Oh that's going to cost him some time.

alnorth 02-14-2010 01:34 PM

wow, I guess the all-world heavy-favorite, everyone-else-is-going-for-silver guy from netherlands just shot himself completely out of the medals with 3 misses.

kstater 02-14-2010 01:45 PM

Crazy with all the misses. And it's huge with the guys with 3 misses because this seeds the pursuit event.

Also I think they only take the top 60 for that event, so if you are a favorite and have a horrible day today, you wont even get a chance to compete in the pursuit.

Well, that sucks. I had no idea that new snowfall would make that much of a difference. Apparently if you were not scheduled to be one of the first 15 competitors in the course, then you literally had no chance at all to get a medal even if you shoot cleanly and are a fast skier.

Some of the best biathlon competitors in the world who shot cleanly and ski'd fast are still a minute behind some random french scrub who started earlier. The NBC expert said the competition was over as soon as the snow started to fall, and it looks like he's right.

You would think they could come up with a way to remedy that. Kind of crappy that winner gets decided by the pecking order with the weather.

When you start 80 something people at 30 second intervals, there's not a whole lot you can do. Tis part of life.

Yeah, I know. Doesn't make it any better though. I guess if you are a lower tier competitor you are praying for a day like today.

Its probably kind of rare. The whole thing lasts only about an hour, if the weather goes to hell in the first 5 minutes or in the last 10 or so minutes, it doesnt mean much. If its light snow, its no big deal. If its rain, it actually helps the late competitors, but it was heavy snow, and it happened at exactly the wrong time to completely screw over most of the field.

This also sets up the seeding for the pursuit. All those strong heavily-favored guys are gonna start out 2 or 3 minutes behind that french dude. At least the USA got really lucky with one guy who went early and shot clean, we'll have one guy in 2 days who only starts a minute behind. The pursuit also has 4 shooting stages, with a potential for 20 penalties, so if those first 4 guys dont shoot clean, the guys 1-2 minutes back can still catch up.

cool. We had 3 inches of snow today and I need to shovel it sometime.

I'm fine with watching a little bit of figure skating when its a medal round, but they are just doing qualifications today.

alnorth 02-14-2010 02:36 PM

speaking of figure skating, this is gonna be kind of a weird year, and it'll be interesting to see the US TV audience for it. We usually have a strong women's team and next to nothing for men. Apparently this year is bizarro-world olympics for the USA, our women's figure skating completely sucks and has almost no potential for a medal. For men's figure skating, I guess we have one of the strongest teams in US history with 2 or 3 having a strong chance to medal.

Some guys will put up with watching a few cute girls in skirts jumping around, but how many are going to watch a few (probably gay) men in tights? Will the women tune in for that?

I guess we also have a couple dominant teams for ice dancing, so it'll also be interesting to see how many tune in to watch a few couples grope and make out on the ice for medals.

Just looked at the scores for hockey. Apparently Canada's women set an olympic record, destroying Slovakia 18-0.

Who the hell was the goalkeeper? I've never skated in my life, and I think I might have allowed fewer goals than 18.

mlyonsd 02-14-2010 02:48 PM

WTH are we now rubbing a gold medal into the noses of the Canadians when instead we could be watching real live action?

NBC sucks.

ABC, CBS, or Fox need to outbid NBC. This piece of crap network cant do anything right.

I can understand delays and some games with programming when its on the other side of the world, but there is no damned excuse for not showing more live events from Canada.

Yeah, women's hockey seems to be rather lopsided. Can't wait for the men's games. Should be very good.

Last winter olympics they showed figure skating practices. Really. No, really.

There's not much a goalie can do without a competent defense. I played the position for a long time.

That, and they seem to be significantly smaller than the Americans.

Couple of highlight reel goals from Team USA though.

I think the leader was a non-factor with or without the crash. He admitted he was good at jumping, but not so much in Cross-Country, so he might as well not even be in the race. He lost almost half his lead on the first of four laps before the crash.

alnorth 02-14-2010 04:00 PM

This is really cool. Race is halfway done, the original leader is gone, USA is 1-2, and our best cross-country skiier who had a bad jump and had to start in the 20's, has already erased almost two minutes to catch up to the leaders at #8.

kstater 02-14-2010 04:09 PM

KC_Connection 02-14-2010 04:12 PM

alnorth 02-14-2010 04:13 PM

Man, if Demong would have had a halfway-decent jump, he would have blown away the field. Started about 2 minutes back and finished 6th or 7th

And this is why I don't get the people like SNR. It's once every 4 years for 2 weeks. I was honestly sitting there yelling at my TV screen for some XC skiers. It's ****ing awesome.

mens downhill freestyle is on

alnorth 02-14-2010 07:57 PM

NBC is unbelievably horrible. They showed tape-delayed qualifying rounds for the men's moguls, while the finals are going on. They arent going to show it live to anyone, on any channel. The finals are taking place now, and what do we get? Pairs figure skating, no other options to see it live. Awesome.

alnorth 02-14-2010 08:04 PM

Men's Moguls update: unbelievably horrible night for USA so far. We had 4 competitors qualify, two of them (the only two of the night) were disqualified for going off course, a 3rd is sitting at 9th place with a bad score.

Our last shot at a medal will go 3rd-to-last

If you need a reason to keep watching this delayed stuff tonight, apparently I'm reading that the last guy to go was a Frenchie who put together a good run, didnt get the scores he thought he deserved, and is pissed about it.

Dale Begg-Smith was involved with (and made a ton of money off of) a company called "ValueAd". Here's an investigative report from an Australian paper: http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2006/...191842651.html

The Canadian olympic committee basically told him to stop or he probably wouldnt be allowed to compete any longer. So he went to Australia, which allowed him to continue his business and compete for the Australian team.

We could always pay the IOC to cover it up like the Americans did in track for all those years (particularly with Carl Lewis).

I guess the moral of this story is that we should all just watch figure skating for the entertainment value and not care about who wins. The new scoring system is so incredibly complicated that no one understands it enough to call out the judges.

I'm thinking the strategy here is everyone should just do the most rediculously difficult routine possible. If you fall, big deal, they count difficulty so high its worth the mistakes.

GloryDayz 02-14-2010 09:48 PM
