Yeah, it's usually a good sign when idiots like Seth Davis or Clark Kellogg don't pick you to go far. They are absolute buffoons.

We beat NDS in a closer game than it should be and lose to Boston College. From what I hear they're a very physical team and I just don't feel good about the Jayhawks this year.

I've thought the Big East was overrated in years past, but this year I was worried about running into any of them.

It is kind of cool how both Mizzou and Kansas could play a Big East team in the second round... there have always been a lot of Big 12 fans who don't like the Big East and ACC, so it could be a rude awakening if the fifth and seventh teams in the BE beat the first and third teams in the B12.

Ceej 03-15-2009 05:04 PM

I am not saying Marquette is going to beat MU, but some of these guys need to get realistic. Marquette is gonna be tough, as is WVU for us.

With that said...San Diego State is a better bb team at this point...than is Arizona. SDSU's RPI was 37....

There's a strong argument that the mountain west deserved 3 teams....over teams like:

Arizona
Michigan

It was incredible last year... every time I saw him before going to a new set of games, he would say something along the lines of "I see these teams winning, and look out for these upsets", and he was wrong every.... single.... time. I don't think anyone could be more wrong if they were trying to be wrong.

Yes...

And Arizona beat no one on the road...

tk13 03-15-2009 05:09 PM

I usually defend the mid-majors, but I'm fair. I was the one pimping the Mo. Valley a few years ago when they were really good, the KU fans laughed me out of the building for saying Bradley could beat them. But to be fair, I don't think we have anything like that this year. Nobody is that good.

But I think Vitale has a good argument that the more we bring in these power teams it rewards teams that win 18-19 games and are really mediocre. That's not any fun to watch in the first round. It's more fun to watch a Davidson go up against Syracuse or somebody.

your "big wins" is an emotional argument... facts say that san diego played better teams this year overall

Ultra Peanut 03-15-2009 05:12 PM

It's not just a mid-major thing, though. Looking at all of the 5 or 6 seeds and above, I see almost NOBODY capable of a sustained run. WVU is good for a few games, maybe, and I could definitely see a few mid-low seeds pulling upsets in the first round, but looking at a bracket, almost NOBODY outside of the top 4 seeds looks like a real threat.

doomy3 03-15-2009 05:13 PM

Well, I think Vitale is certainly making more sense than anyone else in this argument.

a valid point....they came up 2 pts short against St Mary's....and had some other close calls...but no "big wins".

I guess the argument is the RPI....and the "mediocre conference record" argument another poster made....

Do you reward a mediocre season (.500 or worse) in a major conference over a good season in a mid-major, or sub-major if you will, conference?

Tough call.

I just dont like the East Coast Sports Network's slurping of east coast teams....and Arizona (they have always had a man-crush for Lute Olson).

If at least two of those big three don't get there, I'd be very surprised. Syracuse is capable of beating anybody in the NCAA, too.

tk13 03-15-2009 05:22 PM

The only argument against Arizona is their big wins (KU, Gonzaga) came at home. You'd rarely ever get Kansas to go play at St. Mary's. Gonzaga had to go to St. Mary's since they're in the same conference... and they only won by 2 points... and Patty Mills was out.

Arizona played 2 non-conference games on the road, that's it. And they lost them both, including a 15 point loss at UNLV.

I think a lot of people have thought "out in the first weekend or as far as the EE" for a while for Kansas, and I think the same thing now that I've seen the brackets. 7/8 of WVU's conference losses came against teams ahead of them in the standings, and five of them came against Louisville, Pitt, or UConn. I haven't watched them, but a lot of those games at least look close, so that looks like a very tough game.

Get past NDS and WVU though, and I think they would have a decent shot against MSU, BC, or USC. B10 teams do okay in the tourney because of their defense and their sluggish pace, but it's to Kansas' advantage that they played @MSU earlier in the season. That's as far as I could see them going, and that's asking a lot.

Same here. Wouldn't be surprised if we didn't though. I thought the 07 team had a better shot at the NCAA tournament than this team did, and they ended up a 2 seed in the NIT. I'm guessing around a 4 or 5 seed for KSU in the NIT this year, which would not bode well for getting many home games.

I wasn't trying to prove a point, just asking a question. If the NCAA was interested in determining a national champion, the tournament would only be about 32 teams.
