it hadn't turned into a wrestling thread, it would have turned into an "I hate actors who make political statements" thread or "Sean Penn only won because it was a gay film" thread. I think the wrestling angle inadvertantly nipped that in the bud.

A joke? Have you seen the other performances? Look, if I had an Oscars vote, I would have voted Rourke for Best Actor BUT only barely ahead of Sean Penn and Frank Langella. Penn and Langella were crazy-good in Milk and Frost/Nixon, respectively. Richard Jenkins was also pretty damn stupendous in The Visitor; in a weaker year, his performance would have been good enough to win the statue.

Each of the non-Pitt nominees for Best Actor turned in performances worthy of the Oscar. Penn winning was most certainly not a joke.

I'd say you are, because you're missing the point. We weren't attacking you with those clips and references, because (as you have said) you wouldn't understand them. What was being lost in translation was part of the humor.

For you, it must have been like people joking about you in a foreign language. There's no way that you could have participated. The idea was that you would give a futile attempt at communicating back to us, while we continue to talk over your head, the frustration and futility combining to make your reactions even funnier.

And you delivered very well.

Too general. Some film and music is art, just as some art is 'art'. But for every Citizen Kane there's two hundred and fifty (thousand) Night at the Museums. The same goes for every genre of music. It can't be an all-encompassing moniker; art is an individual accomplishment. At least to me it is.

So I would say that perhaps some hip hop could feasibly be 'art'.

(I just haven't heard it happen yet)

So I would say that perhaps some hip hop could feasibly be 'art'.

(I just haven't heard it happen yet)

(:fire:)

I have to disagree. There can be bad art. Much of it is bad. But it is still artistic expression.

Now, the terrible movies and albums and such that were made only for mass-consumption and money-making? Those fall on the same lines as a beverage label or cereal box art, etc. -- design.

The discussion between Keg and I was about his insinuations or 'joke" in his words, about Mickey Roarke doing my daughter.... then a poem abought a daughter and her dad.... Pure coincedence? Right. Now this is the point where Psykotek posts some Wrestling video...

'Art' tends to infer some degree of skill.

Plenty of bad movies, for example, are still 100x better than most people could churn out with the same resources. Art is hard. People fail at it all of the time. In fact, the key to success is probably limiting your failures ('cuz your always going to have them).

But I'm a writer (ergo an artist) and a student so I could have this theoretical discussion all day. This thread should be about T.B.A. not getting anything, not whatever one would call the kind of discussion we're having.

I'm also a writer, who makes a living as a video editor, who majored in music in college, so I'm pretty comfortable with the discussion, too.

If I painted I'd have all my bases covered. rofl

Look, I picked a fight with you, Keg, StLChief, and Psychotek. I expect you guys to give me shit.(even if I don't understand it) But there is nothing funny about shit spraying a guys innocent daughter. That is just not funny.

That's the funniest part of all. We're panning some of the worst things in wrestling history and he's taking it seriously. That's what's great about wrestling fans, even we don't take it seriously. Well, except for this guy:

Wow. We have a pretty similar background.

I was a vocal major for two years... finally switched to film and minored in music.

Im not going to read through the entire thread, but my opinion was this.

Whe the curious case of Benjamin Button beat out Iron Man and The Dark Night for Visual Effects, well, that's just BS, and thats the commity just out right denying a better movie in the given category because it wasn't a "sophisticated" film.

Basically, the Oscars are a crock of shite.

Actually (and I'm a big fan of both IM and TDK), I thought the visual effects were pretty amazing in benjamin button. What they did with brad pitt's character was a pretty clear indication of just how far forward we've come in the few years since Gollum broke new ground.

Not that I wasn't rooting for the comic book movies to win. But it was pretty damned impressive.

I am of the same opinion. The first third of the movie was absolutely carried by the visual effects behind the Benjamin Button character (well, carried by the effects AND Taraji P. Henson, anyway).

FWIW: I think that both TDK and Iron Man are better films than TCCoBB.

I thought The Dark Knight was as good as any of the 5 nominated, and better than most of them. I thought Iron Man was good, but a notch below that, although I've heard a few people say the exact opposite.

Neither of them ever had a chance, however, being comic book movies featuring superheroes.
