FYP to more accurately reflect big-time college athletics

Whitlock Article: "Mike Leach's Arrogance Got in the Way"

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/story/1657819.html

"(Blah, blah, blah: Mangino firing similarity)....Had Leach expressed remorse in private, this controversy would’ve never emerged publicly, would’ve never caused Tech officials to suspend and then fire Leach.

Leach, a lawyer, allowed his pride and arrogance to trump common sense. He couldn’t bring himself to make peace with a spoiled player and a stage parent. Worse, Leach couldn’t bring himself to do the right thing for his employer.

Leach stood on principle.

Craig James stood on ESPN.

Mike Leach and Texas Tech lost. The Worldwide Leader flicked the lights and rolled cameras as one of its top college analysts threw a televised tantrum because a football coach humiliated his son at two separate practices.

(Blah, blah, blah no peace pipe smoked, can't blame the administration.)"

That's true, though it's definately a reflection about how much it is about the coach. Particuarly in college, where it's about recruiting the talent, not (in theory) overpaying for it.

An apology might have swept this under the rug, but the really coach had nothing to apologize for, IMO. Unless there is some detail I'm missing.

locking a college kid up in a closet is pretty bizarre if you ask me.

He didn't lock him in a closet. He asked him politely if he would mind standing in the air conditioned spa where the sun would not hurt him. He was not confined. He had every opportunity to leave. (end sarcasm). Isn't there enough blame to go around? Good grief. Sounds like just about everyone can shoulder some of the blame: player, coach, administration, Dad, ESPN.

It's too bad his career ended the way it did at Tech because he probably could have had the Miami job.

Holy shit. That would have been crazy. I would actually be interested to see what he would do with Miami level talent.

Agent: Maryland hasn't contacted Leach

11:08 AM ET 12.19 | Multiple sources have indicated that former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is the likely top target of Maryland's coaching search and one report says he could be hired early this week. Leach's agent said Saturday that Leach has not been contacted by Maryland officials -- or any of the school's prominent boosters -- about replacing Ralph Friedgen. In fact, Gary O'Hagan discounted media reports that surfaced Friday that the 50-year-old Leach could be headed to College Park anytime soon.

Titty Meat 12-20-2010 01:39 AM

What a great hire though i'm not sure how much of a powerhouse Maryland can become. I don't understand why they fired the old coach.

He was old, fat and out of touch.

All three are a "no-no" these days. Academics don't matter, nor do the number of guys you graduate.

Wins are the bottom line factor, which is why a good dude like Randy Shannon was fired.

Zaiko 12-20-2010 09:36 AM

Dane you're such a puss.
